Doris H. Van Cour, age 76, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2007 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, GA following an extended illness.  Mrs. Van Cour moved to Blairsville in 1992 from coconut Creek, FL.  She was born on July 29, 1930 in Rochester, MA, the daughter of Robert & Yvonne Burke.  Before living in Florida, the Van Cour’s lived for many years in Rochester and Taunton, MA.

Surviving Mrs. Van Cour are her husband of fifty-two years, Karlton of Blairsville; daughter, Susan Wilson of Blairsville, and son, Robert K. Van Cour of Taunton, MA; granddaughter, Bethany Wilson; three great-grandchildren of Hiawassee, GA; grandson, Robert S. Van Cour’ great-granddaughter of Cape Coral; sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Edward Wheeler of Rochester, MA.

Memorial services will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Meals on Wheels of Union County, Blairsville, GA.

frederick john wanamakerr

 

Mr. Frederick John Wanamaker, age 77, of Blairsville, GA passed away on January 19, 2007.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Kurt and Kimberly Wanamaker; daughter and son-in-law, Kristie and Gary Firestone; daughter, Jannette Villarreal, and also three grandchildren.  He leaves behind many kind and caring golfing friends at Butternut Creek Golf Course.

In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to your favorite charity in Mr. Wanamaker’s memory.

michael wayne nelson

 

Mr. Michael Wayne Nelson, age 61, of Blairsville, formerly of Atlanta, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Nelson was born on May 3, 1945 in Williston, NC; the son of Verna Grimstvedt Nelson and the late Merle Wayne Nelson.  Michael was known to his friends as “Skip”.  He had lived in North Dakota, Minnesota, Sweden, Boston and Atlanta.  During his trek, he received his VFA in Direction of Music Theater (after, as he says, “Majoring in Dropping Out”) and also a FilMag (equivalent to PhD without thesis) while in Sweden.  After twenty-eight years of theater and more than one hundred productions, he has more than twenty publications “nut to qualify me.”  Mr. Nelson was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving Mr. Nelson are his mother, Verna Nelson of Blairsville; cousin, Glenyce Bean of St. Paul, NMN; several other cousins, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. BEN Lewis officiating.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to your favorite charity in Mr. Nelson’s memory.

Mrs. Joyce Diane England, age 67, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, January 19, 2007 at Union General Hospital.  Mrs. England was born Friday, February 5, 1939 in Wayne County, MI to the late Russell Look and Irma Weast Henderson.  She was a member of St. Clare’s Episcopal Church and was preceded in death by brother, Russell Look, Jr.

Survivors include: husband, Carl England of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Frank and Deb Herbert of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Karen Herbert of Blairsville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Lynn and Stewart Blankinship of Blairsville, GA; brother, George Look of Wickenburg, AZ; sister, Darlene Folken of Estes Park, CO; grandchildren, Christy, Buddy, Jessica, Thomas and Katherine; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 22, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the St. Clare’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Susan Johnson officiating.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens.  Serving as pallbearers were Frank Herbert, Keith Herbert, Stewart Blankinship, Dan Prudy, Thomas Herbert and Buddy Herbert.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Union County American Cancer Society, PO Box 2984, Blairsville, GA 30514.

guy edward reid

 

Mr. Guy Edward Reid, age 84, of Blairsville formerly of Tucker, GA, passed way on Sunday, January 14, 2007 in the Cay County care Center following an extended illness.  Mr. Reid was born on July 6, 1922 in Oglethorpe County, GA; the son of the late Lester Reid and the late Sophie Mann Reid.  He was a veteran of the US Army and had owned and operated Reid Repair Company in Tucker, GA for over thirty-five years.  He was preceded in death by a son, Ken Reid in 2000 and by his first wife, Florence Sosebee Reid in 1995.  he was a member of the VFW and the DAV.  Mr. Reid was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Reid are one son and two daughters-in-law, Ray and Debbie Reid of Monroe, GA, Shirley Reid of Snellville, GA; three grandchildren, Justin, Josh and Phoebe, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 1 p.m. from Branan Lodge.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Wilderness Scouts of Blairsville, PO Box 807, Blairsville, GA 30514 in Mr. Reid’s memory.

