Rev.
Malcolm Chapman, age 75, of Hiawassee, Georgia, formerly of Suches,
Georgia,
passed away Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Chatuge Regional Nursing Home
in Hiawassee.
Malcolm
was born on Thursday, September 20, 1934 in
Ludowici, Georgia, to the late Clyde and Catherine (Dubose) Chapman. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist
Church. Malcolm had a great interest in
Boy Scouts and had served as Scout Leader.
He had been a volunteer fireman with Suches Fire Dept Station #5. Malcolm was a beloved Pastor and Church
Leader for many years and had served in South Georgia, Virginia,
Clayton,
Georgia (Clayton Baptist Church) and came to Suches in 1983, where he
pastured
Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church for 12 years until his retirement. He cherished his mission trips to England and
Ireland.
Surviving
family members include his wife, Ann Chapman of Hiawassee; step-son and
his
wife, Jim and Cynthia Wood of Hiawassee; step-daughter, Beth Wood of
Hiawassee;
brother, Clyde Lamar Chapman Jr. of Hinesville, Georgia;
granddaughters,
Jamison Wood and Jacey Wood; and several nieces and nephews. Many friends also survive.
Preceding Malcolm in death, besides his
parents, was a sister, Mary Emily Oakley-O’Brien; and his
mother-in-law, Susie
Hunt.
At the
family’s request, due to inclement weather, funeral services were held
Monday,
January 11, 2010 at 1 PM from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev.
Harold
Ledford officiating. The following
gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jim Wood, Jim Miner, Bob Gibby, Eddie
Bradley,
Benny Brookshire, and George Van Voorhis.
Burial followed in New Hope Baptist Church Cemetery in
Morganton,
Georgia.
If you
wish the family has requested memorial contributions
in Malcolm’s memory be made to the Suches Fire Dept. Station #5 or to
Woody Gap
School Library.
The family
received friends at the Cochran Funeral Home on Sunday, January 10,
2010 from 2
PM until 6 PM.

Mr. Bill
Edmon Potts, age 63, of Nicks Way, Blairsville, passed away on
Saturday, Jan.
9, 2010 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Potts was born on March 10, 1946 in
Fannin County, the son of the late Millard Collins and the late Leoa
Milsap
Potts. He was a lifelong resident of
Union county. He was a veteran of the US
Army, and of the Vietnam War. Bill had
owned and operated Bill Potts Insurance Agency for several years and
had been
in the insurance business for over forty years.
Bill was a loving husband, father, brother and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing and
spending time with his family and friends, especially his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Kevin Hilton
and a brother, W.B. Potts. Bill was a
member of the First Baptist Church of Blue Ridge.
Surviving Mr.
Potts are his loving wife of fifteen years, Shirley Loudermilk Potts of
Blairsville, two sons and daughters-in-law, Keith and Casey Potts of
Blairsville, Kevin and Teri Potts of Canton, GA, one daughter, Alison
Hilton of
Sautee, GA, two sisters, Lois Lightfoot of Blairsville, Mary Nell
Housley of
Jasper, two brothers, Blake Collins of Morangton (sic), Blane Collins
of Morganton
(sic), six grandchildren, Garrett, Griffin, Grant, Connor, Chloe and
Alex, many
other relatives and friends also survive.
A memorial
service was held on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010 at 6:00 p.m. from the
Mountain View
Chapel with the Rev. Larry Truelove officiating. Military
honors were presented by the North
GA Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers if
you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the
American Cancer
Society in memory of Mr. Potts. The
family met with friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 4-6
p.m.

Mrs.
Dorothy B. Geardink, age 91, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Saturday,
January 9, 2010, in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.
Mrs.
Geardink was born in Duel, South Dakota, on Wednesday,
December 18, 1918, a daughter of the late Richard Bublitz and Nellie
Sedgewick
Bublitz. She was a farmer and had lived
in the Blairsville area for the past two years.
Her husband, John Geardink, had preceded her in death.
Surviving
family members include son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Gloria
Geardink, of
El Paso, Texas; and daughter and son-in-law, L.K. and Craig Metz, of
Blairsville; a sister and brother-in-law, Nellie and Paul Wahlstrom, of
Canby,
Minnesota; grandchildren: Barry Handegard, of Blairsville, Brad
Handegard, of
Knoxville, Tennessee, Jaime Dix, of Indiana, and Ryan Geardink, of
South
Dakota; six great-grandchildren also survive.
Memorial
services will be scheduled at a later date in Brookings, South Dakota.

Mrs.
Jennie Mae (Better known as Jan) Nelson, age 86, of School St. circle,
Blairsville, passed away on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010 at her home following
an
extended illness. Mrs. Nelson was born on
March 9, 1923 in Union County, the daughter of the late Jeremiah Rich
and the
late Julia Colwell Rich. She was a
native and lifelong resident of Union County.
Jan enjoyed cooking and loved being with her family. She was employed with the Union County School
System for several years. She was
preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Nelson, two sons, Wesley and
Willard
Clinton Helton, three brothers, Junior, David and J.M. Rich, three
sisters,
Mary King, Marie Guffey and Bert Arnold.
Mrs. Nelson was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mrs. Nelson are one daughter, Martha Hamby of
Blairsville, one
grand-daughter, Mandy and husband Steve davenport of Blairsville,
niece, Jackie
Arnold of Blairsville, nephew, Mike Arnold of Blairsville, three
grandchildren,
Paedon and Kaenon Young and Jensen Davenport, many other relatives and
friends
also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 from the Mountain View
Chapel with
the Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.
Special music was presented by Amber, Amy and Vickie McClure. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers,
Rex Owenby, Steve Davenport, Ryan Owenby, Mike Arnold, Josh Cook and
Benny
Erwin. Serving as honorary pallbearers
were Paedon and Kaenon Young. Interment
followed in the Union memory Gardens Cemetery.
The family met with friends at the funeral home on Thursday
evening from
5-9 p.m.
