phillip “tommy” thomas abernathy
Mr.
Phillip Thomas (better known as Tommy) Abernathy, age 22, of Carney
lane,
Blairsville passed away on Sunday, February 10, 2008 in Lumpkin County
from
injuries received from an automobile accident.
Tommy was born on July 29, 1985 in Fannin County, the son of
Phillip Robert
Abernathy and Kathy Denise Atkins Abernathy.
He was a native and lifelong
resident of Union
County and graduated Union County high School Class of 2004. He was currently attending Gainesville State
College. He was preceded in death by his
grandmother, Carolyn Atkins in 1993.
Tommy was a member of New Union Baptist Church and was attending
Lebanon
Baptist Church in Epworth, GA.
Surviving
Tommy are his parents, Phillip and Kathy Abernathy of Blairsville, his
fiancée,
Miranda Rymer of Blue Ridge; two sisters and brothers-in-law, mar and
Trenniss
Elliott of Blairsville, Laura and David Pirkle of Blairsville;
grandparents,
Bill and Pat Abernathy and Ralph Atkins; nephews, Colby and Cameron
Elliott,
Aden Pirkle; many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Wednesday, February 13, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the
funeral
home chapel with the Rev. Harrison Bradley and Rev. David McLendon
officiating. Special music was presented
by Jeanette
Garrett and members from New Union Baptist Church and Lebanon Baptist
Church
Choirs. Serving as pallbearers were
Anthony Rymer, Caleb Marchent, Cody Carroll, Jeff Duke, Brent and Evan
Abernathy, Brandon Brown and Tommy Shook.

Mrs.
JoAnn Lewis, age 70 of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, February
16, 2008
at Union General Hospital. JoAnn was
born Thursday, February 3, 1938 in Towns County, GA to the late Harve
Jennings
Caldwell and the late Odena Lee Caldwell.
She was a member of Zion United Methodist church, the Eastern
Star and
had worked for Union County Library. She
was preceded in death by sister, Jean Farmer.
Survivors
include: husband, Doug Lewis of Blairsville, GA; son &
daughter-in-law,
William and Sandra Watson of Hiawassee, GA; daughter & son-in-law,
Lynette
and David Roebuck of Columbia, MO; step-son Richard M. Lynch, Jr. of
Macon, GA;
sisters, Margaret Jones of Hayesville, NC and Marjorie Mullis of
Jefferson, GA;
grandchildren, Jessica, Dylan and Adam Roebuck, Andrew and Johnathan
Watson;
several nieces and nephews.
Memorial
services were held Monday, February 18, 2008 at 7 p.m. from the Cochran
Funeral
Home chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating. Music
was provided by, Sam Ensley. Graveside
services were at 4:30 p.m. Monday,
February 18, at Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Vikki
McVay

Miss
Robbie Lynne Beavers, age 49, of Carson lane Murphy, NC passed away on
Saturday, February 16, 2008 in the Union General Hospital following an
extended
illness. Miss Beavers was born on June
7, 1958 in Murphy, NC, the daughter of the late Evelyn Tanner Beavers
and
Robert Beavers. She was preceded in
death by her mother, Evelyn Beavers in 2003.
Miss Beavers was a member of Old Fashion Baptist church.
Surviving Miss Beavers are her father, Robert Beavers
of Murphy; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Alwayne Beavers
of Blairsville,
Keith and Janette Beavers of Culberson; three sisters and
brothers-in-law,
Audrey and Stanley Raxter of Murphy, Kim and Steve Wilson of Brasstown,
Krystal
and Eddie West of Murphy; many nieces, nephews and many other relatives
and
friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, February 18, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the
funeral home
chapel with the Rev. Chris Matheson and Rev. Paul Ray Morgan. Special music was presented by Maria
Dobbs. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers, Zack and Thomas Beavers, Ben and Mark Wilson, Jason
Phillips and
Johnny Beavers. Serving as honorary
pallbearers were Jaron Beavers, Eric West and Mark Lovingood. Interment followed in the Bellview Community

Deyton, age 72 of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Dahlonega, passed away
Saturday,
February 16, 2008. Henry was born
Wednesday, February 5, 1936 in Union County, GA to the lat John W.
Deyton and
the late Maggie Rurie Self Deyton. He
was a member of Liberty Baptist Church and was preceded in death by
wife, Ellen
Joyce Deyton, sons, Michael and Larry Deyton, sister, alma
Panter and brother, David Deyton.

