MR. gerald thomas “jack” roper

 

Mr. Gerald Thomas “Jack” Roper, age 58, of Suches, GA, died Sunday, February 13, 2000 at the Union General Hospital in Blairsville, GA following an extended illness.

Mr. Roper was a native of Cherokee County, GA who had lived in Union County for 35 years.  He was a retired truck driver, US Navy veteran, and was of the Baptist faith.

He was preceded in death by his father A.J. Roper.  He is survived by his wife, Angie Woody Roper, Suches, GA; mother, Mrs. Edna Roper, Jasper, GA; daughters and son-in-laws – Sheila and James Turner, Suches, GA; Becky and Jerry Johnson, Jasper, GA; LueAnn and Don Hammontree, Jasper, GA; Virginia Monroe, Hampton, GA; son and daughter-in-law; Tommy and Tina Roper, Dahlonega, GA; brother: Billy Roper, Jasper, GA; sisters and brother-in-laws: Joan and Lee Woody, Suches, GA; Debbie and Pat Childers, Jasper, GA; Shirley Hitt, Dahlonega, GA; Judy Roper, Jasper, GA; Barbara Garrett, Savannah, GA; 11 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega with Reverence George McKinzey officiating.  Interment followed in the Woody Cemetery in Suches.

MR. j.p. payne

 

Mr. J.P. Payne, age 72, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2000 in Union County, GA.

Mr. Payne was born on Tuesday, December 27, 1937, a son of the late Ed Payne, and Emma Harkins Payne.  He was a retired security officer, and a lifelong resident of this area.  Mr. Payne was a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114 F&AM.  A grandson, Brent Grizzle, passed away in 1998.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law: Jerry and Dean Payne of Waleska, GA; Glenn and Elizabeth Payne of Blairsville; daughter, Doris Grizzle of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Janie and Ronnie Dyer of Blairsville, and daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and David Williams of Rossville, GA; sisters: Mattie Plott, Bertha Garner, Grapelle Rich, and Mary Hensley, all of Blairsville Martha Hawkins of Winder, GA; Bessie Gilreath of Suches, GA; and Nora Evans of Douglasville, GA; brothers: Hobert and Willie Payne of Blairsville; 8 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 16, 2000 at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Reverend Willis Garrett officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Roy Johnson, Billy Payne, T.J. Plott, David Dyer, Shane Payne, and Brad Rich.  Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of arrangements.

MR. robert hoyt stephens

 

Mr. Robert Hoyt Stephens, age 48, of Tate, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 following a brief illness.  Mr. Stephens was born on June 14, 1951 in Union County, the son of Mac Stephens and Reida Warren Stephens.  MR. Stephens was a Union County native and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Ellijay.

Survivors include his loving wife, Diana Huggins Stephens of Tate, GA; three sons, Elijah Hoyt Stephens, Nathanael Robert Stephens, Joel Emmanuel Stephens, all of Tate, GA; parents Mac and Reida Stephens of Blairsville; sister, Shirley Dyer of Blairsville; sister and brother-in-law Sharon and Sammy Owenby of Dahlonega, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, February 18, 2000 at 2 pm from the funeral home chapel with President Jay Hanks, Bishop David Ashwoth, Speaker Tony Stanley and the Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.  A tribute to Hoyt was given by his sisters, Shirley Dyer and Sharon Owenby.  Special music was presented by Jim Kennersley, Gloria Griggs and Kenneth Young and Brenda Ashworth.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Elijah Hoyt Stephens, Nathanael Robert Stephens, Joe Emmanuel Stephens, Sammy Owenby, Craig Dyer, and Wesley Owenby.  Interment followed in the Union memory Gardens.

MRs. addie kate rogers

 

Mr. Addie Kate Rogers, age 71, of Jones Creek Road, Blairsville passed away on February 14. 2000 in the St. Josephs Hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.  Mrs. Rogers was born on June 11, 1928, the daughter of the late Floyd Davenport and the late Von Brown Davenport.  She was a lifelong resident of Union County and a member of Confidence Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by two sons, Darrell Rogers in 1981 and Marty C. Rogers.

Survivors include her loving husband, H.A. Rogers of Blairsville; daughters and son-in-laws, Jolene and Bobby Bright of Blairsville, Linda and Larry Holbrook of Blairsville; daughter Kathy Burrell of Blairsville; one son Farrell Rogers of Blairsville; one sister Thelma Crowe of Habersham County; five grandchildren, Bobby Joe Bright, Penny Tanner, Kim Nix, Dustin and Kevin Rogers, all of Blairsville; two great grandchildren, Josh Bright and Kolbe Nix both of Blairsville, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 at 2 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Vernon Davenport and the Rev. Woffard Kelley officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Milton Akins, James Burrell, Terry Burrell, Ricky Tanner, Bud Burrell, and Gary Edwards.  Interment followed in the Liberty Hill Church Cemetery.

mrs. nina woody

 

Mrs. Nina Woody, of 3392 State Hwy. 60, Suches, Georgia, passed away Thursday, February 17, 2000 at the Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega, Georgia following an extended illness.

Mrs. Woody was a native and lifelong resident of Union County, a homemaker, and a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Suches.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter W. Woody.

She is survived by sons and daughter in law: Bill Woody, of Suches, Georgia; Arthur and Eileen Wood, of Suches, Georgia.  Two grandchildren and several other relatives also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2000 at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church with Rev. John Fullington, Rev. Malcolm Chapman and George Burch officiating.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

MR. leon deyton

 

Mr. Leon Deyton, age 72, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2000, at his home, following an extended illness.

Mr. Deyton was born in Union County, Georgia on Tuesday, May 31, 1927, a son of the late Mack and Sudie Deyton.  He was a lifelong resident of this area and was a farmer.  Me. Deyton was a member of Fairview Baptist Church.  Mr. Deyton was born and passed away at the old Deyton homeplace in Blairsville.

Survivors include his wife, Viola Walden Deyton, of Blairsville; daughter and son in law: Wanda and Quinton Holbrooks, of Blairsville; son and daughter in law, Michael and Sharon Deyton, of Morganton, GA; son and daughter in law, Jackie and Deborah Barron Deyton, of Canton, GA; son and daughter in law, Tony and Sonya Deyton, and daughter and son in law, Lisa and Junior Graham, all of Blairsville; sisters, Mary Ramey, Flora Lee and Myrtle Evans, all of Blairsville and Bernie Deyton, both of Blairsville, thirteen grandchildren also survive along with many friends and other relatives.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Ray Potts and Rev. Ronnie Abernathy officiating.  Special music was presented by the New Life Singers and Susan Jones.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ricky Walden, Kenneth Deyton, Dennis Deyton, Larry Deyton, Shannon Queen, and John Bennett.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Michael Coker, Frankie Duckworth, Charles Deyton, and Troy Duckworth, Jr.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

MRs. mary lou swain jackson

 

Mrs. Mary Lou Swain Jackson, age 82, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2000, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Jackson was born in Union County, Georgia, on Friday, July 20, 1917, a daughter of the late Norm Swain, and Bell Allison Swain.  She moved away for many years to follow work, and moved back to this area in 1974.  She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Union County.

Survivors include her husband, George C. Jackson, of Blairsville; son and daughter in law, Walter and Wilma Jackson, of China, and Harold Jackson, of Illinois; four grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

Funeral services were held Saturday, February 19, 2000 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Eddie Herring officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Robert Rogers, David Hancock, Hoyt Hamby, Loy Hamby, Ferrell Penland, and Clyde Collins.  Interment was in Choestoe Cemetery in Blairsville.
