mr. robert lanier churchill, jr.

 

Mr. Robert Lanier Churchill, Jr., age 43 of Largen Rd., Blairsville formerly of Gainesville passed away on Sunday January 22, 2006 at his home.  Mr. Churchill was born on July 14, 1962 in Atlanta, GA, the son of the late Robert L. Churchill Sr., and the late Edrell Carter Churchill.  He had been living in Blairsville for the past seven years.  He was the owner of Southern Pride Builders of North GA.  Mr. Churchill was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Churchill are three children, Robert Churchill III of Blue Ridge, Chris Churchill of Blairsville, Nichole Cox Churchill of Ohio, three sisters, Barbara Churchill Behanna of Snellville, GA, Julie Anna Churchill of Covington, GA, Toni Frances Pisselee of Palm Coast, FL, one brother, Glenn Carter Churchill of Louisville, KY, his Fiancée, Sheri Biemeret of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, January 26, 2006 at 4 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Childrens Hospital of Atlanta in Mr. Churchill’s memory.  The family will meet with friends following the services at the funeral home.

mrs. trina barbieri

 

Mrs. Trina Barbieri of Gearing Dr., Blairsville passed away on Thursday, January 26, 2006 in the Murphy Medical center following an extended illness.  Mrs. Barbieri was born on October 10, 1920 in Holland, the daughter of the late Henry Hemkes and the late Marget Dykman.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Barbieri.  Mrs. Barbieri was a member of the Sunlight Community Church.

Surviving Mrs. Barbieri are one sister and brother-in-law, Isabel and John Sweetman of Homosassa, FL, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services for Mrs. Barbieri will be held at a later date and will be announced later.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to a favorite charity of your choice in Mrs. Barbieri’s memory. were held on officiating.

mrs. helen m. mayfield

 

Helen M. Mayfield, age 103, died peacefully in her sleep, Saturday January 21, 2006 at Stonehenge Assisted Living in Blairsville, GA.  She was a native of Springfield, Illinois.

She is survived by her daughter Mary Dahl (husband Harry) of Blairsville,.  Daughter-In-Law Donna Hoffacker of Springfield, Illinois. Grandchildren:; Dale Hamby of West Palm Beach, FL.  Jody Galloway of Springfield, Ken Hoffacker of Bloomington, Illinois, and Steve Hoffacker of West Palm Beach, FL; great grandchildren, Randy Hoffacker, Danny Hoffacker, Andrew Hoffacker, and Brennen Hoffacker.

Funeral will be at Camp Butler, Springfield Illinois January 26th at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Paul Olsen,  Officiating.

mrs. annabelle edwards

 

Mrs. Annabelle Edwards, age 93, of Mocking Bird Trail, Blairsville, passed away on Friday Jan. 27, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Edwards was born on Jan. 23, 1913 in Hillsboro, TN, the daughter of the late Elbert W. Wilder and the late Ida Ellen Jackson Wilder.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Stanley Edwards in 2003.  She had lived in Blairsville for the past  thirty years, moving here from Hialeah, FL.  Mrs. Edwards was a member of the Blairsville Church of God.

Surviving Mrs. Edwards are one daughter and son-in-law,, Mitzie and Jack Baker of Albany, GA, one son, David Stanley Edwards of Blairsville, two brothers and one sister-in-law, Lloyd and Mary Wilder of S.C., Elbert Wilder Jr. of Ohio, five grandchildren, Debbie Gannon, Jack Baker Jr., George Baker, David Edwards Jr. and Michelle Edwards, twelve great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday Jan. 28, 2006 at 11 am from the Blairsville Church of God with the Rev. John Davis and Rev. Jack DuPree officiating.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Jack Baker Jr., Jack Baker, George Baker, David Edwards Sr., David Baker Jr., and Kenny Boyd.  Interment followed in the Rutledge Hill Cemetery at 3:30 pm in Hillsboro, TN.

mr. curtis alvin cooper

 

Mr. Curtis Alvin Cooper, age 77, of Creekmont Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2006 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Cooper was born on Oct. 22, 1928 in Evans County, GA, the son of the late John Alvin Cooper and the late Malissa Hendrix Cooper.  He was a veteran of the US Army and a member of the I.B.E.W. Local #613.  He was a member of Jessie’s Sunday School Class and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville.

Surviving Mr. Cooper are his loving wife of twelve years, Katie Townsend Cooper of Blairsville, son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Joyce Cooper of Rome, GA, daughter and son-in-law, Karen and David Ball of Lafayette, GAS, daughter, Lois Sullivan of Woodstock, GA, son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Ann Sullivan of Blairsville, son, Tim Sullivan of Powder Springs, GA, five sisters and two brother-in-laws, Jeanette and Bill Walling of Jesup, GA, Edna Hicks of Pineville, LA, Hilda Pittman of Augusta, Alice Waters of Claxton, Nell and Raymond McGlashan of Glennville, GA, seven grandchildren, six great-grand children, several nieces, nephews, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday Jan. 27, 2006 at 2 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Fred Lodge and Rev. Chris Miller officiating.  Special music was presented by Terry Hooper.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Billy Johnson, Lewis Jordan, Harold Dyer, Jim Bass, Jim Dobson, Neal Moon, Leon Davenport, Bill Broderich and Harlan Underwood.  Interment followed in the Owltown Church of God cemetery.

