Garrett Guess

 

Garrett Guess, age 13, of Blairsville, Georgia, native and former resident of Sarasota, Florida, passed away Tuesday, February 10, 2004.

Garrett was a student at Union County Middle School where he played both football and basketball.  He was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.  While a resident of Florida he was a student at Ashton Elementary School, a member of the Sharks Swim Team and a member of Evangel Baptist Church in Bradenton, Florida.

Surviving are his parents, Jim and Donna Guess and sister, Lauren, all of Blairsville; maternal grandparents, Gary and Linda Wisener, Sr., of Lake Placid, Florida; paternal grandmother, Margaret Guess of Bonita Springs, Florida; many friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, February 14, 2004 at Choestoe Baptist Church with Rev. Dick Stillwell and Pastor William Jenkin III officiating.  Serving as honorary escort to the family were members of the Union County Middle School 7th Grade Basketball Team: Jared Arrant, Colton Beattie, Bradley Boise, Chase Burrell, Josh Colwell, Jake Farmer, Tucker Harkins, Luke Parker, Chad Shook, Tyler Susie, Josh Walker and Cody Youngblood.

The family requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Garrett to Choestoe Baptist Church New Building Fund; 4455 Choestoe Church Road, Blairsville, Georgia 30512.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

mr. johnny hughes

 

Mr. Johnny Hughes, age 67, native and lifelong resident of Union County, Georgia, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2004 at his home following an illness.

Mr. Hughes was born in Union County, Georgia on Tuesday, August 25, 1936, a son of the late Paxton Lee Hughes and Imogene Kelley Hughes.  Mr. Hughes had an equipment operator, working on road construction.  He attended Ivy Log Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Deaver Hughes of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Judy Carol and Larry Edwards of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina; daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Scott Hughes of Blairsville; brother, Tom Hughes of Blairsville; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Floyd Cagle of Mesa, Arizona; granddaughter, Jennifer Edwards of Pleasant Hill, North Carolina; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, February 16, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Jerry Karnes officiating.  Special music was presented by Larry Nichols and Dwain Brackett.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Jack Kelley, James Kelley, Gary Sosebee, Mike Hughes, Tim Hughes and Steve Colwell.  Burial was in Ivy Log Baptist Church cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

mattie payne plott

 

Mrs. Mattie Payne Plott, age 85, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA., passed away Saturday, February 14, 2004 in Chatuge Regional Hospital in Hiawassee, GA.

Mrs. Plott was born in Union County, on Sunday, August 18, 1918, a daughter of the late Ed Payne and Emma Harkins Payne.  She was a homemaker and member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church #1.  Preceding Mrs. Plott in death were her parents; her husband, Tom Plott, who passed away in 1992; a sister, Bonnie Payne; brother, J.P. Payne; granddaughter, Dawn Marie Prince; great granddaughter, Brooke Nicole Bridges.

Surviving are her daughters, Eula Harkins, Austine Colwell, both of Blairsville and Mary Belle Prince, of Carnesville, GA; son, T.J. Plott of Blairsville; six sisters, Bessie Gilreath, of Suches, Bertha Garner, of Blairsville, Nora Evans of Douglasville, GA., Martha Hawkins of Auburn, GA, Mary Hensley and Grapelle Rich, both of Blairsville; two brothers, Hobert Payne and Willie Payne, both of Blairsville; twelve grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 16, 2004 in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Alton Towe and Rev. Alton Williams officiating.  Special music was presented by Willie and Marjorie Wackle.  The following gentlemen were Pallbearers, Gerald Gilreath, Paul Garner, Eddie Rich, Glenn Payne, Billy Payne, Perry Evans, Gary Payne.  Burial was in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

jethro cline mahaffey

 

Mr. Jethro Cline Mahaffey, age 75, of Beale Court Drive in Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2004 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mr. Mahaffey was born on July 9, 1928 in Union County, the son of the late Plomar Carlton Mahaffey and Lannie Victoria Self Mahaffey.  Before his retirement he was employed as a food program specialist with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture.  He was a veteran of the Korean War in the U.S. Army.  He was preceded in death by a sister, June Trulove in 1980 and a brother, Bill Mahaffey in 1994.  Mr. Mahaffey was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Union County.

Surviving Mr. Mahaffey is his Mother, Lannie Mahaffey of Blairsville; one brother, Don Mahaffey of Blairsville; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Monday, February 16, 2004 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelly Trio.  Interment followed in the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting military honors.

If you wish to make a memorial donation the family requests that it be made to the Philadelphia Baptist Church Cemetery Fund in Mr. Mahaffey’s memory.

regina ann ledford

 

Miss Regina Ann Ledford, age 19, of River Road in Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004 in Fannin County from injuries received in an automobile accident.  Miss Ledford was born on November 9, 1984 in Union County, the daughter of James Randall Ledford and Rachelle V. Bowen Ledford.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  Miss Ledford was employed with the Union County Nursing Home as a CAN.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Miss Ledford are her parents, Randy (R.L.) and Rachelle Ledford of Blairsville; fiancé, Jason Totherow of Blairsville; two brothers, Randy and Jimmy Ledford; one sister, Christie Ledford; grandmother, Phyllis Ledford of Akron, OH; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2004 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Hughes and Rev. Tony Roberson officiating.  Special music will be presented by Sam Ensley.  The following gentlemen will serve as Pallbearers, Shane Murphy, Kenny Payne, Jeffrey Carroll, Marty Johnson, Scott Payne and Jonathan Lloyd.  Interment will follow in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
