mr. virgil astor lunsford

 

Mr. Virgil Astor Lansford, age 79, of Lunsford Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, January 27, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Lunsford was born on May 5, 1922 in Union County, the son of the late Daniel Floyd Lunsford and the late Laura Abercrombie Lunsford.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of the VFW, and was a WWII veteran of the US Army.  He was also a member of the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.  Mr. Lunsford was preceded in death by a daughter, Lillian Lunsford.

Surviving Mr. Lunsford are his loving wife of fifty six years, Wilda Woody Lunsford of Blairsville; two daughters and son-in-laws, Linda and Vester Dills of Blairsville, Judy and Greg Odom of Blairsville; three sons and daughter-in-laws, James and Janet Lunsford of Blue Ridge, Larry and Dottie Lunsford of Blairsville, Junior and Gloria Lunsford of Blairsville; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Ellen and Junior Norton of Dalton, Velma Cain of Blairsville; seven grandchildren, Jonathon Dills, Jamie, Kevin, Jason, and Jennifer Lunsford, Kaitlyn and Kameron Odom, steep grandchild, Chris Foster; one great grandchild, Russell Lunsford and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at 2 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Abernathy officiating.  Special music was presented by the Kelley Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Jimmy Lunsford, Travis Lunsford, Calvin Lunsford, Conley Lunsford, Bobbie Woody, and Gene Cain.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Daniel Gooch, Jack Lunsford, Jerry Lunsford, W.R. (Bodie) Stephens, and Junior Lunsford.  Interment followed in the Mt. Lebanon Church Cemetery.

mr. gary lee johnson

 

Mr. Gary Lee Johnson, age 40, of Blairsville, GA passed away Saturday morning, February 2, 2002 at Union General Hospital.

Mr. Johnson was born in Akron, Ohio, November 14, 1961 a son of the late Howard and Dorothy (Ledford) Johnson.  He had lived in Blairsville most of his life and had been a Harley-Davidson Biker all his life.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Ann Johnson of the home; aunts, Betty Symons and Sally Bandy of Murphy, NC; uncles, J.C. Ledford, Mack Ledford and Homer Ledford, Jr. all of Akron, OH and Jerry Ledford of Murphy, NC.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 4, 2002 at 2 pm at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Alan Becker officiating.  Interment was in Bellview community Cemetery in Murphy, NC.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

catherine a. conway

 

Catherine A. Conway, age 87, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Ocala, died Sunday, January 27, 2002.  She was born in Marion County, Florida on May 2, 1914, and lived in Dade County for many years.  She was graduated from Homestead High School in 1932.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil V. Conway; three sisters: Lucille M. Ewing, Inez M. Rhodes, Marguerite M. Wright; two nephews: Joseph E. Lewis, Ronald A. Rhodes; and one niece: Bettie Rhodes Polzin.

Mrs. Conway is survived by one sister and brother-in-law: Myrtle and Morris Gary of Ocala, FL.  She is also survived by five nephews: Edward A. Carter, Jr., of Melbourne, FL, Robert L. Carter of Marlow, OK, Dr. Norman E. Gary of Fair Oaks, CA, Leon Gary of Ocala, Sidney Lewis of Fletcher, NC; and four nieces: Carmen G. Sumner of Aiken, SC, Linda G. Miller of Blairsville, GA, Karen G. Hooker of Ocala, and Anita L. Phillips of Madison, TN; many great and great-great nieces and nephews; and one great-great-great niece.

The body was cremated in Blairsville and buried in the family plot in Homestead, FL.  A memorial service was held on Sunday, February 3, following the regular 10:30 service at Belleshire United Methodist Church, 1201 Westchester Drive, Nashville, TN 37207.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to a church or charity of choice.

enrique guzman, jr.

 

Enrique Guzman, Jr., age 44, of Blairsville, Georgia, died Monday, as a result of an auto accident.

Born in Chicago, Ill., he had moved to Hammonton, NJ. Where he lived for 7 years and then moved to Vineland where he was a resident for several years, before moving to Georgia.  He was a graduate of Vineland High School, Class of 1975 and while in high school he was on the track and soccer teams.  After high school, he attended the University of Mexico and then served in the U.S. Airforce.

He worked for several years in Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City as a security guard and a waiter.  In Georgia, he was self employed as an air condition and refrigeration specialist.

He is survived by 2 sons: Paul Michael and Marc Guzman, both of Upper Deerfield Twn.; 3 brothers: Alex Guzman of Florida, Martin Guzman of Mayslanding, Ruben Guzman of Vineland; and 1 sister: Maria Guzman of Mayslanding.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, at 11 a.m. at the DeMarco-Luisi Funeral Home, 1918 Landis Ave., Vineland.  Burial will following in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Vineland.

myron miller

 

Myron Miller, age 70, passed away in Diamond, Ohio, January 28, 2002.  A former Union County resident, he was the son of Dwight and Laura Saxon Miller.  He spent most of his life in the Akron area, engaging in optometry, farming and trucking.  He is survived by sons: Mark and Kevin Miller; daughters: Dianne Miller and Sharon Best, and seven grandchildren.

mrs. annie lucille reed flanagan

 

Mrs. Annie Lucille Reed Flanagan, age 72, of Deerfield Road, Young Harris passed away on Wednesday, January 30, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mrs. Flanagan was born on June 5, 1929 in Union County, the daughter of the late James Monroe Reed and the late Essie Bridges Reed.  She was a Union County native and a lifelong resident of Towns and Union counties.  She was retired from the Brumby, Knitting Mills of Young Harris.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and was a member of the Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Flanagan are her loving husband of fifty four years, Tom Flanagan of Young Harris; one son and daughter-in-law, Tommy and Irma Flanagan of Young Harris; one grandson, Todd Flanagan of Young Harris; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 2, 2002 at 2 pm from the Cornerstone Baptist Church with the Rev. Ricky Rogers and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by James and Rita Hooper and Brenda and Sandra Shook.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Allen Nichols, Steve Holloway, Ed Fortenberry, Hoyt King, Sandy Smith, and Terry Stroud.  Interment followed in the Old Union Baptist Cemetery.
