Ms. Naomi
Bowles age
75 of Blairsville formerly of Roanoke, VA, passed away on Sunday
January 16, 2011
at her son’s home following an extended illness. Ms.
Bowles was born on March 17, 1935 in
Richmond, VA, the daughter of the late Earnest C. Johns and the late
Nancy (Naomi)
Griggs Johns. She graduated from John
Marshall High School in 1953, attended Mary Washington College and
taught at
Collegiate School. She was a loving
mother, sister, aunt and was a friend to many. Ms.
Bowles was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving
Ms. Bowles
are one son and daughter-in-law, Neal and Elizabeth Bowles of
Blairsville, one
sister and brother-in-law, Betty Ann and John Markman of Richmond, VA,
nieces,
Mary Lu Fissel and Cathy Mays; nephew, Earnie Markman and great nieces,
nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A
memorial service will
be held at a late date in Richmond, VA. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be
made to
the American Cancer Society in memory of Ms. Bowles.

Bertha
Lee Payne Garner, age 89, of Blairsville,
GA, passed away Monday, January 17, 2011 in Austell, GA.
Ms. Garner was born in Union County,
GA, on March 30, 1921, a daughter of the late Ed Payne and Emma Harkins
Payne. She had worked at Meade Products
in Atlanta, GA for 39 years, and was a member of Mt. Pleasant #1
Baptist
Church. Bertha loved gardening,
especially flowers. She was preceded in
death by her parents, Edward and Emma Jane Payne; sisters: Mattie
Plott, Bessie
Gilreath and Bonnie Payne; brothers: Willie “Bill” Payne, J.P. Payne,
and
Hobert L. Payne. and the late. Many
other relatives and friends also survive.
She is survived by the following
family members: daughter, Shirley G. Groves, of Douglasville, GA; son,
Charles
Paul Garner, of Woodstock, GA; sister and her husband, Nora and Joe
Evans, of
Douglasville; sister, Martha Hawkins, of Auburn, GA; sister, Mary
Hensley, of
Blairsville; and sister and husband, Grapelle and Eugene Rich, of
Blairsville;
grandchildren: James E. Groves, Jr., of Douglasville; Charles Jory
Garner, of
Connecticutt (sic); Jennifer Lea Hyndman, of Maine; Millissa Janene
Garner,
Millinda Renee Glover, and Jason Eric Groves.
Many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral services were held Friday,
January 21, 2011, at 11 a.m., at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of
Blairsville, with Rev. Ray Potts officiating.
Special music was presented by The Kelley Trio.
The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers, Jamey Groves, Gary Payne, Billy Payne, Jory Garner, Perry
Evans,
and Eddie Rich. Serving as honorary
escort to the family was: Jason Groves, Glenn Payne, Jerry Payne. Burial was in Mt. Pleasant #1 Baptist church
Cemetery.

Mrs.
Martha June
Thrasher Carr age 94 of Baisto Lane, Blairsville formerly of Houston,
TX,
passed away on Saturday January 22, 2011 in the Union County Nursing
Home
following an extended illness. Mrs. Carr
was born on June 14, 1916 in Bloomington, IL, the daughter of the late
William
H. Thrasher and the late Pearl Summitt Thrasher. Martha
graduated from the Indiana University
with a degree of Bachelor of Science. Over
the years she volunteered with the Red Cross in Ft. Wayne, IN and had
volunteered with Hospice in Houston, TX with over fifteen hundred hours
of
service. She had received several awards
and recognitions for her many hours of volunteer work. Martha was a
loving
mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She
was preceded in death by her husband,
Leonard Allen Carr in 1985 and by a daughter, Susan Carr Helpap in 2006
and by
three brothers, Bob, Winifred and Woodrow, six sisters; Peggy, Mary,
Irene,
Betty, Gladys and Wilma. Mrs. Carr was a
member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston.
Surviving
Mrs. Carr
are one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Linda Carr of Blairsville,
one
daughter, Julia Kuppenheimer of Blairsville, nine grandchildren, Gregg
and
Stephan Kuppenheimer, Allyn Olson, Beth Piper, Jennifer Torluemke,
Natalie
Staley, Henry (Hank) Carr, Kristen Zajicek and Manisha Yeagar, fourteen
great
grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.
A
memorial service
will be held on Saturday February 12, 2011 in Houston, TX with
interment
following in the Memorial Oaks Cemetery. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family
requests that memorials may be made to United Hospice or the American
Cancer
Society in memory of Mrs. Carr.

