mr. mack k. stephens

 

Mr. Mack K. Stephens, age 71, of Ledford Road, Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, January 22, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Stephens was born on May 25, 1930 in Union County, the son of the late George Stephens and the late Sally Young Stephens.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church.  Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by a son, Robert Hoyt Stephens in 2000.

Surviving Mr. Stephens are his loving wife of fifty two years, Reida Warren Stephens of Blairsville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Shirley Dyer of Blairsville, Sharon and Sammy Owenby of Dahlonega; one brother, J.C. Stephens of Blairsville; daughter-in-law, Dianna Stephens of Tate, GA; eight grandchildren, Craig Dyer, Allison Dyer, Wesley Owenby, Sarah and Kyle Ozaki, Madison Owenby, Eli Stephens, Nathanael Stephens, and Joel Stephens; one great grandchild, Owen Ozaki, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, January 24, 2002 at 2:30 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Brent Chatham and Rev. Guy Bradley officiating.  Special music was presented by Jim Kinnersley, Gloria Griggs and Ken Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Teddy Barnes, Ronnie Pirkle, Craig Dyer, Wesley Owenby, Nathaniel and Joel Stephens.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

mrs. frankie estelle martin daniel

 

Mrs. Frankie Estelle Martin Daniel, age 81, of Earl Patterson Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, in the Union General Hospital, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Daniel was born on Aug. 15, 1920, in Ringold, GA, the daughter of the late Morgan Martin and the late Alice Hasty Martin.  She was preceded in death by her husband, George Washington Daniel in 1995.  She was a member of the Victory Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Daniel are two sons and one daughter-in-law: Wayne E. Daniel of Epworth, GA, Joseph and LeeAnn Daniel of Kerrville, TX; four daughters and three sons-in-law: Barbara June and Jack McCloud of Douglasville, GA, Gwendolyn Jane and Roger Garrett of Blairsville, Alice Seabolt of Epworth, Gloria and Rick Corbin of Blairsville; one sister, Ruby Nelson of Billingsley, AL; one brother and sister-in-law, Morgan and Hazel Greenwood, SC; twelve grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at 1 p.m., from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Cecil Williams, Rev. Jim Brock and Rev. Junior Bryson officiating.  Special music was presented by Kim and Daniel Sims.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jeremy Seabolt, Dana Bridges, Bill Grant, Wayne Fowler, Chris Swann, and Zackery Whitner.  Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Cemetery.

mr. clyde waldroop

 

Mr. Clyde Waldroop, age 67, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, January 21, 2002 at his home.

Mr. Waldroop was born in Towns County, June 27, 1934, a son of the late Forrest and Mabel (Bowers) Waldroop.  He was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Eva Waldroop of the home; son, Richard Waldroop of Blairsville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Tim Henderson of Blairsville, GA; a sister, Vesta Byrd of Woodstock, GA; many cousins and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 23, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Music was by the Faith Singers. Pallbearers were J. E. Corn, Larry Hutson, Dorsey Dockery, Ernie Harkins, jerry Hood and John Nix.  Interment was in New Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. vaughn c. colwell

 

Mr. Vaughn C. Colwell, age 61, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday afternoon, January 25, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Colwell was born in Union County, GA on July 31, 1940, a son of Horace and Edna Colwell. He was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist church.  He had lived in Demorest, GA from 1977 until 1997.  He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

Surviving are his wife, Jackie Colwell of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Gina and Earl Sullivan of Blairsville; a son and daughter-in-law, Trannis and Jennifer Colwell of Clarkesville, GA; parents, Horace and Edna Colwell of Blairsville; brothers, Haskin and Reid Colwell, both of blairsville; four grandchildren and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 27, 2002 at 2 pm from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, GA with Rev. Vernon Davenport and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Music was provided by Scott Lance.  Interment was in the Harmony Grove Baptist Cemetery with Hubert Plott, Henry Cameron, Will Lockwood, James Gilreath, Rufus Everett and Fred Holbrook serving as pallbearers.  Wayne Colwell was honorary pallbearer.

mrs. mattie mae anderson burrell

 

Mrs. Mattie Mae Anderson Burrell, age 84, of Blairsville passed away on Saturday, January 26, 2002 in the Union County General hospital following an extended illness.  She was a resident of the Union County Nursing Home at the time of her death.  Mrs. Burrell was born on May 5, 1917 in Clay County, NC, the daughter of the late D.C. Anderson and the late Vennie Moss Anderson.  She was a lifelong resident of Clay and Union counties, and was a member of Woods Grove Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Neal Burrell, three sons, Hoyt, J.B. and Tommy Burrell, two daughters, Cathy Chitwood and Ethelene Burrell and Also two grandsons, Jonathan and Kevin Glenn Burrell.

