Mr. Billy
Joe Cook,
age 65, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in
Union
General Hospital in Blairsville.
Billy Joe
was born
in Union County, GA on June 30, 1945, a son of the late Quinton H. Cook
and the
late Dolly Ross Cook. He was a school
bus driver for Union County School System, and a member and deacon at
Youngstown Baptist Church. Billy Joe was
also a Mason, and belonged to Young Cane Masonic Lodge, #597, F &
AM.
Billy Joe
will be
missed by everyone who knew him, but especially his family. His loving wife of 46 years, Wanda; brother
and sister-in-law, Donald and Opal Cook, of Griffin, GA; sister and
brother-in-law, Betty and Harry Daniels, of Smyrna, GA; several nieces
and
nephews, and many, many friends.
Funeral
services for
Billy Joe were held Saturday, February 12, 2011, at 2 p.m., in the
Chapel of
Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Jonathan Hood, Rev.
Marvin
Young, and Rev. Ned Wilcoxon officiating. Special
music was presented by Rhonda Hood, Martha
Davenport, Casey Jones, and Cody Short. The
following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Stanley Garrett, Buddy Legg,
Billy
Poteete, Ronnie Dyer, Bruce Dillinger, and Kevin Garrett. The following gentlemen served as honorary
escort to the family: J.M. Grizzle, Albert Davenport, Jim Stewart,
Angus
McGillis, Union County School Bus Drivers; and Deacons of Youngstown
Baptist
Church. Burial was in Union Memory
Gardens Cemetery, with Masonic Graveside Rites presented by Young Cane
Masonic
Lodge. Visitation began on Friday,
February 11, 2011, after 6 p.m., with the family especially meeting
with
friends from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m.

Neil
DeLoss Stone,
Jr., age 72, of Blairsville, formerly of Kennesaw, GA, passed away on
Monday
Feb. 7, 2011 at Piedmont Hospital following an extended illness. Mr. Stone was born on March 30, 1938 in
Chipley, GA, the son of Ruby Mallory Barkwell and the late Neil DeLoss
Stone
Sr. Neil grew up in Smyrna, GA, and
graduated from Campbell High School. He
retired from Lockheed Martin Corporation with over thirty years of
service. He was a veteran of the US Navy. Neil was a member of the Heart of Georgia
Travelers. He was a loving husband,
father, brother and grandfather. Mr.
Stone was of the Methodist faith.
Surviving
Mr. Stone
are his loving wife of thirty-one years, Jane Owens Stone of
Blairsville,
mother, Ruby Barkwell of Ellijay, three daughters and one son-in-law,
Laura
Stone and Catherine Stone of Scotts Valley, CA, Neia and Tom Gwaltney
of Coral
Springs, FL, one brother and sister-in-law, Dennie and Jean Stone of
Blairsville,
one sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Walt Broom of Ellijay, nine
grandchildren, Michael Urbani, Lindsay Urbani, Ryan Genovese, Jake
Bergman,
Tyler Long, Cara Long, Tory Schmitz, Jenna Gwaltney, Will Gwaltney, and
several
niece, nephews.
Funeral

held on Wednesday Feb. 9, 2011 at 4 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel.
Interment and graveside services were held
on
Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Baldwin Memorial Gardens Cemetery in
Milledgeville,
GA. In lieu of flowers if you wish, the

the United Methodist Children Home in Decatur, GA. in memory of Mr.
Stone. The family met with friends at the

Mr. J.C.
Odom, 86,
native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Tuesday,
February 8, 2011 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mr. Odom
was born in
Union County, Georgia, on September 8, 1924, a son of the late Gordon
Odom and
Leila Thomas Odom. Mr. Odom served
during World War II in the U.S. Navy, and was a member of New Union
Baptist
Church. Over the years, JC had been a
construction worker, a school bus driver, a sawmill operator, and was
retired
from Georgia Boot in Blairsville with over 30 years of service there. He really loved farming and gardening, but his
greatest love of all was his family.
JC had
been preceded
in death by his first wife, Fleeta Chastain Odom; a son, Bob Odom;
parents,
Gordon and Leila Odom; sisters, Irene Odom, Winnie Odom Bruce; and a
brother,
James E. Odom.
Surviving
family
members include his wife, Mildred Hunter Newman Odom; son &
daughter-in-law, Stanley and Kathy Odom, of Blairsville; son and
daughter-in-law, Tim & Debbie Odom, of Blairsville; Granddaughter,
Lisa
Odom Owenby; Grandson, Kirk Odom; granddaughter and husband, Brittany
and
Shannon Kelley; granddaughter and husband, Amanda & Daryl Eason;
grandson,
Kyle Odom; and granddaughter and husband, Krista and Chris Fox. Great-grandchildren: Justin Owenby, Adrian
Owenby, Kristen Odom, Jesse Kelley, and Bobby Eason. Many
other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services for
JC were held Friday, February 11, 2011, at 2 p.m., at New Union Baptist
Church,
with Rev. Harrison Bradley and Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Special music was presented by new Union
Baptist church Choir and Casey Jones. The
following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Kirk Odom, Kyle Odom,
Shannon
Kelley, Chris Fox, Travis Parker, Justin Owenby, Daryl Eason, and Chris
Waters.
Burial was in New Union Baptist Church

