Mr.
Horace Cheek, age 67, of Arkaqua Rd., Blairsville passed away on
Tuesday,
January 10, 2012 in the Landmark Hospital in Athens following an
extended
illness. Mr. Cheek was born on Sept. 23,
1944 in Hayesville, NC, the son of the late Charlie Cheek and the late
Lena S.
Ferguson Cheek. Horace was a lifelong
resident of Union County. He was a loving brother, uncle and was a
friend to
many. He was preceded in death by his
wife, Thelma Ruth Jones Cheek who passed away on Dec. 24, 2011. Mr. Cheek was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving
Mr. Cheek are one sister and brother-in-law, Shirley and Edward
Mashburn of
Blairsville, three brothers and sisters-in-law, William and Nedra Cheek
of
Blairsville, Herman and Lavada Cheek of Blairsville, Jerry and Susie
Cheek of
Blairsville, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends
also
survive.
Funeral
services were held on Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012 at 2 p.m. from the
Mountain View
Chapel with the Rev. Danny White officiating.
Special music was presented by the Son’s of Light Singers. The following gentleman served as
pallbearers, James and Gary Cheek, Brian Mashburn, Dale Tanner, Derrick
Tanner
and Eddie Beavers. The following gentleman served as honorary
pallbearers,
Kevin Cheek, Tommy McAuliffe and Kenneth West.
Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery where he
will
rest next to his wife, Ruth. In lieu of
flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to
the
American Cancer Society or to the American Lung Association in memory
of Mr.
Cheek. The family met with friends at
the funeral home on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m.

thomas “tommy” lee burnett, sr.

Mr.
Thomas "Tommy" Lee Burnett Sr., age 80, of
Huckleberry Hills Rd., Blairsville passed away on Sunday, Jan. 15, 2012
at his
home following an extended illness. Mr.
Burnett was born on Nov. 3, 1931 in Union County, the son of the late
Edley
Burnette and the late Alvia Alwayne MaHaffey Burnette.
He was a veteran of the US Army. Tommy had
retired from General Motors after over thirty years of service. After retiring from General Motors he was a
poultry farmer for over fifteen years.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Alwaine Totherow,
Norma Jean
George and Brenda Lee Sosebee two brothers, Eugene Burnette and Gearl
Lee
Burnett. Mr. Burnett was a member of
Philadelphia Baptist Church.
Surviving
Mr. Burnett are his loving wife, Peggy Ann Lovell Burnett of
Blairsville, one
son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Dannella Burnett of Gainesville, GA.,
one daughter
Debbie Burnett of Hoschton, GA, one stepson and daughter-in-law, Jamie
and
Shannon Garrett of Milwaukee, WI, four brothers and sisters-in-law,
Franklin
and Carneal Burnette of Buford, GA, Richard and Barbara Burnette,
Junior and
Brenda Burnette and David and Mary Burnette all of Blairsville, two
sisters and
brother-in-law, Bonnie and Wayne Dills of Lawrenceville, GA, Wanda
Brophy of
Jefferson, GA, three brothers-in-law, Lawrence Totherow of Blairsville,
Edward
George of Stone Mtn., and Randy Sosebee of Morganton, one
sister-in-law, Wanda
Burnette of Blairsville, four grandchildren, J.B. Burnett, Emma
Burnett, Luke
Garrett and Olivia Garrett, many other relatives and friends also
survive.
Funeral
services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2012 at 1 p.m. from the
Mountain
View Chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Chad Underwood
officiating. Tommy’s nephews will serve
as pallbearers. Interment will follow in
the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday
evening
from 6-8 p.m. In Lieu of flowers the
family suggest memorials be made to the Union County Dialysis Center.

Mrs.
Alberta Barris, age 93, of Murphy
Hwy, Blairsville, passed away, Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Stonehenge. She was born December 4, 1918 daughter of the
late Albert and Nora Brandt Konert. She
had lived here for the past 5 years coming here from Lawrenceville, Ga.
(sic) Mrs. Barris was preceded in death
by her husband, Milton Barris in 1996.
She was of the Protestant Faith.
Survivors
include her daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Douglas Myers of
Blairsville,
three grandchildren, Jeffrey, Melissa and Kelly, seven great
grandchildren.
Memorial
services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers make memorials to St. Jude’s Children
Hospital.

