jimmy wayne cook

 

Mr. Jimmy Wayne Cook, age 74, of Trackrock Church Rd. Blairsville, passed away on Thursday January 11, 2007 in the North East Georgia Medical Center following an extended illness.  Mr. Cook was born on September 26, 1932 in Fulton County, GA; the son of the late Lawrence Wayne Cook and the late Evelyn Dodson Cook.  He was a member of the Blairsville Lions Club, the Masonic Lodge F&AM and a member of the Local #85 Union.  He was a retired Welder with over thirty-five years of service with Mallory and Evans Company.  Mr. Cook attended Coosa Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Cook are his loving wife of twenty-six years, Vivian Cook of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Sandy Cook of Jackson, GA; three daughters and sons-in-law, Laurie and Scott Young of Columbus, GA; Sandi and Frank Dyer of Birmingham, AL; Robin and Ricky Poston of Jackson, GA; three step-children, John and Pam Jordon of Blairsville, Geneva and Gerry Bailey of Blairsville, Krickett and Ellison of TX; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Delores and Bobby Cooley of Snellville, Maryellen and Guy Anglin of Conyers, GA; sixteen grandchildren, Amanda and Audrey Cook, Jared Dyer, Corey and Chad Cunningham, Justin Mullinax, Sheldon Preston, Keith Dyer, Will and Samantha Young, Joe Jordon, mark and Jeff Kelley, Renee Patterson, Lynn Thorton and Kay Jordon Coots, several great-grandchildren, many other relatives, friends and neighbors also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, January 15, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Coosa United Methodist Church with the Rev. Katie Strals officiating.  Special music was presented by the Old Liberty Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Joe Jordon, Keith, Jared and Frank Dyer, Justin Mullinax, Corey and Chad Cunningham, Ricky Poston, Scott and Will Young.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening from 6-9pm.

frank hein, jr.

 

Mr. Frank Hein, Jr., age 76, of Blairsville, GA, passed away unexpectedly Saturday, January 6, 2007.  Mr. Hein was a native of Wisconsin; he then moved to Florida in the late 1930’s.  He was a humorous storyteller, boat-builder craftsman, soldier, deacon, and most of all, a loving father.  Frank attended the University of Miami where he played football and volunteered for the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Mr. Hein had won many awards in his lifetime.  Some of his accomplishments were as follows:  West Palm Beach, Florida police officer; later, a Deputy Sheriff in Vero Beach, Florida; a real-estate salesman; a criminal scene investigator; and serving in the National Safety Council Defensive Driving Campaign.  He was a member of the Army-navy Union, and the Eagles of Vero Beach; and the Explorers Boys and Girls Club.  He then retired in 1993 and moved to Blairsville, GA.

Survivors include: wife, Sandra of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Teri Hein of Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, brad and Nickie McBride; daughter and son-in-law, Dawn and jack Crandal; daughter and son-in-law, Linn and Carl Fore; daughter and son-in-law, Mona and Joe Smith of Indiana; daughter and son-in-law, Jody and Bruce Garwood of Florida; sister, Gina Campen of Florida; one nephew, Jeff Campen; 17 grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.  Preceding Mr. Hein in death was a son, Randy Hein.

Funeral services were held Thursday, January 11, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev, Ivan Rexroth officiating.  Music was presented y Marynell Yahl and Mark Caouette.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Adam Trembley, Joe Smith, Bruce Garwood, Carl Fore, Matha Brownlee, and Jeff Campen.  Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military honors presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 5-8, Wednesday, January 10.

theodore “ted” diaz

 

Theodore “Ted” Diaz, age 54, died suddenly at home on January 12, 2007.  Ted was an avid gardener, and created an oasis of flowers at his home.  He also loved to cook, and served many gourmet meals to friends, as well as professionally, as a caterer.  He won several awards for his cooking.  Ted was well known for his gifts of cheesecakes and beautiful bouquets of flowers.  He was also admired by all who knew him for his incredible courage in face of tremendous adversity.  A paraplegic, Ted was passionate about helping children with disabilities.  When he lived in California, he worked as a coach with these children, and took them to the special Olympics.  He was responsible for bringing handicapped games to union County in 1995.

Ted grew up in New York, lived for a number of years in Berkeley and Oakland, CA, and moved to Blairsville almost 25 years ago.  He is preceded in death by his mother, Celia Diaz.  He leaves behind loved ones Reggie Lenoir and Sheila Wofsy of Suches, and Linda Bryant and Wendy Belkin of Decatur; sister ceil Diaz of New Jersey; and beloved companion Shorty.

Well known for his generosity, it was Ted’s desire that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to S.A.F.E., the local shelter for abused women and their children, in Blairsville, GA; Heifer International, PO Box 1692, Merrifield, VA 22116-1692, or the Humane Society’s Mountain Shelter, PO Box 1252, Blairsville, GA 30514.  A memorial gathering will be announced.

michael wayne nelson

 

Mr. Michael Wayne Nelson, age 61, of Blairsville formerly of Atlanta, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Nelson was born on May 3, 1945 in Williston, NC; the son of Verna Grimstvedt Nelson and the late Merle Wayne Nelson.  He had made his home in Blairsville for the past ten years moving here from the Atlanta area.  Mr. Nelson was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving Mr. Nelson are his mother, Verna Nelson of Blairsville; several cousins, many other relatives, friends and neighbors also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later time and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to your favorite charity in Mr. Nelson’s memory.
