florence joiner

Florence Thompson Joiner, age 83, died Monday, December 20, 2003 at the Union County Nursing Home.  She was born on September 19, 1909 in Harris County, Georgia, the daughter of Lillie Belle Ellington Thompson and Eugene Thompson.  She is survived by one son, Douglas, of Morganton; four grandchildren, Eugene, Douglas, Nancy and John McKay; and five great grandchildren.

Mrs. Joiner graduated from Harris County High School and State Normal College with a degree in accounting.  She married Doc Madison Joiner of Montezuma, Georgia.  She retired after 40 years with the Columbus Iron Works Company.

Mrs. Joiner was active in several Southern Baptist Churches where she served in every office but Pastor and Deacon.  As Director of the WMU at Manchester First Baptist she started a mission program at the local nursing home which is still active.

Mrs. Joiner was active in several historical organizations including United Daughters of the Confederacy, D.A.R., Colonial Dames, Magna Carta Dames and First Families of Georgia.  Her great grandfather Vincent Thorpe was a well know Baptist preacher in Georgia who was a delegate to the convention in Augusta that founded the Southern Baptist Convention.  Her great, great grandfather James Watt of Scotland invented the steam engine.  His son, Hugh Watt, was one of the early settlers of Muscogee County, Georgia.  His five daughters, one of whom was Mary Watt McKay (Mrs. Joiner’s great grandmother) had children who became the leaders of Columbus, Georgia and whose children and grandchildren are still leading families of Columbus and of Georgia.  Her Daddy, Gene Thompson, was land poor after “the war” and the boll weevil and resorted to running a government distillery making corn whiskey in order to save the family farm.  This made him unpopular among Baptists so he joined the Methodist Church.  Florence Joiner spent her entire life trying to make amends.