Bertha
Lee Payne
Garner, age 89, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, January 17,
2011 in
Austell, GA.
Ms.
Garner was born
in Union County, GA, on March 30, 1921, a daughter of the late Ed Payne
and
Emma Harkins Payne. She had worked at
Meade Products in Atlanta, GA for 30 years, and was a member of Mt.
Pleasant #1
Baptist Church. Bertha loved gardening,
especially flowers. She was preceded in
death by her parents, Edward and Emma Jane Payne; sisters: Mattie
Plott, Bessie
Gilreath, and Bonnie Payne; brothers: Willie "Bill" Payne, J.P.
Payne, and Hobert L. Payne.
She is
survived by
the following family members: daughter, Shirley G. Groves, of
Douglasville, GA;
son, Charles Paul Garner, of Woodstock, GA; sister and her husband,
Nora and
Joe Evans, of Douglasville; sister, Martha Hawkins, of Auburn, GA;
sister, Mary
Hensley, of Blairsville; and sister and husband, Grapelle and Eugene
Rich, of
Blairsville; grandchildren: James E. Groves, Jr., of Douglasville;

Mrs.
Gerda Hilde
Jones, age 85, of Wesley Mountain Dr., Blairsville, passed away on
Wednesday
February 9, 2011 at the Union County Nursing Home following an extended
illness. Mrs. Jones was born on April
18, 1925 in Karlrue Germany, the daughter of the late Julius
Schillenger and
the late Hildegard Bescla. Gerda moved
to the area in 1987. She was the past
President of the Georgia Mtn. unit of Church Women United. Gerda was a member of NARFE and volunteered at
S.A.F.E House. She enjoyed gardening and
was a self employed seamstress. Mrs.
Jones was a member of the St. Clare’s Episcopal Church.
Surviving
Mrs. Jones
are her husband Larry Jones of Blairsville and four step children
Brian, Bruce,
Sandy and Karen.
Funeral
services for
Mrs. Jones will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday February 19, 2011 at St.
Claire
Episcopal Church with the Reverend Frank F. Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family
asks that memorials be made to St. Clare’s Episcopal Church. The family will meet with friends following
the services at the church.

Everett
Garfield Payne, age 82, of Rex Payne Rd., Blairsville, passed away on
Sunday
Feb. 6, 2011 at his home following an extended illness. Mr.
Payne was born on May 16,1928 in Union
County, the son of the late William Payne and the late Laura Cook
Payne. He was a native and lifelong
resident Union
County and had been a Minister for over fifty years. He
always had a strong faith in God and his
family. Everett was a compassionate and
loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and
friend. He was preceded in death by two
sons, Troy
Payne in 1961 and William Buck Payne on Jan. 31, 2011, seven brothers,
Charles,
James, Grady, Herbert, Leonard, Arvil and Willard, two sisters, Lillie
Franklin
and Stella Dyer. Rev. Payne was a member
of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.
Surviving
Rev. Payne
are his loving wife, Patsy Payne of Blairsville, one son, John Payne of
Blairsville, five daughters and one son-in-law, Betty and Frank Gray of
Blue
Ridge, Bonnie Payne of Winter Haven, FL, Mary Payne of Ellijay, Janie
Rogers of
Jasper, TN, Sarah Payne of Jasper, GA, one daughter-in-law, Danna Payne

Hiawassee, two sisters, Myrtle Cook of Blairsville, Vesta Stroup of
Blairsville, one brother, Luther Payne of Blairsville, thirteen
grandchildren,
eleven great-grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also
survive.

