Theodore John Kojak

 

Mr. Theodore John Kojak age 69 of Tanyard Street, Blairsville passed away on Sunday February 29, 2004 in the Blue Ridge Health Care following an extended illness.  Mr. Kojak was born on January 22, 1935 in Long Island, NY., the son of the late Alexander Kojak and the late Natalie Barwicke Kojak.  Mr. Kojak had worked with the US Forest Service and was a automobile mechanic by trade.  He had made his home in Blairsville since 1985 moving here from Ft. Pierce, FL.  Mr. Kojak was of the Catholic Faith.

Surviving Mr. Kojak are his daughter, Penny Kojak of Macon, GA., one brother and sister in law, Alexander and Dee Kojak of Succasunna, NJ., several nieces, and nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held on Tuesday March 2, 2004 at 2 p.m. from the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to United Hospice of Blue Ridge in Mr. Kojak’s memory.

John joshua sawyer, jr.

 

Mr. John Joshua Sawyer, Jr., of Highland Trace in Blairsville, Georgia passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2004 in the Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Sawyer was born on July 3, 1916 in Burlington, VT., the son of the late John J. Sawyer, Sr., and the late Belle Breen Sawyer.  He was raised in Northfield, VT., and graduated from the Norwich University in 1938.  He was in the Credit business for many years in Maine and CT.  John returned to Northfield in 1973 and became the Director of Alumni at Norwich University; later he became the Executive Director of the Guardianship Trust of Vermont.  A veteran of the U.S. Army Calvary in WWII, Mr. Sawyer was a member of the VFW in Port Orange, FL., and also was a member of the Newberg Congregational Church.

After retirement, he moved to Hupper’s Island, off the coast of Port Clyde, ME., where he lived for twelve great years.  He has been a resident of Blairsville for the past 10 years.

Surviving Mr. Sawyer is his loving wife of forty three years, Catherine Timan Sawyer of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, John C. Sawyer of Weld Maine, Charles W. and Susan Sawyer of Marstons Mills, MS; five grandchildren, John, Sherry, Katie, Brindy and Allison Sawyer; many cousins in Rochester, N.Y., and Waterbury, VT.

Memorial services will be held at a later date in Northfield, VT., and will be announced.

ruby arlene meador

 

Mrs. Ruby Arlene Meador, age 71, of Nottely Dam Road in Blairsville passed away on Monday, February 23, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Meador was born on March 6, 1932 in Hinton, W. VA., the daughter of the late A.Z. Harmon and the late Lila Tyree Harmon.  She and her husband had made their home in Blairsville for the past six years, after moving here from W. VA.  Mrs. Meador was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Meador is her loving husband of fifty five years, Delbert P. Meador of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Frank Mullen of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Nicole Meador of Blairsville; two sisters, Louise Bullard of Clay City, W. VA., Immogene Golden of Romeo, IL; two brothers and one sister-in-law, Charles Harmon of St. Pete, FL., Tommy and Zeta King of N.C; Two grandchildren, Patrick Mullen and Steven Meador; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Rod Johnson officiating.  Special music was presented by Pam Mullen.

doris jacqueline gayle

 

Mrs. Doris Jacqueline Gayle, age 72, of Walnut Springs Road in Blairsville, formerly of Suches, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2004 in the Union General Hospital, following a brief illness.  Mrs. Gayle was born on September 8, 1931 in Jacksonville, FL., the daughter of the late Lloyd Pearson and the late Alice Glisson Pearson.  She was a retired school teacher where she had taught in the Jacksonville, FL., and Gainesville, FL., school systems for several years.  Mrs. Gayle was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches.

Surviving Mrs. Gayle is her loving husband of fifty years, Frank Gayle of Blairsville; two sons, Howard Gayle of Cambell City, CA., Terry Gayle of Friday Harbor, WA; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services will be held at a later date and will be announced at that time.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to your favorite charity in Mrs. Gayle’s memory.

agnes ramelow karmgard

 

Mrs. Agnes Ramelow Karmgard, age 100, of Cook Mountain Drive in Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2004 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Karmgard was born on February 9, 1904 in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of the late Max Ramelow and the late Bertha Ramelow.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Nelson Karmgard and a daughter, Arlene Karmgard Kupferer.  Mrs. Karmgard attended The First Baptist Church of Blairsville.