Nell Colwell, age 89, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, January 17, 2007 at Union General Hospital.  Nell was born Friday, May 11, 1917 in Union County, GA to the late Edgar Lee Colwell and Georgia Bryant Colwell. She was a member of Fairview Baptist Church and was preceded in death by brothers, Neal, Grady, Hugh, Abner, Paul and Claude Colwell, sister, Edith Colwell and granddaughter, Robin Armburst.

Survivors include: daughter, Mildred Myers of Monticello, GA; granddaughter, Debra Humphrey of Monticello, GA; grandson, Stanley Guard of Covington, GA; granddaughter, Sandra Patton of Mansfield, GA; great-grandson, Church Armburst of Decatur, GA; great-granddaughters, heather Dudley of Macon, GA; and Victoria Chandler of Covington, GA; great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Dudley of Macon, GA; special care giver, Paula Johnson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 20, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Cochran Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  Music was provided by Martha Cone.  Interment was in Queen Cemetery.

marcus ralph baggett

 

Mr. Marcus Ralph Baggett, age 79, of Hester Drive Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2007 in Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mr. Baggett was born on march 29, 1927 in Feldsmere, FL; the son of the late William Baggett and the late Martha Bradshaw Baggett.  He was employed with the Kennedy Space Center as an Engineer, which he was so proud of.  He was listed in the Smithsonian Institute as one of the Engineers who worked on the Saturn 5 Space Shuttle and was also a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.  Marcus loved his family and church and also loved playing the piano.  His Pastor, family, and friends compared him to Jimmy Stuart.  He was a veteran of the US Air Core of WWII.  Mr. Baggett was a member of the Blairsville Church of Christ.

Surviving Mr. Baggett are his loving wife of forty-one years, Neva V. Brown Baggett of Blairsville; their children, Donna and Karl Amidon of West Mont, IL; Gary and Cindy Baggett of Joliet, IL; Jeffrey and Tina Baggett of El Paso, IL; Gilda McIntosh of Spring Hill, TN; Frank Guynn of King George, VA; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Billie Baggett of Denver, CO; one sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Tom Mier of Lake City, FL; ten grandchildren, Benjam, Nathan, Melissa, Angie, Amy, Abby, Mollie, Tammy, Paige and Stacy; seven great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 23, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Blairsville Church of Christ with Minister, Terry Stuart, Minister, Aaron Stanley and Mark Cargill officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Mark Cargill, Aaron Stanley, Jake Colwell, Nathan Amidon, Benjamin Amidon and Rusty Logan.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were the men’s Prayer Breakfast Group of the Blairsville Church of Christ and the Members of the Experimental Air Craft Association.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery with the North GA. Honor Guard conducting Military Honors.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Mrs. Elsie Katherine Dean, age 70, of Jones Creek Rd. S. Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2007 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Dean was born on April 21, 1936 in Littcarr, KY; the daughter of the late Ted Tolliver and the late Annie Thornsbury Tolliver.  She and her husband Glen owned and operated the Georgia Trader, which was located on the Blue Ridge Hwy. for several years.  She was preceded in death by her husband of forty-three years, Glen R. Dean in 1995.  Mrs. Dean was a member of new Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Dean are two daughters and one son-in-law, Elinda Mears of Blairsville, Pamela and Danny Matheson of Blairsville; two brothers, Tommy Tolliver of Severville, TN, Ewins Tolliver of Ermine, KY; three sisters, Zola Miles of Premium, KY, Geraldine Lowe of Ebeton, KY, Irene McPeeks of Whitesburg, KY; six grandchildren, Glen Santiago, Glen Summerlin, Millie Milagros Santiago, James Mears III, Ernie Cardona Sr., Eric Figurroa; eleven great-grandchildren, Chelsie, Joseph,  Kayla, Candice, Marissa, Haley, Ernie, Mariah, Arnold, Joel and Caitlin; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, January 24, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Leon McDonald and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Alice McDonald.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers Steve Sexton, Melvin Cantrell, VAL Kozik, Randy Pagel, John Robinett and Eric Figurroa.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6-9 p.m.
