mrs. mary curtis holt

 

Mrs. Mary Curtis Holt, age 96, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2992, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Holt was born in Union County on Wednesday, January 17, 1906, a daughter of the late William Curtis and Vada Erwin Curtis.  She was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Blairsville.  Mrs. Holt was a very faithful member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church, where she had served in many capacities, including cemetery committee and Sunday School teacher.  Mrs. Holt had been preceded in death by her husband, Guss Holt, in 1985, and her son, Lee Holt, who passed away in 2000.

Survivors include grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Bill and Tina Holt, of Blairsville; great granddaughter, Arden Holt, also of Blairsville; daughter-in-law, Mrs. Nan Holt, of Blairsville; and niece, Vada Lee Curtis, of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, February 27, 2002, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Bob Bone officiating.  Special music was presented by Mildred and Nelson LeCroy.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Bob Head, Robert Head, Travis Colwell, Jeff Tanner, Joel Miller, and Robert Rogers.  Interment was in Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery.  If you wish, memorials may be made to Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery Fund, % Alemarie Hamby, 2385 Gardner-Spiva Road, Blairsville, GA 30512.

mr. clifford eugene coleman

 

Mr. Clifford Eugene Coleman, age 84, of Wesley Mtn. Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, February 28, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.  Mr. Coleman was born on April 1, 1917 in Long Bottom, Ohio, the son of the late John Howard Coleman and the late Mary Elizabeth Coleman.  Mr. Coleman was a WWII veteran of the US AirForce, a former Shriner, a member of the American Legion, and was a member of the Rotary Club.  He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Surviving Mr. Coleman are his loving wife of sixty-one years, Mary Josephine Amsbary Coleman, of Blairsville; two daughters and sons-in-law; Karen and Hamilton South, III, of Matinus Island, Maine, Stephanie Coleman and Marvin Colton of Greensboro, GA; one brother and sister-in-law, Ronald and Betty Coleman of Mooresville, NC; five grandchildren: Hamilton South, IV, Mary South, Padraic South, Thomas South, and Sean Colton; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Services for Mr. Coleman were held on Sunday, March 3, 2002 at 2 p.m. from the Branan Lodge with Rev. Travis Adams officiating.

mr. rudolph swanson

 

Mr. Rudolph Swanson, age 94, of Blairsville, GA, formerly of Zephryhills, FL, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Swanson was born in Karisham, Sweden, on Wednesday, April 10, 1907, a son of the late Sven Svenson and Johnna Jonsdotter Svenson.

He is survived by his wife, Helen Geiger Swanson, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Bob Sanchez, of Blairsville; two grandchildren: Robert Sanchez and Terri Sinclair; four great grandchildren and other relatives and friends also survive.

No memorial services are planned at this time.

joseph ray hedden

 

Joseph Ray Hedden, age 83, of Lee Street, Cartersville, GA, died Sunday March 3, 2002.

Mr. Hedden was born April 11, 1918, in Union County, a son of the late Carl and Minnie Ledford Hedden, was retired from Wigley Enterprises and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Blairsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sons: Billy Joe Hedden, Harlan Wayne Hedden, Raymond Edwin Hedden; two sisters: Glyn Coker and Willie Young; and three brothers: Winfred, Jewell and Earl Hedden.

Surviving is his wife, of sixty-seven years, Fannie Mae Dyer Hedden of Cartersville; three sons: Donald R. and Sue Hedden of Cartersville, Jerald Russell and Glenda Hedden of Marietta, Michael Ernest and Melissa Hedden of Kennesaw; three sisters: Wilma Davenport of Blairsville, Blanche Rackstraw of Hiawassee, Betty Rose Bridges of Blairsville and nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services were held Tuesday, March 5, 2002, at 3 p.m. from the chapel of Owen Funeral Home with Rev. Kenny Jacobs officiating. 