Surviving Mrs. Karmgard is a son and daughter-in-law, Art and Linda Karmgard of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, February 29, 2004 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Paris officiating.  Special music was presented by Terry Hooper.  Interment followed in the Mount Emblem Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois.  The family requests that memorial donations be made to The First Baptist Church in Mrs. Karmgard’s memory.

mr. jeff franklin

 

Mr. Jeff Franklin, age 72, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, February 27, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Franklin was born in Fannin County, Georgia, on Wednesday, April 8, 1931, a son of the late Alfred Garfield Franklin and Lillie Payne Franklin.  Mr. Franklin was a native of this area, and moved to Utica, Michigan in 1950.  In 1993, he moved back to Blairsville.  He had worked as a die setter in the automobile manufacturing business.  Mr. Franklin was a member of New Union Baptist Church.  He had been preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Scott Franklin, in 1987, and a brother, James Franklin, in 1996.

Surviving are his wife, Shelby Dixon Franklin, of the home, son and daughter in law, Gary and Patricia Franklin, of Utica, Michigan; daughter and son in law, Teresa and Roger McClary of Harrison, Michigan; son, Ron Franklin, of Blairsville; daughter and son in law, Pam and Bruce Butler, of Freemont, California; daughter and son in law, Cheryl and Ray Linden, of Phoenix, Arizona; and son and daughter in law Tim and Kirsten Franklin, of Utica, Michigan; sister Marie Ford, of Blairsville; and brother, Eugene Franklin, also of Blairsville; twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive, along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 1, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Lester Sutton  officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelley Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tom Ford, Terry Franklin, Daniel Franklin, Vernon Patterson, Eric Siler, and Richard Cripps.  Burial was in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

mrs. ina ozell borne

 

Mrs. Ina Ozell Borne age 102 of Deaver Cove Road in Blairsville passed away on Sunday, February 29, 2004 at her home following a brief illness.  Mrs. Borne was born on March 20, 1901 in Knobnoster, MO., the daughter of the late Minor Joshua Goode and the late Priscilla Grace Baughman Goode.  Ina had lived in several states including California, Oklahoma, Michigan and Texas before moving to Georgia.  She was a homemaker and did excellent needlework up until her recent illness at 102.  She had lived in the Tulsa, OK area for over forty five years and was a member of the University Methodist Church in Tulsa.  She was preceded in death by her husband, J.A.B. (Ben) Borne in 1976.  Mrs. Borne was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Union County.

Surviving Mrs. Borne are a daughter and son in law, Benetta and David Cook of Blairsville, one sister Reta Michalkowsky of Cole Camp, MO., three grandchildren, Kathy Houser of Eagle River, AK., Karlie Saumier of Corinth, TX., Kristy Fritz of Bloomfield Hills, MI., twelve grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Graveside services were held on Friday, March 5, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Tulsa, OK.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Regency Hospice of N.E. Georgia in Mrs. Borne’s memory.

mr. horace hedgecock

 

Mr. Horace Hedgecock, age 68, of Maple Grove Road, Morganton, passed away Tuesday, February 24, 2004 at his home.  Born in Union County, Georgia, he was the son of the late John P. Hedgecock and Gertrude Beavers Hedgecock.  He was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Union County, was a United States Army veteran.  Mr. Hedgecock was a self-employed logger who enjoyed outdoor activities and was an avid hunter.  He was preceded in death by a son Billy Hedgecock.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Naomi Foster Hedgecock of the home; a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Sherry Hedgecock of Morganton; a daughter, Sally Lovell of Morganton; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Hedgecock of Morganton; brothers and sister-in-law, Laban and Iva Hedgecock of Blairsville, and Robert Hedgecock of Knoxville, TN; a sister, Shirley Lackey of Blairsville; grandchildren, Kaala Lovell, Jessie Lovell, Holly Hedgecock, Lucas Hedgecock, Ashley Hedgecock, Amber Hedgecock, and John Hedgecock; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, February 26, 2004 at 2 p.m. from Mt. Olivet Baptist Church with Rev. Larry Williams and Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.    Music was by Danny Davenport and Evan Hughes.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jeff Thomas, B.J. Thomas, Steve Beavers, Danny Davenport, Rick Gassaway, and William Gassaway, Jr.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge was in charge of arrangements.