Mrs.
Martha Mae
Paterson age 82 of Trackrock Branch Rd., Blairsville passed away on
Monday January
17, 2011 in the Gold City Convalescent Center in Dahlonega following an
extended illness. Mrs. Paterson was born
on May 29, 1928 in Polk County, FL, the daughter of the late Marcus
Duke and
the late Margrete Carpenter Duke. She
was a graduate of Florida Southern College and had taught school with
the
Orange County School System for over forty years. She
was a loving mother, grandmother and great
grandmother. Mrs. Paterson was a member
of Trackrock Baptist Church.
Surviving
Mrs.
Paterson are one son, Judson L. Paterson of Blairsville, three
grandchildren,
Daniel Lee, Marcus and Matthew Paterson, many other relatives and
friends also
survive.
No
services are
planned at this time. In lieu of flowers

Mr.
Robert Eugene Vanderlike age 82 of Havenwood Rd., Blairsville passed
away on
Tuesday January 18, 2011 at his home following an extended illness. Mr. Vanderlike was born on September 14, 1928
in Rochester, NY, the son the late Peter Vanderlike and the late Violet
Griffin
Vanderlike. He retired from the US Army
as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1972. He
served in WWII, Korean and the Vietnam Wars. He
was a loving and caring husband. He was
preceded in death by a sister, Betty
Douglas. Mr. Vanderlike was a member of
the Mountain Presbyterian Church.
Surviving
Mr. Vanderlike are his loving wife of eleven years, Betty Sutherland
Vanderlike
of Blairsville, two sons, David Vanderlike of Pensicola, (sic) FL.,
Robert N.
Vanderlike of Ocala, FL., one daughter, Cynthia Vanderlike of Tampa,
FL., five
grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.
Interment
and
graveside services will be held on Friday January 28, 2011 at 1 p.m.
from the
Georgia National Cemetery with military honors provided by the US Army.
A
memorial service will follow at a later date from the Mountain
Presbyterian
Church with Rev. Travis Adams officiating. In
lieu of flowers if you wish, the family
requests that memorials may be made to the Mountain Presbyterian Church
in
memory of Mr. Vanderlike.

Mrs.
Maxine Minter
Settegast age 88 of Cozy Cove Rd,. Blairsville passed away on Friday
January 14,
2011 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness. Mrs. Settegast was born on March 16, 1922 in
Gilmer, TX, the daughter of the late Newman Minter and the late Myrtle
Alford
Minter. She retired in 1996 from the
University of Washington Hospital with over thirty-nine years of
service. Maxine loved to read, listen to
music, dancing
and she was a roller skater until she was in her sixties. She was an artist at heart. She
did fine art and did restoration for the
museum of fine arts in Houston and also for private collectors. She was preceded in death by her husband,
William J. Settegast in 1997 and a brother, William Lathan Minter. Mrs. Settegast was of the Non Denominational
faith.
Surviving
Mrs.
Settegast are two daughters, Coranelle Horn and Lorin Zimmerman both of
Blairsville, two grandchildren, Lara Michelle Lambert and Ashley Lynn
Lawrence,
one great grandchild, Maddison A. Lawrence, many other relatives and
friends
also survive.
The
family will
receive friends at the residence at a later date. In

