virginia sullivan reynolds

 

Mrs. Virginia Sullivan Reynolds, age 72, of Richard Russell Hwy, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, Jan. 6, 2003 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Reynolds was born on Aug. 3, 1930 in Union County, the daughter of the late Francis Grayson Sullivan and the late Alice Mae Souther Sullivan.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She was preceded in death by a son, Eddie Hughes, Brother, Uary J. Sullivan and a sister, Eunice Sullivan Swinson.  She had worked with the U.S. Forest Service at Vogel and Brasstown Bald for several years.  Mrs. Reynolds was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Reynolds are one daughter, Patricia Hughes of Alpharetta;; three sons, Roger Dale Hughes of Blairsville, Richard Joseph Hughes of Murphy, NC and John Howard Reynolds of Arabi, GA; two sisters, Marjorie Sullivan McCurley of Blairsville and Harold Sullivan of Lilburn; nine grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Tanner officiating.  Special music was presented by Christi Yarbrough.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Brian Kelley, Melvin Swinson, Ron Swinson, Brad Swinson, Neal Kelley and Billy Clayton.  Interment followed in the Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.

jessie pell berry fields

 

Mrs. Jessie Pell Berry Fields, age 92, of Monica Dr., Morrow, GA, formerly of Blairsville passed away on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 in the Southern Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.  Mrs. Fields was born on Nov. 7, 1910 in Union County, the daughter of the late William Jefferson Fields and the late Ila Jane Frady Fields.  She was the last surviving of thirteen children.  She was preceded in death by a son, Edmund Jefferson Fields in 1999, and by her husband of seventy three years, Olin Horace Fields in 2001.  Mrs. Fields was a member of the First Baptist Church of Morrow.

Surviving Mrs. Fields are two grandsons, Jeffrey Fields of Morrow, Richard Fields of Morrow; three great grandchildren, Jessica Marie Fields of Morrow, Bryan Fields of Blairsville; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Stephen Cook officiating.  Special music was presented by Hubert and Betty Legg.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Aubrey Miller, Billy Fields, W.R. Berry, Bryan Fields, Carter Spence, and Belton Tucker.  Interment followed in the Shady Grove Methodist Cemetery.

mr. hoyt tanner

 

Mr. Hoyt Tanner, age 88, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2003 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Tanner was born in Oglethorpe County, Georgia, on Wednesday, September 23, 1914, a son of the late Gordon Tanner and Cordie Smith Tanner.  Mr. Tanner was a long time resident of Union County and was a member of Bunker Hill Baptist Church.  Mr. Tanner had been a welder in the aircraft manufacturing industry.  He had been preceded in death by his wife, Della Duckworth Tanner, who passed away in 1990.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Edith Tanner; daughter and son-in-law, Joan and Johnny Carroll; son and daughter-in-law, David and Shirley Tanner; son and daughter-in-law, Denny and Debbie Tanner, all of Blairsville; brother, Jack Tanner of Snellville, Georgia; sister, Reba Newsome of Alabama; Ten grandchildren: Ricky Tanner, Jeff Tanner, Sherry Lovell, Shannon Carroll, Triska Stroud, Dana Tanner, Micah Tanner, Jason Tanner, Steven Tanner and Jodi Tanner; fifteen great grandchildren also survive, along with many friends and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 13, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Jonathon Hood, Rev. Tommy Jones and Rev. Hubert Legg officiating.  Special music was presented by Mrs. Ashley Hold and The Legg Family.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Shannon Carroll, Jeff Tanner, Ricky Tanner, Steven Tanner, Jason Tanner, and Mike Stroud.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Michael Lovell, Carl Wayne White, Sylvan Butt, and Buster Abercrombie.  Interment was in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

john henry freeman

 

Mr. John Henry Freeman, age 88, of the Blue Ridge Hwy, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 in Canton, GA following an extended illness.  Mr. Freeman was born on June 26, 1914 in Union County, the son of the late George Washington Freeman and the late Aria Scroggs Freeman.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  Mr. Freeman was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Freeman are his loving wife of sixty nine years, Gladys Payne Freeman of Canton; one daughter and son in law, Brenda and James Reece of Marietta; four sons and three daughter in laws, Jimmy and Susan Freeman of Acworth, Sonny and Joyce Freeman of Blairsville, Larry and Marshal Freeman of Smyrna, Gary Freeman of Mayesville; fourteen grandchildren, twenty two great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2003 at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Harrison Bradley officiating.  Special music was presented by Sheila Weber, Stacy Holcomb, Jody Payne and Lita Gowder.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, J.W. Payne, Buddy Legg, Jimmy Freeman, Kevin Reece, Homer Powell and Russell Freeman.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

miss lillie brown

 

Miss Lillie Brown, age 92, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, January 7, 2003 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home in Hiawassee.

Miss Brown was born in Carroll County, Georgia, on Thursday, may 12, 1910.  She was of the Church of God faith.

Although she had no living relatives, Miss Brown found a loving friend in Sarah M. Stewart, the founder of The Stewart Community Home, located in Columbus, Georgia.  The Stewart Community Home is a safe haven for the special needs population of the Chattahoochee Valley.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 11, 2003, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.

minnie raper elliott

 

Mrs. Minnie Raper Elliott, age 95, of Hiawassee, Georgia, passed away Monday, January6, 2003, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Elliott was born in Union County, Georgia, on Friday, July 5, 1907, a daughter of the late Jesse Raper and Georgia Chastain Raper.  She was a homemaker and attended Ivy Log Baptist Church.  Mrs. Elliott was a native of Blairsville, and had spend 40 years in Tullahoma, Tennessee before moving to Hiawassee in 1995.

Surviving are her loving husband, James Buell Elliott, of Hiawassee; daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Norm Bennett, of Hiawassee; brother-in-law and his wife, Dale and Billie Elliott, of Blairsville; many nieces and nephews, friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at 11 am, from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Dr. John Kay officiating.  Special music was presented by Mrs. Jackie Hill.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jim Elliott, Steve Gerdes, Elliott Hill, Jimmy Burns, Lester Deaver, and Bruce Johnson.  Interment was in Ivy Log Cemetery.
