mr. ernest harkins

 

            Mr. Ernest Harkins, age 63, OF Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, January 17, 1999 in Lanier Park Hospital in Gainesville, Georgia.

            Mr. Harkins was born in Union County, Georgia, on Wednesday, June 19, 1935, a son of the late John Berry Harkins and Bessie Bowers Harkins.  He was a carpenter and had lived most of his life in this area.

            Survivors include his wife, Velma Brown Harkins, of Blairsville; daughter and son in law, Donna and Jerry “Bone” Carpenter, of Blairsville; son and daughter in law, Chief Mst. Sgt. James M. and Debbie Harkins, of BonAire, Georgia; son and daughter in law, Ernie and Diane Harkins, of Blairsville; Mother in law, Bennie Lee Brown, of Blairsville, Georgia; sister, Lorene Abercrombie, of Suches; and brother, Mac Harkins, of Blairsville; two grandbabies, Kayleigh and Megan Harkins, both of BonAire, GA; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 19, 1999 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev Horace Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by Cynthia Lance and Bonnie and Larry Henderson.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jim Brooks, John Franklin Brown, J.E. Corn. J.M. Dyer, James W. Jones and Sam bailey.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Leonard Sosebee, Doug Hughes, Randy Brown, and Hoyt Marrell.  Interment was in Coosa Methodist Church Cemetery.

mr. billy holbrook

 

            Mr. Billy Holbrook, age 60, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, January 15, 1999, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Holbrook was born Thursday, December 29, 1938, in Union County, Georgia, a son of the late Weldeon Holbrook and Hazel Walker Holbrook.  Mr. Holbrook was a member of Bethlehem Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by a brother, David Holbrook.

            Survivors include his wife, Carol Holbrook, of Blairsville, Georgia; step mother, Edith Wheeler of Blairsville; step father, Junior Wheeler, of Blairsville; daughter, Patricia Davidson, of Conyers, GA; son Dale Holbrook, of Loganville, GA; son, Danny Holbrook, of Conyers, GA; son, Darrell Holbrook, also of Conyers; step son, Jerry Chambers, of Milledgeville, GA; step daughter, Denise Mann of Forest Part, GA;  brother, Sammy Holbrook, of Blairsville; sisters Peggy Ann Lawerence, of Rex, GA; brother, Randy Holbrook, both of Blairsville,  and sister, Linda Gail Holbrook, also of Blairsville, 7 grandchildren, and 2 step grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 17, 1999 at 2 p.m. from Bethlehem Baptist Church with Rev. Ray Potts and Rev. Vernon Davenport officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Bryan Nix, Bryan Holbrook, Rodney Holbrook, Roy Hefner, Richard Tanner, Troy Ledford, and Jamie Davidson.   Interment was in the church cemetery.

mrs. mae tritt

 

            Mrs. Mae Tritt, age 87, of Suches, Georgia, passed away Friday, January 22, 1999, at her residence following an extended illness.

            A native and lifetime resident of Union County, Georgia, Mrs. Tritt was a homemaker and a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church #2,
The Hill Church” in Suches, Georgia.

            Survivors include   her husband of 61 years, Rev. Clarence C. Tritt, of Suches, Georgia; daughter and sons-in-law, Kathrine and Jim Norris, of Dahlonega, Georgia; Betty T. and Frank Davis, of Mableton, Georgia; one son, Mr. Charles “Bo” Tritt, of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren, Evangeline N. Voss, of Gainesville, Georgia, Dale J. Norris, of Dahlonega, Georgia; Lucinda Helton, of Suches, Georgia; Leslie VanHoozer, of Dallas,  Georgia; Dana McDonald, of Kennesaw, Georgia; and Michelle Tritt, of Jacksonville, Florida; 8 great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Payne, of Destin, Florida; and Mrs. Edna Warner, of mesa, Airzonia, several nieces and nephews and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held for 2 p.m. Monday, January 25, 1999, from the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church #2, “The Hill Church” in Suches, Georgia.  The Everett Thompson and Rev. Donald Tritt will officiate, with the interment to follow in the Church Cemetery.

mr. charlie e. gregory, sr.

 

            Mr. Charlie E. Gregory, Sr., age 72, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 1999, at his home. 

            Mr. Gregory was born in Union County, Georgia on Thursday, May 6, 1926, a son of the late Joseph Gregory and Isabel Harkins Gregory.  Mr. Gregory was retired from the US Air Force, and also Notla Water Authority.  He had lived most of his life in this area.

            Survivors include his daughters: Sharon Gregory, of Blairsville; Joy Gregory, of Conyers, Georgia; sons, Charlie Gregory, Jr., of Blairsville and Lindsay Gregory, of Ellijay; brothers: Arvil Gregory, of Blairsville, Harley Gregory, of Blairsville; sisters: Ella Watkins, Lula Mae Parker and Velma Watkins, all of Suches; and Effie Blackburn, of Blairsville; six grandchildren: Chuck Gregory, Josh Gregory, Derek Stephens, Dana Stephens, Tyler Gregory, and Kyle Gregory. 

Funeral services were held Friday, January 22, 1999 at 11 a.m. from Antioch Baptist Church, with Rev. Tommy Seay officiating.  Special music was presented by Susie Phillips, Louise DeLong and Sarah Kelley.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Chuck and Josh Gregory, Derek Stephens, Tyler Gregory, Charlie Gregory Jr., and Lindsay Gregory.  Interment was in Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors presented by members of North Georgia Honor Guard.

mr. jesse lamar davis

 

            Mr.  Jesse Lamar Davis, age 63, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, January 16, 1999 at his home following an extended illness.

            Mr. Davis was born in Appling County, Georgia, on Wednesday, November 6, 1935, a son of Alice Reynold Davis, and the late Ralph Davis.  He was a supervisor for a trucking company, Ploof Trucklines, where he had worked for 35 years.  Mr. Davis was an avid outdoorsman.  He had lived in Blairsville since 1993, coming here from Jacksonville, Florida.

            Survivors include his wife, JoAnn Davis, of the home; mother, Alice  Dale, of Swainsboro, Georgia; daughter and son in law, Jennifer Lynn and Nathan Hale, of Callihan, Florida; brothers: jack Davis, of Middleburg, Florida, Joseph Horne, Johnny Horner and Jeffery Horne, all of Swainsboro, Georgia; sisters: Joyce Bosch, of Baumont, Texas  and Joan Paythress, of Swainsboro; two grandchildren, Joshua Hale and Victoria Hale also survive, along with many friends and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Monday, January 18, 1999 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Vance Reynolds officiating.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens.

mr. william lester rathbone

 

            Mr. William Lester Rathbone, age 80, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, January 21, 1999 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Rathbone was born in Newport, Tennessee, on Saturday, July 20, 1918, a son of the late Fate Rathbone and Annie Clark Rathbone.  He was a US Army veteran of WW II.  Mr. Rathbone had been a poultry farmer before his retirement.

            Funeral services were held Saturday, January 23, 1999 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Harley Hunter and Rev. Amos Creel officiating.  Special music was presented by Steve and Mary Newton.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Doug Davenport, Nelson Pickelsimer, Rowe Nichols, Steve Newton, Doug King and Bill Mason.  Interment was in Old Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.
