Born in the north Georgia mountain community of union County on September 4, 1924, to William Carl and Vistina Hendrix Gurley, he served his country in the Amphibious Tank Division in the South Pacific during World war II.  Following his service to his country, he returned to Georgia and entered the University of Georgia earning a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctorate of Philosophy degrees in agronomy.  He married his long time sweetheart, Mary Ruth Nix in 1947.  They began their lives together and he entered his professional life as an assistant county agent with the Cooperative Extension Service in 1950.  He became a member of the faculty of the University of Georgia in 1954 and was voted Professor Emeritus of Agronomy in the Cooperative Extension Service by the University of Georgia Board of Regents in 1979.  he retired from the University that year.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Athens for 53 years.

More so than his professional accomplishments, his family wishes to remember his never ceasing love of others over self.  His rock solid stability, loyalty, and encouragements to others throughout his lifetime served as an enduring testimony to his life.  The memory of his hearty laugh, his love of life, and his gentle touch will sustain us.