mr. william thomas brown

 

Mr. William Thomas Brown, age 98 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, January 27, 2006 at Blue Ridge Health Care.  Mr. Brown was born Monday, April 8, 1907 in Towns County, GA to the late William Brown and the late Emma Caroline Brookshire Brown.  Mr. Brown was of the Baptist Faith.  He was preceded in death by wife, Cora Jane Nix Brown, sons, Oble, Francis and Wacel Brown, daughter, Mamie Ruth Bagwell and two infant daughters, brothers, John Brown and Vester Brown, sisters, Minnie Nix, Lona Dills and Lena Nicholson and grandsons, Terry and Tony Foster and Glenny Brown.

Survivors include: sons, Zeno Brown and Clinton Brown, both of Blairsville, GA and Benny Brown of Hiawassee, GA, daughters, Marie Burnette, Belvia Jean Barnes, Shirley Pope and Vassie Garrett, all of Blairsville, GA, and Dot Garrett of Hiawassee, GA. 26 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren and 25 great-great grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services were be held Sunday, January 29, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenny Beavers and Rev. Chad Underwood officiating.  Music was be provided by John Nix and Friends, and Kenneth and Elaine Young.  Interment was in Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were: Jerry Dyer, Darren Rowan, Jeremy Dyer, Josh Dyer, Bryon Davis and Rick Davis.  Honorary pallbearers included: Kenny Garrett, Billy Burnette, Johnny Barnes, Keith Barnes, Junior Brown and Calvin Burnette.

mrs. annie mae anderson

 

Mrs. Annie Mae Anderson, age 75, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Friday, January 27, 2006 at North East Georgia Medical Center.  Mrs. Anderson was born Sunday, September 7, 1930 in Union County, Georgia to the late Buford Long and the late Martha Duvall Long.  She was a member of Smyrna Baptist Church, and had been a very active participant in The Relay for Life.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie H. Anderson; a sister, Lennie Bell Dockery; a brother, J.C. Long; and a brother, Buell Long.

Survivors include: son, Lonnie Dockery of Murphy, NC; daughter, Loretta Morris of Blairsville, GA; son, Ralph Anderson of Leesville, SC; son, Charles Anderson of Blairsville, GA; son, B.L. Anderson of Blairsville, GA; sister, Callie Dockery of Hayesville, NC; sister, Johnnie Dockery of Young Harris, GA; grandchildren: Savannah Dockery, Amber Car4denas, Eli Morris, Shane Morris, Zach Morris, Shelba Brown, Matthew Anderson, Priscilla Anderson, Melissa Anderson Collins, Heather Anderson, Chris Anderson, Amanda Anderson, Tabitha Anderson, Leah Anderson, Kayla Anderson, Great-grandchildren: Caitlyn Collins, Vance Collins, Alexis Cardenas, Austin Abercrombie, and Kaylee Defalco.

Funeral services will be held Monday, January 30, 2006 at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with pastor Marvin Brown, and Rev. R.L. Martin officiating.  Interment will follow in Long Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers are: Wendell Lee, Gary Lee, Donald Fortenberry, Silas Brown, Oscar Dockery, Clifford Dockery, and Stanley Gibson.

The family received friends at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m., Saturday, January 28, and again on Sunday, January 29, from 7 until 9 p.m.

Mr. albert lyle self

 

Mr. Albert Lyle Self, 79, passed away on Friday, January 27, 2006.  Born March 7, 1926, in Union County, GA, he was a son of the late Marion Edward and Ollie Louise Nix Self.  Although his departure was a day of pain and suffering for family and friends, it was Mr. Self’s day of glory.  As a servant of God, he always had a willing spirit to help anyone in need.

Retiring from the U.S. Army after twenty years of service which included tours in Austria and Germany and three tours in Korea, Mr. Self moved to Columbia.  He worked for Shakespeare Corporation and was a building inspector with the City of Columbia, retiring in 1989.  He served as a deacon at Northeast Christian Church and also as a mason at Forest Acres Lodge 410.  He was a avid gardener and enjoying sharing many vegetables with friends and family.

A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Thelma Rogers Self; children and their spouses, Lamar and Miriam Self of Lexington, Gail and Wade Howell of West Columbia, and Gary and Peggy Self of West Columbia; brothers, Lawrence Self of Columbia, Dean Self of Blairsville, GA, and Glenn Self of Gainesville, GA; sisters, Augusta Gazaway of Blairsville, GA, and Valene Dyer of Dallas, GA; grandchildren and their spouses, Adam Self, David and Beverly Howell, Lisa Howell, Larry and Kristy Self, Laura Howell and Lindsay McGrand; and great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Evan and Alexis Self.

Services were held on Monday at 2 p.m. at Longcreek Wesleyan Church, 930 Longtown Road, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park.  Rev. David Johnston and Rev. Kent Small preached the service of celebration.  Visitation was held on Sunday, from 6-8 p.m., at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devin Street Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210.