Burial followed in Sunset Memory Gardens.

mr. james d. “jack” gray

 

Mr. James D. “Jack” Gray, age 76, of Ivy Log Community, Blairsville, GA, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002, in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Gray was born in Union County, GA, on Sunday, August 16, 1925, a son of the late Roland Lawrence Gray and Myrtis Violet Deaver Gray.  He was a veteran of the US Navy, and served in WWII.  Mr. Gray owned and operated Seldom Rest Farm until his retirement.  For 60 years, Mr. Gray had been a member of Ivy Log Baptist Church.  He was also a member of Dooley Masonic Lodge, #367.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Chambers Gray, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Rufus Everett, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Gwenelda and Larry Connally, also of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Mazie Gray, of Blairsville; daughter, Sherry Gray, of Mebane, NC; granddaughter and her husband, Anna and Robby Roxbury, of Blairsville; granddaughter and fiancé, Katy Gray of Blairsville and Jon Jones, also of Blairsville; granddaughter and her husband, Laina and Donald Elliott, of Blairsville; grandson, Clay Dorsett, and granddaughter, Bethany Dorsett, both of Mebane, NC; grandson and his wife, Mason and Jennifer Dorsett, of Wake Forest, NC; great granddaughter, Abby Dorsett, of Wake Forest; great granddaughter, GrayeLeigh Elliott, of Blairsville; sister and brother –in-law, Charlene and Hoke Sullivan of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 28, 2002, at 3 p.m. from Ivy Log Baptist Church, with Rev. Jerry Karnes officiating.  Special music was presented by Ivy Log Quarter.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Kevin Garrett, Darin Bridges, Darrell Bridges, Bobby Ward, Tony Ledford, and Richard Corn.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort: Harvey Deaver, Ted Tyre, James Bridges.  Interment was in Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery.  If you wish, memorials may be made to Ivy Log Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 6055 Murphy Highway, Blairsville, GA 30512.

mr. john david hislop

 

Mr. John David Hislop, age 81, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2002 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Hislop was born in Windsor, Vermont, on Wednesday, April 7, 1920, a son of the late John Thompson Hislop, and Florence Gerth Hislop.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, and served in World War II, serving in the Pacific Theatre.  Mr. Hislop had been a member of The Masons for over 60 years.  He had been living in this area since 1982, coming here from Ft. Pierce, Florida.  Mr. Hislop was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Schuler Hislop, of the home; daughter, Sandra Swann of Blairsville; and daughter Mary Betty Shearer, of Alexandria, Kentucky; five grandchildren, and two great grandchildren also survive, along with many friends.

Memorial services were held Monday, March 4, 2002 at 2 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home.

If you wish, in lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials be made to Union General Hospital Auxiliary, c/o Union General Hospital.

mrs. willnell nix

 

Mrs. Willnell Nix, age 90, of Cherry Log, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville, Georgia; passed away Saturday, March 2, 2002, in North Georgia Medical Center in Ellijay, Georgia.

Mrs. Nix was born in Union County, Georgia on Saturday, February 4, 1912, a daughter of the late John Shepherd and Ellen Tanner Shepherd.  She was a homemaker and was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.  Mrs. Nix had moved to Cherry Log 23 years ago from Blairsville.  She was the widow of the late Ed Nix, who passed away in 1983.

Surviving are son, Cline Nix, of Cherry Log; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Ann Nix of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Dimple and Robert Donnelly, of Cherry Log; a sister, Geneva Bryson of Blairsville; four grandchildren, four great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 4, 2002 at 4 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Joe Dan Wilkins officiating.  Special music was presented by The Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tim Nix, Richard Nix, Avery Hice, Homer Davenport, Daniel Davenport, and Spencer Stiles.  Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

mrs. ovie payne patterson

 

Mrs. Ovie Payne Patterson, age 86, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, February 26, 2002 in Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega, Georgia.

Mrs. Patterson was born on Tuesday, June 8, 1915, in Clay County, North Carolina, daughter of the late Ruffus Payne and Patsy Matheson Rayne.  She was a homemaker and was the widow of the late Howell Patterson.

She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Deyton, of Dahlonega, Georgia; special niece, Ruby Jones of Blairsville; six grandchildren and other nieces, nephews and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 1 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Randolph Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by Ella Kelley Battle, Evelyn Jones and Lisa Weaver.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Michael Joyce, Roger Joyce, Thomas Henson, Larry Henson, Gary Jones and Josh Bingham.  Interment was in Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.
