MS. LYNDA HUNTER

 

Lynda Hunter, age 53, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday evening, January 2, 2005 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Ms. Hunter was a lifelong resident of this area, and was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church. She had been employed as Parts and Service Director for Jacky Jones Chrysler in Hayesville, North Carolina.

Surviving family members include her mother, Martha Deaver, of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Mandy Hunter, of Blairsville; granddaughter, Ava Hunter; sister and brother-in-law, Patsy and Jacky Jones, of Hayesville; niece and her husband, Jaclyn & Justin Ashe, and their child, Kolbe Ashe, of Hayesville; nephew and wife, Bobby and Kim Jones and their child, Grace Jones; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 4, 2005, at 2:00 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Eddie Herring and Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating. Special music was presented by Mrs. Elizabeth Plott and Mr. Scott Lance.  Burial was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: LeRoy Ledford, Arlan Ledford, Chad Sams, Jamie Morgan, Ken Barton, and Sonny Woodard.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Ed Ashe, Andy Long, Stuart Sistrunk, Scott Barton, Darren Mashburn, Mark Anderson, Tom Bailey, John Mirandi, Bob Lambert, Jeff Patterson, and Steve Garrett.

mrs. marilyn cheek

 

The Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville announces services for Mrs. Marilyn Cheek, age 55, of Blairsville who passed away Sunday January 9, 2005 in the Union General Hospital.

Mrs. Cheek was born on Wednesday, February 16, 1949 in Cobb County, GA to the late James and Vera Wallace Holland.  She had lived in Douglasville, GA before moving to Blairsville in 1998 and was preceded in death by her brother James Sidney Holland.  She was an employee of Aramark Industries in Young Harris, GA. Baptist Church, New Liberty Baptist Church and Youngstown Baptist Church in Union County.

Surviving are her husband, Herman Cheek of the home; daughter, Lora Ann Dan of Virginia Beach, VA, son and daughter-in-law, Robert James Fortenberry and Edna of Blairsville, daughter, Angela Christine Dye of Acworth, GA, daughter Davi Jeannette Duncan of Power Springs, GA, step-son, James Charles Cheek of Hiram, GA, step-son Gary Ernest Cheek of Hiram, GA, Herman Kevin Cheek of Dallas, GA and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Stacy Dyer on officiating.  Music was provided by J.D. and Ruby Seabolt and Benny Burnette.  Pallbearers were L.J. Brown, Lum Brown, Horace Cheek, James Cheek, Gary Cheek and Kevin Cheek.

Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Powder Springs, GA with Rev. Richard Wilkins officiating.

mrs. lois nell porter

 

Mrs. Lois Nell Porter, age 61, of Timber Ridge Road, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2005 in the Saint Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.  Mrs. Porter was born on August 21, 1943 in Fannin County, the daughter of the late Paul Monroe Taylor and the late Willa Mae Meers Taylor.  She was preceded in death by a sister, Maebelle Lee.  Mrs. Porter was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church and also was a member of the Ladies Prayer Group at the church.

Surviving Mrs. Porter are her loving husband of forty-four years, Amos Porter of Blairsville, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Paul and Jan Porter of Marietta, Perry Porter of Kennesaw, two daughters and sons-in-law, Dana and Bobby Nelson of Blairsville, Tina and Robert Burnette of TN, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Monroe Taylor of Blairsville, David and Kathy Taylor of Blairsville, four grandchildren, Seth William Nelson, Sarabeth Nelson, Lauren Cheyenne Burnette and Ashlyn Grace Burnette, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 6, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Philadelphia Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Davenport and Rev. Jack Pilger officiating.  Special music was presented by Mrs. Porter’s son, Paul Porter.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Travis Taylor, Edgar Lee, Chris Nelson, Ryan Lee, Jack Nelson and Eugene Nelson.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Matthew Taylor, Tony Wendall and Jason Lee.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

mr. wayne r. teague, jr.

 

Mr. Wayne R. Teague, Jr., age 40, of Cherry Log, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2004, in Snellville, Georgia.

Mr. Teague was born in Polk County, Tennessee, on Wednesday, September 9, 1964.  He lived most of his life in this area, and had attended Union County High School in Blairsville.

Surviving are his mother, Jane Teague, of Cherrylog; brother, Robert Collins, of Cherrylog, and brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Judy Collins, of Ellijay; sister and brother-in-law, Myra Collins Burns and Tim Burns, of Gainesville, Georgia; three nieces: Briana Burns, of Gainesville; Heather Collins, of Ellijay; and Stacie Hernandez, of Ellijay.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services are held on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at 10 a.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Brent Chatham officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorial contributions be made to The Salvation Army, 348 E. Franklin Street, Toccoa, Georgia 30577.

mrs. norma jean watson

 

Mrs. Norma Jean Watson, age 68, of Souther Ridge, Blairsville, passed away on Friday, January 7, 2005 in Brasstown Manor following an extended illness.  Mrs. Watson was born on November 7, 1936 in Toledo, OH, the daughter of the late Charles Frazee and the late Dorothy Snyder Frazee.  She had retired as a registered nurse with over forty years of service.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Freeman Curtis Watson in 2003.  Mrs. Watson was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Watson are three sons and two daughter-in-laws, Charles and Ellen Beerman of South Haven, MS, Raymond and Lisa Beerman of Atlanta, David Beerman of Pembroke Pines, FL, three grandchildren, Ava Beerman, Taylor Grace Beerman and Jack Beerman, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 14, 2005 at 4 p.m. from the First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music will be presented by Jeff Bauman.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Lewy Body Dementia Assoc. (web site www.lewybodyassociation.org) in Mrs. Watson’s memory.

mrs. fern carol kratt

 

Mrs. Fern Carol Kratt, age 86, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2005, in Union county Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Kratt was born in Allegheny County, PA, on Saturday, August 31, 1918, a daughter of the late Jacob Hadje Goehring and Fern Baker Goehring.  She had been living in Blairsville for the past several years, and was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving family members include a sister, Melissa Devereaux, of Blairsville; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services were held on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at 1 p.m., in Allegheny Cemetery in Pittsburg, PA.

Mrs. Effie S. Patton Colwell, age 98, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, January 1, 2005 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Colwell was born in Union County, Georgia, on Monday, March 26, 1906, a daughter of the late John Seabolt and Ara Jones Seabolt.  She was a homemaker.  She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving are her daughters, Blanche Candler, and Patsy Davenport, both of Blairsville; grandchildren and their spouses—Tommie Candler Burrell and Mark Burrell; and Craig and Marsha Davenport; great grandhcildren00Olivia Burrell, Ben Davenport, and Gretchen Burrell.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 3, 2005, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Eddie Herring and Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Craig Davenport, Mark Burrell, Jim Allison, Troy Phillips, Carlton Colwell, and Billy Decker.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Dr. David Breedlove, Ray Rogers, Bud Nichols, Joe Satterfield, and Tom Gilliland.  Burial was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.
