mr. thomas j. “tom” mcney

 

Mr. Thomas J. “Tom” McNey, age 73, of 3307 State Highway 60, Suches, GA, died Sunday, February 17, 2002, at the VA Medical Center in Decatur, GA, following a period of declining health.

Born January 9, 1929 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late James Anthony and Helen Elizabeth Comiskey McNey.  Mr. McNey had lived in Suches, GA since 1973.  Mr. McNey had retired from the US Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel, after 21 years of service, had medically retired after 13 years as a Teacher with the Lumpkin County School System in 1986 and was a member of the Mt. Lebanan Baptist Church in Suches, GA.

Survivors include: his wife of 42 years: Mrs. Miriam Jean McNey, of Suches, GA; daughter: Mrs. Lisa Erwin, of Shelbyville, KY; son: John T. McNey, of Jonesboro, GA; grandchildren: John Lawrence McNey, Tristan Erwin and Anna Erwin.

Graveside services were 11 a.m., Tuesday, February 26, 2002, from the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA, with full military honors.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the charity of their choice.

Miss Grace France Payne, age 88, of Austell, formerly of Blairsville, died Sunday, February 17, 2002.

There are no immediate survivors.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, February 23, 2002, 12 noon, at Sharp Memorial Methodist Church in Young Harris.  Rev. Patty Rayle Clay officiating. 

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Presbyterian Church, 201 Washington St. S.W., Atlanta, GA, 30303, or to Sharp Memorial Methodist Church, Young Harris, GA, 30514.

mrs. minnie ledford barnes

 

Mrs. Minnie Ledford Barnes, age 87, of Gumlog Road, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2002 in the Union county Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Barnes was born on March 21, 1914 in Union County, the daughter of the late James Latt Ledford and the late Elizabeth Henderson Ledford.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by a son, Kelley H. Barnes in 1942.

Surviving Mrs. Barnes are her loving husband, Homer Allen Barnes, of Blairsville; four daughters and son-in-laws, Betty and Edward Sexton of Blairsville, Lucille and Johnny Martin of Blairsville, Revonda and Roy Phillips of Blairsville, Vivian and Ervin Martin of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Rachel Barnes of Blairsville; ten grandchildren, three great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 23, 2002 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Horace Potts and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by Jack Cochran and Becky Rogers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Clifton, Hoyt, Marvin, David, Chris and Byron Barnes.  Interment followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

mrs. susie beacham swartz

 

Mrs. Susie Beacham Swartz, age 87, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, February 21, 2002 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Swartz was born in Union County, Georgia, on Friday, January 29, 1915, a daughter of the late Chester Ward Beacham and Bessie Erwin Beacham.  She remained a lifelong resident of this area and was employed for 31 years as a teacher in the Union County School System.  Mrs. Swartz was a member of Blairsville Church of the Nazarene.  In 1992, her husband, Ed Swartz, passed away.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Jean Swartz, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and John Repp, also of Blairsville; two brothers, Hal and Jim Beacham, both of Blairsville; two sisters, Martha Burtz, of Gainesville, Georgia, and Mary Ball of Marietta, Georgia; grandchildren and their spouses, Cheri and Mike Parker, Tim Swartz, Toby and Page Swartz, Travis and Gena Swartz, and Tilden Repp; great grandchildren, Brittany Swartz, Brooklyn Swartz, Tyler Swartz, Dakota Parker and Daylee Parker, twelve nieces and nephews also survive, along with many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 24, 2002 at 2 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Tom Rash, Rev. Wolford Kelley and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Mrs. Swartz’ grandson, Tilden Repp, gave the eulogy.  Special music was presented by Tom and Gail Rash, Shirley Grizzle, Jo Chapman, Sarah Kelley, with an instrumental by French Trogden.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Doug Colwell, Joel Miller, David Miller, Ivan Phillips, Tim Swartz, Toby Swartz, Travis Swartz, and Gary George.  Honorary pallbearers were Tommy Stephens, Bill Parker, Jack Parker, Earl Odom, Terry Rogers, Dr. George Gowder, Dr. Mike Gowder, Dr. James L. Heaton, Leon Davenport, Dr. Don Pruitt, J.W. Payne, Lamar Paris, and Jerry Hemphill.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

mr. j. b. stanley

 

Mr. J.B. Stanley, age 85, of Twin Brook Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Stanley was born on December 12, 1916 in Carrol County, Tennessee, the son of the late William Robert Stanley, Sr. and the late Myrtle Hunt Stanley.  He was an Insurance Salesman in N.E. and N.W. Arkansas for twenty four years and then retired as a Postal Clerk in North Oaks, CA with seventeen years of service.  He was a WWII veteran of the US Army and was a member of the Blairsville Church of Christ.  Mr. Stanley was preceded in death by two brothers, William Robert Stanley, Jr. and Ernest Stanley.

Surviving Mr. Stanley are his loving wife of sixty two years, Claudia Wanda Sanders Stanley of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Don and Carol Stanley of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Woodie Rains of Bartlesville, OK; two sisters, Ora Mae Van Winkle and Virginia McCoy; two brothers, Paul Stanley and Albert Stanley, all of Jonesboro, GA; three grandchildren, Dana Stanley, Kristina and Chase Harris, Steve and Julie Stanley, several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 23, 2002 at 11 am from the Blairsville Church of Christ with Minister Terry Stewart officiating.  Special music was presented by Jim Stanley.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Chuck Hartnett, Neil Kelly, Woodie Rains, Pat Akins, Steve Stanley, Glenn Stanley, Jim McCarty, Tom Colwell and Curtis Colwell.  Interment followed in the Stanley Church Cemetery.

ann head

 

Ann Head, age 73, of Cumming, GA, and formerly of Suches, GA, died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at the North Fulton Regional Medical Center following an extended illness.

Ms. Head was a native of Fannin County and former longtime resident of Suches, GA, who had lived in Cummings, GA for the past 5 months.  She was retired from the Burlington Pinetree Plant in Dahlonega and was of the Baptist faith.

She was the daughter of the late Nathaniel T. and Amanda Kincaid Petty and was also preceded in death by her sister, Dot Holloway.

She is survived by daughter and son-in-law: Helen and Ronald Grizzle, Cumming, GA; sons and daughter-in-law: Clyde Head, Cumming, GA, Gary and Debbie Head, Dahlonega, GA; grandchildren: Tracy R. Grizzle, Brian L. Grizzle, DeAnna Grizzle Lynn, Lisa Ann Head Phillips, Stephen Christopher Head, Candace N. Head, Cadea E. Head; great grandchildren: Kayla E. Grizzle, Ashlyn T. Grizzle, Matthew L. Grizzle; sisters: Bertha Harkins, Suches, GA and Genever Matthews, Lilburn, GA.  Several other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were 2 p.m., February 23, 2002, at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Ken Anderson and Rev. Terry Fields officiating.  Interment was in the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church cemetery in Suches.
