MRs. rosa lee ray

 

Mrs. Rosa Lee Ray, age 82, of the Old Blue Ridge Hwy. Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, February 10, 2000 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Ray was born on April 1, 1917 in Covington, GA, the daughter of the late Raleigh Fleming and the late Vera Helton Fleming.  She had lived in Union County for the past fifteen years, moving here from Atlanta.  She was a member of the Bethlehem Baptist Church.  Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by her husband, James Franklin Ray in 1976.

Surviving are two daughters and son-in-laws, Lavonia and Shane Blackford of Blairsville, Cheryl and Ted Burns of Blairsville; two sons, Orin and Leonard Huckeba, both of Blairsville; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 12, 2000 at 11 am at the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Vernon Davenport officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  Interment followed in the Roseland Cemetery in Atlanta.

MR. richard charles voll

 

Mr. Richard Charles Voll, age 76, of Berry Lane, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2000 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mr. Voll was born on January 1, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late John Voll and the late Alma Marie Schmidt Voll.  Mr. Voll was a World War II Veteran, retired from the U.S. Air Force, and retired from the Kennedy Space Center.  He was a member of the VFW, Air Force Sgt. Association, and a member of the Retired Enlisted Military Association.  He was of the Methodist Faith.  Mr. Voll was preceded in death by a brother, John J. Voll.

Survivors include  his loving wife of fifty five years, Ann Elizabeth Fisher Voll of Blairsville; one son, Richard Louis Voll of Las Vegas, NV; one daughter, Janice Louise Davis of Mims, FL; two sisters, Vera Stoval of Tucson, Arizona, Dorothy Adams of Wilmington, OH; two grandchildren, Michele Fortenberry of Blairsville, Jamie Voll of Nevada; two great grandchildren, Kayla and Ryan Fortenberry of Blairsville; many other friends and relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 9, 2000 at 2pm from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Father Tim Gadziala officiating.  Interment followed in St. Clares Haven Columbarium

MR. theodore ernest sorensen

 

Mr. Theodore Ernest Sorensen, age 86, of Dun Worring Lane, Blairsville, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2000 in the Chatuge Regional Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Sorensen was born on November 16, 1913 in Hoboken, NJ, the son of the late Christ Sorensen and the late Agnus Busk Sorensen.  He was employed by the United States Department of Interior and was a Veteran.  He was a member of the Blairsville congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses.  Mr. Sorensen was preceded in death by a son, Ted Theodore Edward Sorensen in 1994.

Survivors include his loving wife of sixty years, Vivian Madison Sorenson of Blairsville; one daughter, Janet Sorensen of Lake Helen, FL; son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kazu Sorensen of Deland, FL; son, David Sorensen of Hanacroix, NY; one sister, Ruth Gordon of St. Petersburg, FL; three grandchildren, Daniel, Christine and Andrea Sorensen, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Services for Mr. Sorensen were held on Monday, February 14, 2000 from the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witnesses at 1 pm with Brother George Pepple officiating.

MR. felton mcclellon reece

 

Mr. Felton McClellon Reece, age 90, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2000 in a care facility in Atlanta.

Mr. McClellon was born in Union County, Georgia on Friday, January 28, 1910, a son of the late James Roberson Reece and Millie Hensen Reece.  He had lived in Marietta, Georgia since 1949.  Mr. Reece was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church.  His wife, Bertha Mae Seabolt Reece passed away in 1996.

Survivors include his daughter, Dardanella Melinda Reece Pentecost of Marietta; son and daughter-in-law, James Preston “Jim” Reece and Glenda Elaine Williams Reece, of Raleigh, NC; daughter, Pamala Rose Reece of Marietta; brother, Hoke Smith Reece of Blairsville; grandchildren and their spouses, Rhonda Patrice Pentecost Cline and Todd Christopher Cline of Hiram, GA, Johnanthan Preston Reece and Carol Ellis Reece of Raleigh, Sonja Denice Pentecost Atenhan and James Todd Atenhan, of Marietta and Rickey Darren Pentecost and April Patricia Glisson Pentecost of Marietta; great grandchildren, Kristina Nichole Cline and Candice Elizabeth Cline of Hiram, Joseph Daniel Pentecost of Marietta, James William Reece and Gwendolyn Elaine Reece of Raleigh; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 13, 2000 at 2 pm from Shady Grove Methodist Church, with Rev. Bill Honaker officiating.  Specially selected hymns were presented by Ken and Elaine Young.  Rev. and Mrs. Bill Honaker read letters from Mr. Reece’s children and Muriel Cash gave a history of Mr. Reece’s life.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Bill Woody, Bobby Woody, Allen Hamby, James Reece, Bill Hamby, and Leon Seabolt.  Burial was in Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery with Bagpiper Jacob Craig presenting “Amazing Grace” and “Abide with Me”.

dr. carl m. hood

 

Dr. Carl M. Hood, age 90, died February 12th following an extended illness.  He was a graduate of Emory Dental School and served as a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army during the Second World War.  He practiced dentistry in Decatur for 30 years.  Following retirement, he lived in Gainesville and Blairsville, Georgia.  Survived by his wife of 75 years, Ruth Osterhout Hood.  Dr. Hood was born in Sherman, Texas and was the son of Elizabeth Casteel Hood and Harry Hood.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Joye Hood and Mack Spates of Lakemont; son and daughter-in-law, Carol and Anne Hood of Midville; seven grandchildren, Sheri Spates Slappey of Atlanta, Sheli Spates Jones of Gainesville, Clint Hood of Louisville, Chip Hood of Grainesville, Chris Hood of Wadley, Clay Hood of Wadley, and Suzanne Hood of Statesboro.

A graveside memorial services with Reverend Eddie Herring, Blairsville First United Methodist Church officiating was held February 14th.  Grandson Clint Hood delivered the eulogy.  The body was cremated with remains buried at Flat Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Lakemont.

MR. william austin carney

 

Mr. William Austin Carney, age 63, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2000 in Emory University Hospital in Atlanta.

Mr. Carney was born in Union County, Georgia, on Thursday, March 4, 1936 a son of the late William E. Carney and Roselee Hooper Carney.  He was a lifelong resident of this area and was retired from the shoe factory.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and of Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114 F&AM.

Survivors include his wife, Frankie F. Carney of the home; son, William Reid Carney; son and daughter-in-law, William Franklin and Mary Ann Carney; son William Ed Carney; and son, William Lee Carney, all of Blairsville; a grandson, Cody Daniel Carney, also survives along with many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 12, 2000 at 11 am from Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Horace Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by The Pleasant Grove Singers.  Members of The Masons served as pallbearers, and also presented graveside rites at Pleasant Grove Baptist Cemetery.

mrs. cathrine joan bott

 

Mrs. Cathrine Joan Bott, age 87, of Forest Circle, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, February 13, 2000 at her residence following an extended illness.  Mrs. Bott was born on February 12, 1913 in New York City, NY, the daughter of the late Edward N. Westerfelt and the late Cathrine Kelly Westerfelt.  She was of the Lutheran Faith.

Surviving are her companion of over eleven years, Emrie Gottfried of Blairsville, many other friends and relatives also survive.

Memorial services for Mrs. Bott are planned for a later date and will be announced.