Mr.
Haskel “Bill” H. Drake age 81, of
Murphy Hwy., Blairsville, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2012 at his
home
following an extended illness. Mr. Drake
was born on Oct. 18, 1930 in Union County, the son of the late Haskel
H. Drake
and the late Willie Colwell Drake. He
was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.
Bill was a veteran of the US Army of the
Korean War. He was a brick mason for
many years than was employed with the Georgia Department of
Transportation
where he retired after many years of service.
His hobbies were his grandchildren, hunting and fishing, he
loved
camping, traveling, gardening and water skiing.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Haskel Drake in 1964,
a
brother, Jack Drake in 2011 and a sister, Lois Lance in 1998. He was a member of the Allegheny Masonic
Lodge # 114 F&AM. Mr. Drake was a
member, Deacon and served as a Trustee of Antioch Baptist Church for
over fifty
years where he was a former Sunday School teacher, former Sunday School
Superintendant,
and was involved with the AWANA Program.
Surviving
Mr. Drake are his loving wife of fifty-six years, Melva Lynn McAfee
Drake of
Blairsville, one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Carla Drake of
Blairsville,
one daughter and son-in-law, Sabrina and Ricky Rich of Blairsville,
aunt, Mary
Grace Hemphill of Blairsville, four grandchildren, Madison Rich,
Ralston Drake,
Matthew Rich and Sawyer Drake, four step grandchildren, Chad, Kaye,
Trint and
Christa Rich, five step great grandchildren, Lance, Cayden, Katie,
Bentley and
Blakley Rich, several nieces, nephews, cousins, many other relatives
and
friends also survive.
Funeral
services will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. from the
Antioch
Baptist Church Family Life Center with the Rev. George Cline, Rev.
Billy Rabern
officiating. Eulogy by Dr. David
Gowder. The following gentleman will
serve as pallbearers, Britt, Brannon and Brad McAfee, Chad and Trint
Rich, Scott
Lance, Joey, Tim and Alan Colwell.
Interment will follow in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery
with the
North GA Honor Guard conducting Military Honors. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family
requests that memorials may be made to the Antioch Baptist Church
Renovation of
Sanctuary Fund in memory of Bill. The
family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening
from 6-9
p.m.

