Mrs.
Elva Louise Phillips, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Monday,
January 12, 1998.
Mrs.
Phillips was born in Penobscot County, Maine, on December 18, 1923, a daughter of the lat John Farquar and Louise
Mitchell
Farquar. She was a veteran of the US
navy, and served during World War II, and was stationed in Washington,
DC. She had lived in the Blairsville area
for the
past sixteen years, coming here from Davie, Florida.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of the American
Legion, Blairsville Post #121. She was
the widow of the late Charles w. Phillips, who passed away in 1996.
Surviving
are a song (sic), Charles P. Phillips, of Redondo beach, California;
and son,
John Phillips, of Blairsville; Grandchildren, Donald and Jennifer
Phillips;
Great grandchildren: Kevin, Christopher, and Brianna Phillips also
survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, January 14, 1998, at 11 a.m. from the
chapel of
Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Reverend carter Maddox
officiating. The following persons served
as pallbearers:
Tom Berry, Cathy Flood, Bill Curlee, Ken Mountz, Hank Hall, and Joe
Dyer. Interment was in Choestoe Baptist
Cemetery. Members of the North Georgia
Honor Guard presented military honors and served as honorary escort to
the
family.

Mrs.
Mae Margaret Deyton, age 91, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Monday,
January 12, 1998 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs. Deyton
was born in Union County, Georgia on December 4, 1906 the daughter of
the late
Griffin Young and Ida Taylor Young. She
was a homemaker and was the widow of the late Bright Deyton, who passed
away on
November 21, 1973. Mrs. Deyton was a
member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Surviving
are sons, Audrey Deyton of Blairsville, Harlie Deyton and Raymond
Deyton, both
of Tyrone, GA., Robert Deyton of Hampton, GA.; daughters, Ozie
Cunningham,
Stella Cunningham, Odena Gibson, Mary White, and Inis Conley, all of
Blairsville; Flora Chastain, a special friend of Blairsville;
thirty-one
grandchildren, forty-eight great grandchildren and sixteen great great
grandchildren also survive along with several nieces and nephews.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, January 15, 1998 at 2 p.m. from the chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Brent Chatham and Rev.
Guy
Bradley officiating. Special music was
presented by Liberty Ladies’ Church Choir.
Grandsons served as pallbearers. Interment
was in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mrs.
Willie
Anderson Smith, 95, passed away Monday at Union County Nursing Home. She had resided in Blairsville for the past
22 years. She was preceded in death by
her husband the late Rev. W.L. Smith.
She is
survived by two son and daughter-in-laws, Lynn E. Smith of Lake Dallas,
Texas
and Estell Smith of Smyrna, Robert and Eleanor R. Smith, Sr. of
Blairsville;
two sisters, Mrs. Clara Richie of China Grove, N.C. and Mrs. Artie
Leigh
Barnard, Kannapolis, N.C.; six grandchildren and grandchildren-in-laws
include,
Talu and Lee Epps, Kennesaw, Susan and Richard Tate, Lakeland, FL.,
Robert Jr.
and Kumiko Smith, Dietrich and Eddie Dyer, Blairsville, Patrice Smith,
Smyrna,
Lynnice and Eric Fuller, Smyrna; ten great grandchildren, Todd and
Grant Epps,
Taylor and Clay Tate, Robert III and Ed Smith, Charlie, Caleb and
Chandler Dyer
and Blake Fuller.
Services
were held in the chapel at Cochran Funeral Home, Blairsville, GA.
Thursday,
January 15th at 11 a.m. Services were
conducted by Rev. jack Dupree, and Rev.
Kenneth
Maloney. Eulogy was by Robert Smith,
Jr. Interment was in Memory
Gardens. Pallbearers included her
grandson, Robert Smith, Jr. and grandson-in-laws, Eddie Dyer, Lee Epps,
Richard
Tate, Eric Fuller and great grandson, Caleb Dyer. Honorary
pallbearers were the great
grandsons.

Ms.
Willa Mae Messer age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Tuesday,
January
13, 1998 following a period of declining health. Ms.
Messer was born in Towns County the
daughter of Garland and Ada Self Messer.
Surviving are brothers G.P. Messer,
Jr. of
Young Harris, Georgia; Forest Messer of Buford, SC; sisters: Claudell
Reitsynder of Canton, OH; Ora Rhae Gibson of Jackson, SC; Ella Faye
Ford of
Warne, NC; Dorothy Cecile Smith of Young Harris, Georgia and a number
of nieces
and nephews. She was preceded in death
by one sister, Payuline Heggarty.
Graveside
services were held Friday, January 16, 1998 at 11
a.m. from the Many Banister Funeral Home of
Young
Harris in charge of arrangements.
