Mr.
Willard Gudger Stroud, age 91, of Stroud Gregory Drive, Blairsville
passed away
on Monday, February 18, 2008 in the Chatuge Regional Nursing Home
following an
extended illness. Mr. Stroud was
born
on May 13, 1916 in Union County, the son of the late Mart Stroud and
the late Ollie
Smith Stroud. He was a native and
lifelong resident of Union County. He was preceded in death by his wife of
sixty-nine years, Hazel Stroud; brothers, Wiley, Wade and James Worth Stroud; sister, Ada Sanders and a
brother-in-law, Zeb
Martin. Mr. Stroud was a member of
Ebenezer Baptist Church.
Surviving
Mr. Stroud are two sisters and one brother-in-law, Louise Martin of
Blairsville, Mabel and Sam Friedman of Irvine, CA; one brother and
sister-in-law, John and Pattie Stroud of Loudon, TN; several nieces,
nephews,
and many other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the
funeral
home chapel with the Rev. Guy Wayne Shook officiating.
Special music was presented by the Renshaw
Family. The following gentlemen served
as pallbearers, Paul Stroud, Jeff Fortenberry, Perry Branyon, Edward
Mashburn,
Derek Richards and Dustin Lee. Interment
followed in the Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery. The
family met with friends at the funeral
home on Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m.

Mr.
Edward Alfred White, age 89, of Spiva Cove Rd., Blairsville passed away
on Monday,
February 18, 2008 at the home of his grandson following an extended
illness. Mr. White was born on February
26, 1918 in
Cleveland, GA, the son of the late Jesse White and the late Bessie
Rogers
White. Ed loved hunting, fishing and the
great outdoors. He was preceded in death
by his wife, Hazel White in 2002, and by three sons, Gary White in
1997, Bud
White in 1984 and Darrell White in 1962.
Mr. White was a member of the Blairsville Church of Christ.
Surviving
Mr. White are one brother, Frank White of Hawaii; four grandchildren,
Trace and
Cindy White of Blairsville, Tammy White of Ft. Collins, CO, Vance White
of
Lander, WY and Eric White of Ft. Collins, CO; nine great-grandchildren,
eight
great-great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also
survive.
Services
for Mr. White were held on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 2 p.m., from
the
Blairsville Church of Christ with Minister Terry Stuart officiating. Interment followed in the Union Baptist
Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if
you wish, the family requests that memorials be made to the Blairsville
Church
of Christ Youth Fund in Mr. White’s memory.
The family met with friends at the funeral home on Thursday
evening from
6-9 p.m.

Mrs.
Eunice Ketchum Shima, age 88, of Reece Creek Rd., Blairsville passed
away on
Friday, February 22, 2008 in the Union County Nursing Home following an
extended illness. Mrs. Shima was born on
march 10, 1919 in Hamilton, OH, the daughter
of the
late Benjamin Ketchum and the late Helena Yazell Kechum.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
John Shima in 1951 and also by a son, Joseph John Shima.
She had written poetry, symphonies and also
had played in symphonies. She was very
active in her church. Mrs. Shima was a
member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Surviving
Mrs. Shima are one daughter and son-in-law, Pauline (Polly) and Richard
Sobzack
of Blairsville; two brothers, Paul Ketchum of Hamilton, OH and Ben
Ketchum of
Cleveland, OH; many other relatives and friends also survive.
A
memorial service was held on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at 3 p.m. from
the
Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses Church with Wayne Visage
officiating. In lieu of flowers, if you
wish, the family
requests that memorials may be made to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s
Witnesses
Church in Mrs. Shima’s memory.

Mrs.
Lula Beck Nichols, age 93, of Blairsville formerly of Atlanta, passed
away on
Friday, February 22, 2008 in Union General Hospital following a brief
illness. Mrs. Nichols was born on July 1,
1914 in
Lindel, GA, the daughter of the late William Oscar Johnson and the late
Ida
Rose Johnson. She retired from Fulton
Cotton Mills in 1960 after twenty years of service.
She was preceded in death by her husband,
Hamon Leander Beck in 1968. Mrs. Beck
was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving
Mrs. Nichols are one daughter, Shirley Groover of Atlanta; two sons,
William L.
Beck of Atlanta and Willis Howard Beck of Warrenton, GA; two sisters,
Ida Smith
of Morrow, GA and Florence Wilkerson of Medesta, CA; eight
grandchildren; ten
great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives
and
friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Monday, February 25, 2008 at 2 p.m. from the
Holly
Springs Baptist Church in Rockmart, GA with the Rev. Billy Hitchcock
officiating. The following gentlemen
served as pallbearers, Van and Kyle Whitfield, Johnny Beck, mark and
Bobby
Groover and Dan Phillips. Serving as
honorary pallbearers were David Smith and Phillip Smith.
Interment followed in the Holly Springs
Baptist Church Cemetery. The family met
with friends at the church from 1-2 p.m. on Monday.

Nell
Montgomery passed away January 21, 2008 while a resident of Covenant
Village in
Plantation, FL. Mrs. Montgomery, born
August 29, 1922 in Anderson, SC had previously been a summer resident
of
Blairsville. IN 1990 she was predeceased
by her loving husband of 32 years, Ralph Montgomery.
Nell and Ralph first began spending their
summers in Blairsville in 1982 and enjoyed many happy times together
here. After Ralph’s passing, Nell
continued
spending her summers here enjoying tending to her home, yard and flower
garden. In 2002 Nell was predeceased by
her loving daughter, Pat Sanders.
She
is survived by daughter, Ann Rhodes and husband, Robert; son-in-law
Robert
Sanders; stepson, Ralph Montgomery, Jr. and wife Eileen; nine loving
grandchildren, Debbie Brandt, Patricia Lossow, Robyn Carroll, Kristin
Rhodes,
Melissa Griffin, Ralph Montgomery III, Tricia Montgomery, Angela
Montgomery,
Robert Montgomery Jr; fourteen great-grandchildren and four
great-great-grandchildren; niece, Annette Tollison of Anderson, SC and
nephew,
Larry Simmons of Walterboro, SC.
A
memorial service is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2008 at
Cochran
Funeral Home, 177 Rice Street, Hiawassee, GA.

Mr.
Timmothy Ray Derreberry age 24, of Andrews, NC, formerly of Blairsville
passed
away on Friday, February 15, 2008 at his home.
Timmy was born on September 25, 1983 in Andrews, NC, the son of
Billy
Derreberry and Carleen Falls Derreberry.
Timmy loved hunting, fishing, camping and being outdoors. He will be missed by his family and all who
knew him.
Surviving
Timmy are his wife, Amanda Waters Derreberry of Murphy; one son, Noah
Derreberry of Blue Ridge; mother and step-father, Carleen and J.C.
Totherow of
Blairsville; father and step-mother, Billy and Denise Derreberry of
Andrews;
one sister, Jennifer Derreberry of Blairsville; two brothers, Shane
Derreberry
of Blairsville, Kyle Derreberry of Andrews; grandmother, Clara DeFoor;
grandfather, Dent DeFoor, both of Ellijay; many other relatives and
friends
also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Wednesday, February 20, 2008 from the funeral
home chapel
with the Rev. Clara DeFoor and Rev. B.J. Adams officiating. Special music was presented by B.J.
Adams. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers, Shane, Robert and Dean Derreberry, Dent DeFoor, Larry and
Matt Sowell. Interment followed in the
Henderson Family
Cemetery. The family
