Mrs. Rita Britton age 94 OF Wesley Mtn. Drive Blairsville passed away on Saturday Feb. 10, 2007 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Britton was born on Dec. 9,1912 in Toronto, Canada, the daughter of the late Digby Megginson and the late Myrtle Nelms Megginson.  She was preceded in death by a son, Bob Britton and a brother, Cliff Megginson.  Not only was Mrs. Britton a very loving wife and mother, also a friend to all who knew her.  She was an Angel in her families eyes. She was always gracious, generous and a kind soul.  Mrs. Britton was a member of the House of Prayer Church.

Surviving Mrs. Britton are loving husband of sixty eight years,Norman Britton of Blairsville, four sons and two daughter in laws, Doug and Judy Britton of Blairsville, Don and Ann Britton of Blairsville, Ted Britton and Bill Hilsinger both of Pacifica, CA., daughter in law, Mary Britton of Portage La Prairie, six grandchildren, Linda Langman, Diane Enns, Jonanthan, David, Vince and Jeff Britton, fourteen great grandchildren, Alisha, Cara and Jenaya Langman, Amy, Casandra, Alice and Emmy Britton,  Jana, Ryan and Nolan Enns, Denae, Rhett, Jack and Chris Britton, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday Feb. 17, 2007 at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jerry Helton and Rev. Bill Honaker officiating.  Special music will be presented by the House of Prayer Church choir.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers, Doug, Don and Ted Britton, Bill Hilsinger, Jeff Jefferson and Joe Walker.  Interment will follow in the House of Prayers church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials may be made to the House of Prayer Missions in Mrs. Britton’s memory.  The family will meet with friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 12-2:00pm.

lamonte g. (pops) bedford

 

The Lord took home Lamont G. (Pops) Bedford, age 77, of Prospect St., Oakland on Wednesday, January 31, 2007.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict with honors. Lamont was a retired truck driver from Colwell Construction of Blairsville, GA. Lamont and his wife Jean resided in Blairsville for 24 years and were members of Providence United Methodist Church of Blairsville.

Lamont is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Jean E. (Kuiper) Bedford; son, Keith Lamont Bedford and Shelly Nardozzi of Dunmore, PA; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Barbara Jean and Eric Upright of Susquehanna, PA, Noreen Lillian Bedford of Blairsville, GA, and Lori-Lynn and Jim Marcello of Windsor, NY; one brother and sister-in-law, Boyd (June) and Bernice Bedford of Susquehanna; ten grandchildren and great-grandchildren; dear family friends, Daryl Colditz and Chet Beamer; many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service was held on Sunday, February 4, 2007 at 3 p.m. at the Windsor United Methodist Church, Windsor, NY with pastor Debra Pritz officiating.

earl cosby

 

Mr. Earl Cosby,age 82, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, February 6, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home.  Earl was born Sunday, August 3, 1924, in Cook Co., IL, to the late Earl F. Cosby, Sr. and the late Roberta Ehrhard Cosby.  His family moved to Chattanooga in 1941 as his father was in the Army and stationed near there.  Earl met Betty in High School, and he joined the Marines as soon as he graduated.  He was on the Battleship Iowa as a gunner on the big guns.  After coming home on leave, Earl married Betty on April 8, 1945.  He was discharged from the Marines in September 1945 and went to work for the Exxon Plant and worked for 30 years before retiring. Earl was an elder in Central Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga for many years.  His family moved to Blairsville in 1976 and they built three homes there.  Earl worked as a counselor for the 700 Club and taught in several churches.  He attended Grace Community Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: wife, Betty Cosby of Blairsville, GA; daughters, Pamela Collins of Blairsville, GA and Deborah Sommer of Blairsville, GA; son, Gary Cosby of Chattanooga, TN; brother, Robert Cosby of Apache Junction, AZ; sisters, Judy Couter of Jackson, GA and Joyce Reinke of Hartwell, GA; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 9, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Smith officiating.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens with Military Honors provided by the North GA Honor Guard.  Pallbearers were David Collins, Chuck Sommer, Eric Collins, Brian Cosby, Wesley Sommer, Brett Eckerd, and Jason Taylor.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607.

laura frances sammons steadman

 

Laura Frances Sammons Steadman, age 84, of Blairsville, GA, wife of the late Henry E. Steadman, MD, died February 3, 2007 in hall County, GA.  The daughter of Hugh LaFayette Sammons and Bertha Augusta Hollis Sammons.  She was born may 2, 1922 in Greenville County, SC.  She was a long-time resident of both Tucker, GA and Hapeville, GA prior to residing in Blairsville.. Frances will be remembered for her great love of the outdoors including flowers, birds, and other wildlife.  She is survived be daughter Cecilia Lacey, Blairsville; sons Jeffery lacy, Norcross; Steven lacey, Gainesville; Dennis Lacey, Blairsville; stepson Paul Steadman, Fayetteville; brother John Arthus Sammons, Taylors, SC; 12 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Brother, Hugh Lloyd Sammons, Greenville, SC, predeceased her.  A memorial gathering of family will be held at a later date.  If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Mountain Shelter, Humane Society of Union County, P.O.
