onzell pitts pruitt

One of the most beloved ladies and loving ladies of all time went to be with her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.  Mrs. Onzell Pitts Pruitt, age 81 and resident of Blairsville, GA, for more than 28 years, passed quietly into Glory after an extneded illness on February 12, 2007.  Jim Pruitt, her loving husband of more than 56 years, cared for Onzell at home until very recently when she was hospitalized and then was cared for at Union County Nursing Home until her death.  Her lifelong verse from God’s Word is found in Psalm 119:11: Thy Word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against Thee.

Mrs. Pruitt was born Wednesday, May 27, 1925, in Oglethorpe County, GA, to the late Onnie Pitts and Ruth Bell Pitts.  She worked briefly for the Georgia Department of Transportation and then dedicated the rest of her life to being a wonderful wife, beloved mother, and Christian friend to many folks.  Onzell was a breast cancer survivor since her surgery in 1970, a tremendous blessing from God for her family.  She served on the Benevolence Committee and Leadership Team of the retirement Ministry as a member of Faith Baptist Church as well as being a Pink Lady at Union General Hospital.

Even though Mrs. Pruitt was a quiet and sometimes timid person, she was full of joy and happiness which was expressed through the music she played and sang almost all her life.  This is a wonderful part of the heritage that she has passed on to her children and grandchildren.  Onzell, better known as Grandmama Pruitt, always had a keen interest in her children and grandchildren’s lives, supporting their varied endeavors.  Keeping up with nine grandchildren living in three different locations is not an easy task but Grandmama visited, wrote cards and letters, and prayed for each one on a regular basis.  She hated flying on any size of airplane but that did not stop her from flying out West or even to the heart of South America to see her family.  She did not complain but gladly sacrificed those years of separation so that part of her family could be missionaries of the Gospel many thousands of miles away from Blairsville.

She was preceded in death by brother, Elmer Pitts; sisters, Frances Elizabeth Pitts and Jannie Lou Carlisle.  Survivors include husband, Jim Pruitt of Blairsville, GA; son, Dr. Jim Pruitt, III and Betsy Carpino of Pagosa Springs, CO; daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Rev. Ric Hurd of Blairsville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Bruce and Melanie Pruitt of Watkinsville, GA; brother and sister-in-law,, John Mel and Claudia Pitts of Elberton, GA; brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Betty Ann Pitts of Stone Mountain, GA; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and many other family members and friends.  We will sorely miss you and your happy smile.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 16, 2007, at 2 p.m. from the Faith Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Helms, Rev. Ric Hurt and Rev. Joseph Hutcheson officiating.  Music was provided by Antioch Trio from Watkinsville, GA, soloist Sara Hutcheson, and pianist Judson Hurd.  Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens.  The family received friends at Cochran Funeral