Mrs.
Marilyn Coleen
White age 78 of Anvil Court, Blairsville passed away on Monday January
17, 2011
at her home following an extended illness. Mrs.
White was born on October 22, 1932 in
Chicago, IL, the daughter of the late Thomas Parker and the late Marie
Buckley
Parker. Marilyn was a Master Teacher
with the Melrose Park District 89 School System for over thirty-two
years. She was a great teacher who loved
children and
loved her profession. She loved animals.
Marilyn was a loving wife, mother
,grandmother and great grandmother. Mrs.
White was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church in Cape Coral,
FL.
Surviving
Mrs. White
are her loving husband of fifty-three years, Thomas White of
Blairsville, three
sons and daughter-in-laws, Thomas J. and Karen White of Tampa, FL,
Richard and
Susie (Barnes) White of Blairsville, John and Theresa White of
Blairsville,
seven grandchildren, Daniel, Kerri, Johnny, Heather, Meghan, Jessica
and Aimee,
one great grandchild, Abigail, many other relatives and friends also
survive.

Mrs. Mary
Spencer
Anderson age 98 of Copperhead Rd., Blairsville formerly of Chicago, IL,
passed
away on Tuesday January 18, 2011 at her home following an extended
illness. Mrs. Anderson was born on
September 24, 1912
in Pratt County, KS, the daughter of the late J. Oliver Spencer and the
late
Daisy Dean Bruce Spencer. Mary was an
active volunteer for her church, Misericordia (a home for handicapped
children), Literacy Chicago, a women’s shelter in Chicago and taught
homemaking
skills to single mothers in the Robert Taylor Homes located in the
inner city. She also dispersed second hand
clothing for
needy children after cleaning and mending them. In
Union County she was a SAFE volunteer who
sewed bags for ladies entering the program. Mrs.
Anderson worked as a legal secretary for
most of her adult life. She was preceded
in death by her husband, James Anderson in 1974 and by one sister,
Sarah Seery
and by three brothers, Eugene, Donald and Robert Spencer. Mrs. Anderson was a member of the Pilgrim
Faith United Church of Christ in Oak Lawn, IL.
Surviving
Mrs.
Anderson are one daughter and son-in-law, Judith and William McKellips
of
Blairsville, one sister and brother-in- law, Virginia and Charles
Rumplik of
Young Harris, three grandchildren, John Kevin Mohan (Anne), Dr.
Jacqueline
Mohan (Paul Frankson), and Elizabeth Lindsey (Michael), eight great
grandchildren, James, Elizabeth, Christina and Spencer Mohan; Jonathan,
Julia,
Danielle, and Michael Lindsey, one special friend, Opal Collins, and
numerous
nieces and nephews also survive.
A
memorial service
will be held on Sunday January 30, 2011 at 4 p.m. from the Mountain
View Chapel
with the Rev. Dr. Steve Midkiff officiating. Interment
will follow in the Cedar Park
Cemetery in Chicago, IL. The family will

Alwaine B.
Totherow age 77 of Nottely Shores, Blairsville passed away on Monday
January 17,
2011 in the Heritage Health Care in Blue Ridge following an extended
illness. Mrs. Totherow was born on April
3, 1933 in
Union County, the daughter of the late Edley Burnette and the late
Alvie
Mahaffey Burnette. She was a loving
wife, mother, sister and grandmother. She
was preceded in death by two brothers, Eugene and Gerald Burnette, two
sisters,
Norma Jean George and Brenda Sosebee. Mrs.
Totherow was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.

Mrs.
Totherow are her loving husband, Lawrence Totherow of Blairsville, one

and son-in-law, Gail and Joe Sciota of Suwanee, GA, one son, Edward

held on Thursday January 20, 2011 at 11 a.m. from the Mountain View
Chapel with
the Rev. Chad Underwood, Rev. Tommy Young and Rev. Hubert Legg
officiating. Special Music was presented
by Becky Rogers
and Dana Nelson. The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Randy
Sosebee,
Bill, Robert and George Burnette, Justin Cook and Wayne Dills Jr. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Thomas
Daniel Hutson, Christine and Ashley Sciota. Interment
followed in the Philadelphia Baptist
Church Cemetery. The family met with
friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m.