Thomas
“Tom” Dewitt Passmore, age 85, of Blairsville, GA, passed
away on January 11, 2012 after battling a long illness.
Tom was born in Mayo, FL on December 31, 1926
to Thomas Dewitt and Claudia Cooper Passmore.
Shortly after birth, Tom's family returned to Hayesville, NC
where Tom
grew up until he joined the United States Navy at the age of 16. Tom served during World War II as a gunnery
instructor. Tom left the Navy due to
injuries to his ears and split the majority of his time between
Jacksonville,
FL and Clay County, NC where he had numerous friends and family. After leaving the Navy, Tom began work as a
business machine repairman and worked for Remington, Royal, Underwood
and
Buroughs Business Machine companies, to name a few.
Tom eventually opened his own business
machine companies in Jacksonvillle, FL (Florida Business Machine
Company) and
Waynesville, NC (Haywood Typewriter Company).
In 1969, Tom moved his family to Blairsville, GA, where he would
spend
the remainder of his life. He opened
Mobile Home Step & Supply Company and distributed his products
throughout
the Southeastern United States. During
his career, Tom belonged to various clubs and organizations such as the
Toast
Masters, Moose Club, and Kiwanis Club and served as president of the
Dad's Club
at Inglewood Elementary School in Jacksonville, FL.
As
hobbies and past-time,
Tom loved to play poker with his friends and family. He also had a
passion for
reading and writing poetry. Tom has
written several poems that have been published in various area
newspapers and
at times would contribute his thoughts and opinions to "Letters of the
Editor" of the local paper. Tom was
also very active in the political process.
He would enjoy meeting his friends and discussing politics over
a meal
or a cup of coffee. He would always cast
his vote and even while battling his illness during his final hours,
Tom made
it known who he was for in the upcoming election.
Tom
was preceded in death
by his parents Thomas Dewitt and Claudia Cooper Passmore, his sister
Emma Dane
Carter, his sister Lucille Passmore, and his brother-in-law John F.
Carter of
Hayesville, NC. Tom is also preceded in
death by his son Thomas “Tommy” Eugene Passmore, his son James Allen
Passmore,
and his grandson Israel Hughes of Blairsville, GA., and his longtime
friend
Wally Langford.
Tom
is survived by his wife
Mary Elizabeth Passmore, his daughter Loella Passmore, and his daughter
Carol
Renae Rockwood of Blairsville, GA, his son and daughter-in-law George
and
Debbie Passmore and his son and daughter-in-law David and Lianne
Passmore of Honolulu,
HI, and by his son and daughter-in-law Mark and Jennifer Passmore of
Gainesville, GA.
Tom
is survived by his
grandchildren James Wesley Passmore, Jeremiah Passmore, Celestine
Pandolph,
Joshua Passmore, Caleb Passmore, Nathaniel Passmore, Adrian Hughes,
Justin
"Gus" Hughes, Thomas Roy Passmore, Brian Passmore, Jamie Naboa,
Karissa Passmore, Zachary Passmore, Patrick Passmore, Jordan Watase,
Jake
Watase, Jace "J.T." Watase, Houston Rockwood, Bonnie Rockwood,
Randall Rockwood, Skyler Passmore, Keelan Passmore and Austin Passmore.
Tom
is survived by his
great grandchildren Julian Hughes, Celina Hughes, Emmanuel Hughes,
Samuel
Hughes, Adriana Hughes, Charles "Charlie" Hughes, Haley Passmore,
Kameron Passmore, Ethan Passmore, Ashlynn Passmore, Alisha Passmore,
Elijah
Passmore, Gabriel Passmore, Matthew Passmore, Isiah Passmore, Issac
Passmore,
Connor Passmore, Emma Shine Pandolph, Daysha Joy Pandolph, Chasen
Passmore,
Jayden Passmore, Lucas Passmore, Hunter Passmore, Logan Passmore, Zoe
Naboa and
Zander Naboa.
Tom
is also survived by his cousin Janie Mease Snowden and his nephew and
wife,
Brent and Lynn Carter of Hayesville, NC, his niece Karen Hasenauer of
Knoxville, TN, and his lifelong friend Rubin "Doc" Ledford of
Hayesville, NC and Canton, OH. He is also
survived by numerous other friends and relatives.
Tom
will be having a
traditional funeral at the Mountain View Funeral Home located at 513 #3
Murphy
Hwy., Blairsville, Ga. (sic) Visitation
will be on Thursday, January 19, 2012 from 6 p.m. To 9 p.m. and
services will
be held on Saturday, January 21, 2012 beginning at 2 p.m.
His burial will follow at the Hayesville
Methodist Cemetery located at 161 NC69 Hwy., Hayesville, N.C.

Mr. Charles Thomas Graves, age 61,
of Pat Haralson Drive, Blairsville, formerly of Riverview, FL, passed
away on
Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at his home following a brief illness. Mr. Graves was born on October 28, 1950 in
Tampa, FL, the son of the late Frank R. Graves and the late Twila O.
Adams
Graves. Charles had been a Tropical Fish
Farmer for the most part of his life.
After moving to Blairsville seven years ago he had a carpentry
business. Charles was an avid hunter and
a true sportsman. He loved the people of
North Georgia and the mountains. Mr.
Graves was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving Mr. Graves are one
daughter, Crystal Graves of Brandon, FL, one brother and sister-in-law,
Donald
and Sharon Graves of Cody, WY, two sisters, Judy Raimondi of Cleveland,
GA,
Nancy Junda of Dothan, AL, one grandchild, Chloe Perez of Brandon, FL,
many
other relatives and a host of friends also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a
later date and will be announced. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be
made to
the American Cancer Society in memory of Mr. Graves.