Mr.
Stanley Jack Garland, Sr., age 58, of Hoyle King Rd., Blairsville
passed away
on Monday. February 11, 2008 at his home following
a brief
illness. Mr. Garland was born on
September 26, 1949 in Union County the son of Grace Bridges garland and
the
late Otis Garland. He was a native and
lifelong resident of Union County. He
was a veteran of the U.s. Army of the Vietnam War.
Stanley was preceded in death by his wife
Carolyn Porter Garland. Mr. Garland was
of the Baptist faith.
Surviving
Mr. Garland are his mother, Grace Elmore of Blairsville; one daughter
and
son-in-law, Angela and Jim Schwalm of Hayesville; one son, Stanley J.
Garland
Jr., of Blairsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Phyllis and H.B.
Smith of
Oxford, GA; one aunt, Doris (Mickey) Garland of Cleveland, GA; two
grandchildren, Riley and Tate Schwalm of Hayesville; several nieces,
nephews,
cousins and many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Thursday, February 14, 2008 at 11 a.m. from
Shining Light
Baptist Church with the Rev. John King officiating.
Special music was presented by H.B. Smith and
Rev. John King. The following gentlemen

Joyce
Mashburn Whetsell, age 89, of Goose Greek, SC, widow of David St. Clair
Whetsell, died Monday, February 11, 2008 in a local hospital. She was born October 3, 1927 in Blairsville,
GA, the daughter of the late Gurley William and Eula Imogene Hood
Mashburn. She retired from Manhatten
Shirt Factory and Levi Strauss, where she was employed as a Finishing
Supervisor. Mrs. Whetsell attended St.
Johns Bethel Baptist church and was a member of South Carolina WCBA.
Survivors
include 3 children, Larry J. Whetsell and his wife Tedi of Charleston,
Garry D.
Whetsell of N. Charleston and Tracey Whetsell Powers and her husband
Bruce of
Moncks Corner; 9 grandchildren: Alice “Laurie” Morris, James David
Whetsell,
Jonathan Russell Whetsell, Jeffery Allan Dickerson, Tiffany Ann
Whetsell, Garry
St. Clair Whetsell, Genevieve Doris Whetsell, Justin Todd Tumbleston
and David
Michael Powers; 7 great-grandchildren, Joshua Morris, Maryn Whetsell,
molly
Whetsell, Aubrey Whetsell, Sarah Whetsell, Nathan Kelly, Carolina
Dickerson and
numerous special friends and relatives.
Mrs. Whetsell was preceded in death by her siblings, Llowell
Mashburn,
Wendall Mashburn and Genevieve Mashburn Brewer.

family received friends at J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Northwood Chapel, Thursday, February 14, 2008 from 6 until 8 p.m. Funeral services were held at Stuhr’s
Northwoods Chapel, Friday, February 15, 2008 at 2 p.m.

Mrs.
Thelma Lou Morgan Bryson, age 89 of Blairsville, GA passed away on
Monday,
February 11, 2008 following a period of declining health.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr.
Willis Roy Bryson and a son, Mr. Keith Bryson in 1992.
She was born to the late Edward and Laura
Owensby Morgan on January 11, 1919 in Oglethorpe County, GA.
She
is survived by a son, Mr. Kenneth Roy Bryson, of Cumming, GA; sisters,
Hazel
DeLong, of Gainesville, GA and Ruby Peach, of Baltimore, MD; two
grandchildren
and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

services were held on Friday, February 15, 2008 at 11 a.m. from the

Mrs.
Edna May Cross, age 89, of Wiley Rd., Blairsville, GA, formerly of
Woodbourne,
NY, passed away on Friday, February 15, 2008 in the Union County
Nursing Home
following an extended illness. Mrs.
Cross was born on March 28, 1918 in S. Fallsburg, NY, the daughter of
the late
Andrew Gibson and the late Eva Monroe Gibson.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother
and
will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Mrs. Cross was a member of the First United
Methodist church of Union County in
Blairsville.
Surviving
Mrs. Cross are her loving husband of sixty-eight years, Bill Cross of
Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Edward Wiley of
Blairsville; one sister, Jennie Kracht of Middletown, NY; two
grandchildren,
John and Christopher Wiley; one great-grandchild, Olivia Wiley; several
nieces,
nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.
A
memorial service was held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 2 p.m. at
the
Blairsville First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ben Lewis
officiating. Special music was presented
by Dr. Keith DeFoor and Jeff Bauman. In
lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be
made to
the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Cross’s memory.

services at the Church.
