Mrs. Marian Elizabeth Wagner, age 78, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away on Monday, February 21, 2000 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Wagner was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Monday, July 4, 1921, a daughter of the late Roy Dahis and Ella Amanda Kelley Dahis.  She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during World War II.  Mrs. Wagner had been employed as a secretary.

Survivors include her husband, Lawrence Wagner of Blairsville.

mrs. wanda brierton

 

Mrs. Wanda Brierton, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of San Diego, CA. passed away Monday, February 21, 2000 at her home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Brierton was born in Greer, Oklahoma, on Wednesday, March 7, 1923, a daughter of the late John Thomas Lovelace and Velma Barker Lovelace.  She had been living in the Blairsville area since December, 1999, coming here from San Diego.  Mrs. Brierton was a member of University Christian Church in San Diego, where she had been very active in Outreach and numerous committees.  She was an avid bridge player.  Mrs. Brierton had a career with Sears, Roebuck Company in middle management that spanned 20 years.  She changed careers in 1971, graduating as a paralegal with honors from the University of San Diego.  Mrs. Brierton was loved and very much respected by all who knew her.  

Survivors include her daughter and son in law: Linda and Hugh Gwynn, of Blairsville, and sons: James, John and Steven Brierton, all of San Diego, other relatives also survive.

Memorials services will be held Tuesday, March 7th, at 4 p.m. from University Christian Church in San Diego.  If you wish, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

mrs. lydia dyer hood

 

Mrs. Lydia Dyer Hood, age 84, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, February 25, 2000 in Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Mrs. Hood was born in Union County, Georgia on Friday, August 13, 1915, a daughter of the late Samuel Riley Dyer and Sarah Reid Dyer.  She was a lifelong resident of this area, and was a homemaker.  Mrs. Hood was a member of Union Baptist Church.  She had been preceded in death by a grandson, Lonnie Miler.

Survivors include her husband, Homer J. Hood of Blairsville; daughter, Doris Miller of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, June and W.D. Davis, also of Blairsville; brothers: Woodrow and Sam Dyer, both of Blairsville; grandchildren: Sheila Miller, Audrey Lovell, Katherine Davis and Gina Thompson; great grandchildren: Landon Lovell, Jessica Miller, Kalen and Ashley Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 27, 2000 at 3 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Benny Nix officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Junior Lovell, Larry Dyer, Ricky Dyer, R.M. Dyer, Royce Dyer, and Cret Dyer.  Interment was in Union Baptist Church Cemetery.

MR. paul nicholson

 

Mr. Paul Nicholson, age 87, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, February 23, 2000 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville following an extended illness.

Mr. Nicholson was born in Union County, Georgia, on Monday, August 4, 1912, a son of the late John Edgar Nicholson and Hulda Savannah Davenport Nicholson.  He was retired from the Tennessee Copper Company, where he had been employed as a laboratory technician.  Mr. Nicholson was a lifelong resident of this area , and was member of Bethlehem Baptist Church, and also of Youngcane Masonic Lodge.  He had been preceded in death by a daughter, Laveta “Bobbye” Rogers in 1981.

Survivors include his wife, Geneva Rich Nicholson, of the home; two daughters: Doris Collins, of Marietta, and Kathy Walton, of Murphy, NC, a sister, Johnnie Nicholson, of Blairsville; seven grandchildren: Kourtney Smart, Brittany Walton, Paul Walton, Terri Norman, Lisa Dean, Craig Rogers and Phillip Rogers, eleven great grand-children also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, February 25, 2000 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Ray Potts, and Rev. Vernon Davenport officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Rex Odom, Fred Roberts, Hoyt Cunningham, David Cox, Tony Dinatale, and Steve Kimsey.  Serving as honorary escort to the family was Earl Odom.  Interment was in Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery.

MR. roger wayne berry

 

Mr. Roger Wayne Berry, age 65, of 11809 Gaddistown Road, Suches, Georgia, died Thursday, February 24, 2000 at his residence, following an extended illness.

A Vanita, Oklahoma native and former resident of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Mr. Berry had lived in Suches, Georgia for the past 6 years.  Mr. Berry was a production supervisor with Ampex Corporation, retiring with 20 years of service and was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include: his wife of 40 years, Mrs. Jane McDougald Berry of Suches, GA; three sons, Steven W. Berry of Denver, CO, Christopher R. Berry of Suches, GA, Stacey W. Berry of Denver, CO; brother and sister-in-law, Danny and Marcia Berry of Greeley, CO; niece, Megan Berry of Greeley, CO; aunts and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2:30 pm Sunday, February 27, 2000 from the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church #2 “The Hill Church” in Suches, Georgia, with the remains placed in state at the church at 2 pm.  The Rev. Clarence Tritt, Rev. Donald Tritt, and Rev. Everett Thompson officiated with the interment following in the church cemetery.

ruth osterhout hood

 

Graveside memorial services were held Thursday, February 24, 2000 for Ruth Osterhout Hood, 89, of Blairsville.  The Rev. Eddie Herring of Blairsville United Methodist Church officiated.  Grandson, Clint Hood, delivered the eulogy.  The body was cremated with remains buried at Flat Creek Church in Lakemont.

Born in Chicago, Illinois, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Dana and Isa Lloyd Osterhout.  Married to the late Dr. Carl M. Hood.  They lived in Blairsville and Gainesville following retirement.

Mrs. Hood was a graduate of Shorter College and employed by the State Board of Health.  For 30 years she worked with her husband, Dr. Hood as Dental Assistant in Decatur, Georgia.  She was a member of the Blairsville United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Joye Hood and Mack Spates of Lakemont; son and daughter-in-law, Carl and Anne Hood of Midville; seven grandchildren, Sheri Spates Slappey of Atlanta, Sheli Spates Jones of Gainesville, Clint Hood of Louisville, Chip Hood of Gainesville, Chris Hood of Wadley, Clay Hood of Wadley, and Suzanne Hood of Statesboro.