held on Tuesday Feb. 8, 2011 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain View Chapel

Rev. Dexter Dockery and Rev. Terrell Jones officiating. Special

Mrs. Mary
Sue Brown
Huggins, age 84, of Wesley Mtn. Drive, Blairsville, passed away on
Tuesday Feb.
8, 2011 at Stonehenge following an extended illness. Mrs.
Huggins was born on Aug. 18, 1926 in
Andrews, NC, the daughter of the late Ulysses Grant Brown and the late
Florence
Mae Puett. Sue and Tom left behind a
legacy in which they raised their family and their Christian values. Sue was a caretaker of people in need in the
community. She volunteered at the Union
General Hospital for several years. She
was a loving , wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
Tom
Morgan Huggins in 2000, by two brothers, Ulysses (Bill) Brown Jr. and
James
Martin Brown, and by two sisters, Edna Mae Brown Nichols and Thelma
Faye Brown
Hunt. Mrs. Huggins was a member of
Liberty Baptist Church.
Surviving
Mrs.
Huggins are three daughters and one son-in-law, Diana Stephens of Tate,
GA,
Jamie and Jim Kinnersley of Blairsville, Sheila Huggins Dean of
Lilburn,
GA, two sons and one daughter-in-law, Johnny Huggins of Dunwoody, Joel
and Amy
Huggins of Blairsville, twelve grandchildren, six great-grandchildren,
many
other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were
held on Friday Feb. 11, 2011 at 1 p.m. from the Old Union Baptist
Church in
Young Harris with the Rev. Larry Allison officiating. Special
music was presented by Cathy Gregory,
Gloria Griggs and Mildred LeCroy. Mrs.
Huggins lay in state at the church on Friday from 12-1 p.m. The following gentleman served as
pallbearers, Kevin and Brian Kinnersley, Nathanael Stephens, Cole,
Dusty,
Jeramy, Cody and Joshua Huggins. Interment
followed in the Old Union Church Cemetery. Flowers
are accepted or in lieu of flowers if

Mr.
William Patrick
O’Keefe, age 87, of Murphy Hwy, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday
February
10, 2011 at the Union County Nursing Home following an extended
illness. Mr. O’Keefe was born on November
8, 1923 in
New Rockford, ND, the son of the late Patrick O’Keefe and the late
Cather
Herilihy. William moved to the area in
1961. He served in the Air Force in
World War II where he received two Presidential Citations and four Air
Medals. He worked as a general manager of
the Ables
Auto Company for several years. Mr.
O’Keefe is preceded in death by three sisters Catherine, Madilyn and
Alice, a
brother John O’Keefe and a daughter Joy O’Keefe Russell.
Mr. O’Keefe was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving
Mr.
O’Keefe are a son Ryan O’Keefe of Murhpy (sic), NC, three daughters and
sons-in-law,
Joni and Bryan Stockton of Murphy, NC, Gail and Rick Dillard of St.
Simons, GA
and Kelly and Mike Mull of Ringgold, GA, a sister Madilyn O’Keefe, four
grandchildren Kayla Ramey, Daniel Brown, Amber Russell and Matthew
Russell,
three great grandchildren Brady Ramey, McKenzie Russell and Mason Ramey
and
several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mr. O’Keefe were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday February 13, 2011 from the

View Chapel with the Minister Terry Stuart officiating. The

Mrs.
Darlene Payne
Thompson, age 60, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday evening, February 11, 2011. She
was born September 4, 1950 the daughter of
Dan and Wynnelle Turner Payne. Mrs.
Thompson was a homemaker whose life was centered around her family and
she
enjoyed doing crafts. Darlene was
preceded in death by her husband, George Grady Thompson, in April of
2010; and
her father. Dan Payne.
Mrs.
Thompson is
survived by her mother, Wynnelle, sons and daughters-in-law; Kyle and
Tabetha
Thompson of Canton, GA; Grady and Joyce Thompson and Perry and Christy
Thompson, both of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Marty
Payne
of Blairsville; brother, Joe Payne; sisters, Bonnie Bell, Jean Debord,

Payne and Gaye Nelle Simonds; and grandchildren, Trish, Nikki, Kalen,

Christopher and Lynette Thompson, Shauna and Josh Dyer, Kevin and

She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.

before her retirement. She enjoyed growing flowers and traveling with

husband. She was a loving wife, mother,
sister and grandmother. Mrs. Segraves
was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville.
