Shirley ann wentzek

 

Mrs. Shirley Ann Wentzek, age 68, of Leidel Lane in Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2004 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Wentzek was born on October 24, 1935 in Elizabeth, NJ., the daughter of the late John Itz and the late Margaret Itz.  She, along with her husband, owned and operated the alpine Cabins for over ten years.  Mrs. Wentzek attended St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Surviving Mrs. Wentzek is her loving husband of forty seven years, Fritz Wentzek of Blairsville; one son, Mark Wentzek of Blairsville; one daughter, Susan Wentzek of Oshkosh, WI; two sisters, Arlene Wellbank of NJ, Rose Itz of NC; two grandchildren, Jake and Kayla Wentzek; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Tuesday, March 9,  2004 from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Wise officiating.  Interment followed in St. Clare’s Columnbarium.  The family requests that memorials be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Wentzek’s memory.

judith b. fechner

 

Mrs. Judith B. Fechner, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away unexpectedly on Friday, February 27, 2004.

Mrs. Fechner was born in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on Monday, December 2, 1929, a daughter of the late Donald Brown and Adele Sadler Brown.  She had been employed as a computer programmer for a utility company.  Mrs. Fechner had lived in Blairsville since 1988, moving here from Ft. Pierce, Florida.  She was a member of The House of Prayer Interdenominational Church.

Surviving are her husband, Gene, of their home; children, David Fechner, of Been, NE., Robert Fechner, of Colorado Springs, CO., Lauran Emmert, of Ft. Oglethorpe, GA., Lisa Fechner, of Seward, NE; sister, Cindy Gillmore, of Johnstown, NY; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive, along with many friends and other relatives.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, March 3, 2044 at The House of Prayer Interdenominational Church in Blairsville, with Pastor Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by The House of Prayer Church Choir.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

helen hiers

 

Mrs. Helen Hiers, age 75, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Tuesday, march 2, 2004 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Hiers was born in Rockland County, New York, on Monday, November 19, 1928, a daughter of the late Tracy Post and Sadie Cullen Post.  She was the widow of the late Herman Hiers, who passed away in 2000.  Mrs. Hiers had been living in Union County since moving here from West Palm Beach, Florida in 1990.  She was of the Episcopalian faith.

Surviving are three children, Donna Senn, of Blairsville, David Hiers, of Sanford, Florida and Holly Beattie of Blairsville; two sisters, Vivian Farmer of Sanford, Florida and Mary Ellen Smith of West Palm Beach, Florida; a brother, Richard Post of West Palm Beach; five grandchildren, Katrina Hiers, of New York City, Shannon Nix, Cory Beattie, JoAnna Beattie, Colten Beattie; three great grandchildren, Hayley Nix and Hunter Nix, all of Blairsville and Drew Hiers, of New York City; many other relatives and friends also survive.

No local memorial services have been planned at this time.

lonnie mack jones

 

Mr. Lonnie Mack Jones, age 53, of the Murphy Hwy. in Blairsville, passed away on Friday, March 5, 2004 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, following a brief illness.  Mr. Jones was born on December 14, 1950 in Union County, the son of the late Carl M. Jones and the late Flora Mae Stamey Jones.  Mr. Jones was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was employed with McClure’s Trucking Company for a number of years.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Hoyt and Kirk and one sister, Patricia.  Mr. Jones was a member of Mt. Herman Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Jones is his loving wife, Patsy McClure Jones of Blairsville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Heidi and Marty Hooper of Blairsville and Gretchen Jones of Canton, GA; two sons, Jason Harper and Kevin Rogers, both of Blairsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Hank and Sherry Jones of Blairsville; three grandsons, Dalton, Austin and Seth Hooper; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, march 7, 2004 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Robert Flowers, Rev. William Sisum and Rev. Randolph Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by the Robert Flowers Family and Michelle Sanders.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Dalton Hooper, Chris McClure, Levi McClure, Shannon Jones, Andy McClure and Bobby Rogers.  Serving as Honorary Pallbearer was Austin Hooper.  Interment followed in the Liberty Hill Methodist Church Cemetery.

mary e. cantrell

 

Mary E. Cantrell, age 70, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away March 1, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Dee Cantrell in February of 2003.  She was born to the late Joseph and Allie (Henderson) Smith on September 14, 1933 in Green County, MO.

She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Rad Sykes of Blairsville; one granddaughter, Amber Sykes, also of Blairsville; two brothers, Archie Smith of McPherson, KS; and Howell Henderson, Webb City, MO; and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Memorial services were held on Friday, March 5th from the chapel of Banister Funeral Home with the Rev. Kathleen McKevill officiating.

Banister Funeral Home in Hiawassee was in charge of arrangements.

patricia callahan scott

 

Patricia Anne Callahan Scott, age 71, passed away February 19, 2004 following a 10 month battle with pancreatic and liver cancer.  She was born June 13, 1932 in Green Bay, Wisconsin and moved to Chicago with her parents and older brother, Bernard when she was young.  The family later relocated to Sacramento, California where “Patsy” attended St. Francis Girls’ High School and began a lifelong love affair with music and theater.

In 1953, Patricia married Richard Hayes Scott and they had five children together.  She lived in Texas and Virginia before moving to Ormond Beach, Florida in 1976.  Patricia worked as a grants accountant at Daytona Beach community College and was a favorite “showstopper” at the Daytona Playhouse.  Following her retirement in 1994, Pat moved to Georgia, eventually settling in Blairsville, where she was active with Friends of the Library, the Institute for Continuing Learning and local politics.  She also served as a volunteer reading tutor at the Lifelong Learning Center and initiated the Books for Babies Program for newborns at Union General Hospital.

Patricia is survived by five children, Terrie, San Antonio, TX; mark, McDonough, GA; Richard, Jr., San Antonio, TX’ Gregg, Dallas, TX and Kimberly, Olney, MD; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren and a wide circle of extended relatives and loving friends.

charles frederick varner

 

Mr. Charles Frederick Varner, age 96, of Mountain View Road in Blairsville passed away on Saturday, March 6, 2004.  Mr. Varner was born on August 20, 1907.  He was a survivor of WWII, having served with the US Navy aboard the USS Makin Island.  He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Survivors are his loving wife Clara, of sixty five years; his brother, Robert Varner and sister, Ruth Modisett, both of Virginia.

No funeral service is planned.  Interment was in the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millegeville, Georgia.

Donations may be sent to All Saints Lutheran Church, 2050 Earl Shelton Road, c/o the Rev. Charles Houska, Blairsville, GA., 30512.