Surviving Mrs. Burrell are four daughters and three son-in-laws, Betty Jean Lovell of Blairsville, Joann and Buford Garrett of Hayesville, Nancy and Robert Carpenter of Blairsville, Sarah Lou and Otis Young of Blairsville; six sons and three daughter-in-laws, Maurice (Bud) Burrell, Ben and Libby Burrell, Glenn and Patsy Burrell, all of Blairsville, Phillip Burrell of Dalton, Terry and Kelly Burrell, Carroll (Nig) Burrell, all of Blairsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Fred and Katherine Anderson of Cleveland, TN; twenty nine grandchildren, twenty one great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 27, 2002 at 2 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Jones, Rev. Waymon Lovell and Rev. Brent and Chatham officiating.  Special music was presented by the Faith Singers.  The grandsons served as pallbearers.  Interment followed in the Woods Grove Baptist Cemetery.

amelia b. markham

 

Amelia B. Markham, age 87, of Blairsville, GA, died Friday, January 25, 2002, in the Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge, GA.

She is a native of Allegheny County, PA and was the daughter of the late John and Kathleen Buzun.  She had retired as a waitress and was of the Baptist Faith.

She is survived by her daughter: Joyce I. Williams, RN; and her son-in-law: Robert A. Williams of Mineral Bluff, GA; a grandson, Stephen A. Williams of Aurora, IL; and a niece, Mrs. Jo Anne Sims of Saratoga, FL.

An entombment was held Thursday, January 31, 2002, at the Hillcrest Memorial Park in West Palm Beach, FL.

In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to make memorials to the: Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Hwy. 515 at Forge Mill Road, Morganton, GA 30560 or the Liberty Baptist Church, Pat Colwell Road, Blairsville, GA 30512.

mr. other marvin mcbrayer

 

Mr. Other Marvin McBrayer, age 88, formerly of Dallas, Georgia, passed away Friday, January 18, 2002 at Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville, Georgia, where had been a resident since May 1997.

Mr. McBrayer was born in Paulding County, Georgia, on August 10, 1913, son of the late James O.L. McBrayer and the late Amanda Brown McBrayer.  He was married for 40 years to Catherine Pace McBrayer of Dallas, GA who passed away December 20, 1996.  It then became necessary for him to move closer to his children.  Mr. McBrayer was employed by Bell Aircraft Corporation “Bomber Plant” in Marietta during WWII and received an award for his work on the B29 Super Fortress.  He later worked and retired from Camp Cap Company in Villa Rica, Georgia where he had many friends.  He also worked in Dallas, Georgia for 15 years.  He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church of Dallas, GA.

Next to his family, his love was playing baseball.  He was well known for his left hand pitching when he played for Aiken Park Ball Team years ago as well as other local community teams in New Georgia and Villa Rica.  He loved attending Atlanta Braves games with his family the old “Atlanta Crackers” years ago.  He enjoyed photographing family and friends, taking care of his cars, reading and keeping up with politics and spending time with his children and grandson.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Vaughn Morris of Blairsville; son, Jeffrey McBrayer and grandson, Master Daniel McBrayer of Mineral Bluff, Georgia.  Also surviving are many nieces and nephews and friends.

Funeral services were held Sunday, January 20, 2002 at 1:30 pm from the Benson Funeral Home Chapel, Dallas, Georgia with Rev. Joe Condra officiating.  Special music was presented by Mr. Charles Cole and Mr. Gregg Walker.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Billy Wheeler, Fred Williams, Marvin Frey, Timothy Frey, and Jamie Benson.  Interment was at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Dallas.  Benson Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
