charles edwin denning, jr.

Stephenville – Charles Edwin Denning, Jr., 83, died on Thursday, January 20, 2005, at the Community Nursing Home.  He lived the past eleven months in Stephenville.

A joyful memorial service to celebrate a life well lived will be held this spring at the Blue Ridge Parkway in the mountains of North Carolina.  Charlie’s ashes will be scattered with those of his wife of 56 years, Joan.

Charlie was born on July 18, 1921, in Selma, NC.  He was married to Joan Damaris Jenkinson on September 19, 1948.  Charlie was a devoted husband, a caring father and grandfather.  He served with distinction in the United States Army with the 18th Mechanized Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, Troop B, in the European Theater of Operations during World War II.  He was with the 3rd Army in France, Belgium and Germany and then in Germany with the 7th Army.  He received three Bronze Stars among other honors.  Charlie established and ran his own business with his brother, Robert, in Miami, FL, Denning Plastic Tops, Inc.  His company pioneered several new techniques of fabricating and postforming plastic laminate counter tops.  Charlie retired at the age of 48 and moved to Blairsville, GA where he and Joan lived for thirty years.  He was known as “The Book Man” as he established a used bookstore and later sold books at numerous flea markets.  He loved to talk with people perhaps more than selling books.  He also enjoyed buying and selling property, White Castle hamburgers, and drives through the country.  His philosophy for living a successful life was to pay cash for everything and only have “One wife, one house, one car, and one coke” (even though he did raise four children).

Survivors include brother Robert and wife Janet of Princeton, NC; daughter, Caren Denning of Gainesville, GA; sons Richard Denning and wife Jennifer Rittenour of Stephenville, Carlton Denning and wife Robin of Asheville, NC and Chuck Denning and wife Johanne of Fort Pierce, FL; eleven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

His wife Joan; parents, Charles and Pearl Denning; and brother Alton Denning preceded Charlie in death.

We rejoice in the fact that he and his bride are together once again, forever.
