mrs. eula mae swain addington

 

Mrs. Eula Mae Swain Addington, age 76, of Swain Drive, Blairsville, GA passed away on Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.

Mrs. Addington was born on July 9, 1026 in Union County, the daughter of the late Charles Harvey Davis and the late Alice Naomi Rich Davis.   She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  She had retired from Union General Hospital where she was a nurse.   She was preceded in death by a daughter Laura Alice Swain in 1982, a son James C. Swain, Jr. in 2001, by her first husband Clyde Swain in 1968 and by her second husband Rufus Addington in 2002.  Mrs. Addington was a member of Salem Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Addington are three daughters, Betty Andrews of Blairsville, Dot Payne of Blairsville, Virgie Swain of Blairsville; one brother, Edward Davis of Blairsville; three sisters, Beulah Davis of Blairsville, Ellaree Fortenberry of Clermont, Geneva Chastain of Blairsville; six grandchildren, Robert Rogers of Blairsville, Elizabeth Hooper of Hiawassee, David Hancock, Greg Payne, Gwen Hooper and Alana Swain all of Blairsville; seven great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday Feb. 2, 2003 at 2:00 PM from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Special music was presented by Sarah and Wofford Kelley.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Tony Sosebee, Larry Davis, Benny Erwin, Ricky Abercrombie, Jimmy Alexander, and Dayton Dyer.  Interment followed in the Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. kenneth roger abercrombie

 

Mr. Kenneth Roger Abercrombie, age 46, of Blairsville, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2003 in his home.  He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Mr. Abercrombie was born on Sunday, April 8, 1956 in Towns County, Georgia.  Mr. Abercrombie worked as a carpenter and was of the Baptist faith.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Abercrombie.

Survivors include his parents, Garnie and Grace Abercrombie; one brother, Larry Abercrombie; a nephews, Barry Abercrombie; a niece, Melissa Groves 0 all of Blairsville.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 2, 2003 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hood officiating.  Mr. Abercrombie was buried at Harmony grove Cemetery, with Ray Zadai officiating.  Special music was provided by Shirley Grizzle.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Barry Abercrombie, Richard Dyer, Bill Coker, Eugene McClure, Neal Carrera, and Randy Grizzle.

mrs. joanne schaffner

 

Mrs. Joanne Schaffner, age 73, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, January 27, 2003 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.

Mrs. Schaffner was born July 23, 1929, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but lived most of her life in pompano Beach, Florida, where she worked in real estate sales and appraisal.  She had lived in Blairsville since 1983.  Mrs. Schaffner was predeceased by her husband Russell, and son, Rick.  She died from complications of emphysema.  Mrs. Schaffner was a member of the Butternut Creek Ladies Golf Association, and First United Methodist Church of Union County.

Survivors include daughters: Leslie Adams, North Carolina and Colleen Kersten, Indiana; sons: Brock Schaffner of Florida, Mark Schaffner of Georgia; John Van Aman, long time friend of the family; eight grandchildren: Julie, Jennifer, Jesse, Aaron, Luke, Todd, Jill and Jason; five great grandchildren: Nicholas, Melissa, Megan, Hayley, Hanna, and Chad Russell on the way.

Memorial services were held Sunday, February 2, 2003 at 1:30, from First United Methodist Church of Union County, with Rev. Eddie Herring officiating. 

The family has suggested memorials could be made to either: First United Methodist Church of Union County; or church of your choice.

mrs. mary antonoglou lovell

 

Mrs. Mary Antonoglou Lovell, age 80, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at the home of her daughter.

Mrs. Lovell was born in Chatham County, Georgia, on Wednesday, August 9, 1922, a daughter of the late James Anthony Antonoglou and Ruby Bell Brown Antonoglou.  Mrs. Lovell was a homemaker and had been living in the Blairsville area since 1995, moving here from Ft. Pierce, Florida.  She was the Presbyterian faith.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Katherine and Dale Godwin, of Blairsville; grandson mark and grand daughter Kacie, both of Blairsville; special niece and nephew: Mary Ann and Ronnie Robinson, of Dunn, North Carolina; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, February 1, 2003, at 4:00 PM, from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville.

The family has suggested memorials could be made in lieu of flowers to The American Cancer Society, c/o Sue Upchurch, 4344 Mulkey Gap Road, Blairsville, Georgia 30512 or to Hospice of Northeast Georgia, P.O. Box 586, Clayton, GA 30525.

mrs. alyce vanzant cowen

 

Mrs. Alyce Vanzant Cowen, age 80 of Blairsville, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2003 in the Chatuge Regional Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Abbyville, GA, and lived most of her life in Lake Butler, FL where she retired as a postal clerk.  She moved to Blairsville, GA last year.  She is a member of the First Baptist Church of lake Butler.

She is survived by her husband, William J. Cowen of Blairsville; three daughters, Sandra Brock of young Harris, Betty Tidwell of Eustis, FL, Rachel Sherwood of Havertown, PA; two sisters, Mildred Rogers of Ocala, FL, Mickey McVeigh of Jacksonville, FL; 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday February 2, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of lake Butler, with Rev. Charles Vanzant officiating.  Burial was in Dekle Cemetery in lake Butler, FL.
