Sarah
Josephine Stallings was born on August 4, 1918, in Atlanta. Her parents were Marcus Anthony Jones and
Sarah Josephine Thomas.
After
earning her diploma from Commercial High School in Atlanta in 1936,
Josephine
went to work for the Citizens and Southern Bank. In
1946, she married Roy H. Stallings, Jr.,
giving birth to two sons in 1947 and 1950.
Josephine
worked in accounting for the C&S Bank in Atlanta before moving with
her
family to Newnan, GA and continued her career in accounting working for
different companies in Newnan and Whitesburg until her husband was
transferred
to Eatonton, Georgia in 1964.
Taking
advantage of an opportunity to return to school, Josephine became a
freshman at
Georgia College and State University when her youngest son was a junior
there
just after her 50th birthday. Majoring
in early childhood Education, she earned her bachelor’s of Science
degree when
she was 55 and accepted a job teaching at Butler-Baker Elementary
School in
Eatonton, GA, in 1974.
Josephine’s
specialty was teaching mathematics, and she quickly earned a reputation
for
having her students achieve high math scores on standardized tests. She would have a number of students stand at
the board working problems while the rest of the class checked their
work at
their desks. It was quite entertaining
to watch all the calculating, checking and cross-checking going on
during their
math sessions.
Josephine
taught school until she was 79 years old and upon retiring moved to
Blairsville, Georgia, in 1997. During
her life, she was very active in the VFW and Moose club and certainly
