mr. john harley holloway

 

Mr. John Harley Holloway, age 85, Burnette Lane, Suches, Passes away on Sunday, March 13, 2005 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Holloway was born on June 17, 1919 in Union County, the son of the late Joe Holloway and the late Louise Self Holloway.  He retired from the State Highway Department with other thirty-three years of service.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dortha Perry Holloway in 1959, and by his second wife, Anna Lou Dyer Holloway in 2003.  Mr. Holloway was a member of Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Holloway are one son and daughter-in-law, J.R. and Janice Holloway of Suches; one daughter, Wanda Anderson of Dahlonega; one sister, may Jarrard of Union County; two brothers, D.L. Holloway of Kannapolis, NC, J.D. Holloway of Dahlonega; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church in Suches with the Rev. Michael Wilkes, Rev. Clarence Drummond and Rev. Russell Lyle officiating.  The grandsons served as pallbearers.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

mrs. deborah lynn lane

 

Mrs. Deborah Lynn Lane, age 46 of Country Corners Road, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2005 at her home following a brief illness.  Mrs. Lane was born on January 22, 1959 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Paul Cain and the late Mary Robert Cain.  She was employed with Circle K.  Mrs. Lane attended the House of Prayer Church.

Surviving Mrs. Lane are her loving husband of twelve years, Brian Lane of Blairsville; father, Paul Cain of CO; one son, Jeremy Worsham; one daughter, Tracy Worsham; three sisters, Josette Weimer, Bernice Cain, Cheryl Cain; one brother, Bobby Cain, all of Chicago, IL.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

mr. howard hosa kern

 

Mr. Howard Hosa Kern, age 85, of Wesley Mtn. Drive, Blairsville, formerly of Largo, FL, passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2005 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Kern was born on May 7, 1918 in Coopersville, MI, the son of the late Howard A. Kern and the late Claire Dunning Kern.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air force and also was a member of the D.A.V. and the VFW.  He was a member of the Largo Masonic Lodge of F&AM.  Mr. Kern was a member of the Coosa United Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Kern are his loving wife of seventeen years, Helen Mae Green Kern of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Ronald Shuck of Blairsville; step daughter and son-in-law, Cecelia and Frank Pennington of Jonesville, VA; two grandchildren, four great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday, March 16, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jon Herrin officiating.  Special music was presented by James Stephens.  Interment followed in the Bay Pine National Cemetery in St. Petersburg, FL.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Regency Hospice in Mr. Kern’s memory.

betty lois helton totherow

 

Mrs. Betty Lois Helton Totherow, age 62, of Meeks Rd., Blairsville, GA passed away on Wednesday, march 9, 2005 in the St. Joseph’s hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.  Mrs. Totherow was born on March 8, 1943 in Union County, the daughter of the late Newman Helton and the late Inez Shepherd Helton.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and had been employed with Georgia Boot for over thirty years.  She was preceded in death by a daughter, Debbie Hunter in 2004 and by a brother, Roger Helton in 2000.  Mrs. Totherow was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Totherow are two daughters, Sheila McKinney and Lora Kirkland, both of Blairsville, four sons and three daughters-in-law, Davis and Marsha Totherow, Michael and Cindy Totherow, Robby and Cindy Totherow, Jeff Totherow, all of Blairsville, one brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Agnes Helton of Ellijay, seven grandchildren, Alan and Jeremy Hunter, Kayla and Drake Kirkland, Adam Totherow, Brittany and Christin Collins, two great grandchildren, Austin and Bradley Hunter, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held March 12, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon Henderson and Rev. Joe Dan Wilkens officiating.  Special music was presented by Leon Henderson.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers:  Jimmy Taylor, Tim Nelson, James Nix, Alan Hunter, Michael Nix, Bobby Warren, Jason Totherow and Ben Collins.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church cemetery.

charles r. “charlie” caldwell, jr.

 

Charles R. “Charlie” Caldwell Jr., age 79, of Blairsville, GA, died Wednesday, March 9, 2005 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta.  Born in Fulton County on September 4, 1925, he was the son of the late Charles Roscoe Caldwell, SR. of Tyler, Texas and Huldah Williams Caldwell of Augusta, GA.  During World War II he served in the United States Navy.  Later he owned and operated CC&A Materials Handling Equipment Company until his retirement in 1988.  He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Greensboro.  Charlie was an accomplished painter in watercolors, an avid fisherman and loved reading the great philosophers.

He is survived by a daughter, Susan Caldwell of Athens, GA; special friends, the Irvin family of Blairsville, GA who lovingly cared for him and whose daughter Lindsey adopted Charlie as her grandfather; and a number of other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by a son, Charles R. Chip Caldwell, III.

Memorial services were held on Saturday, March 12, 2005 at 2 p.m. at McCommons Chapel with Rev. Ira McKever officiating.  Inurnment was at Greensboro City Cemetery.  The family requests that any memorials be made to the Athens Area Humane Society, 399 Beaverdam Road, Athens, GA 30605.  A reception will follow the service at the Reynolds Family Home in Greensboro.  McCommons Funeral Home, 109 W. mrs. vivian elizabeth thomas cook stephens

 

Mrs. Vivian Elizabeth Thomas Cook Stephens, age 81, of Blairsville, GA passed away Thursday, march 10, 2005 in Blairsville.  Mrs. Stephens was born Friday, April 6, 1923 in Blount County, AL, fifth child of the late Hugh Thomas and the late Carrie Bell Holley.  She was preceded in death by two brothers, Ted Thomas and Junior Thomas, both of Alexander City, AL.

Mrs. Stephens resided in LaGrange, GA with her daughter, Allyson prior to 1963.  Afterward, she lived in Hapeville, GA, and in 1993, moved to Blue Ridge, GA.  In 2003, Mrs. Stephens moved to Blairsville.  She was an employee of Delta Airlines, in Atlanta, GA, having worked for the company from 1963 until 1988.  In 1963, she completed her business degree in Augusta, GA.

Mrs. Stephens was an active Baptist Sunday School teacher, volunteer for the early March of Dimes program, and enjoyed entertaining family and friends.  Mrs. Stephens and her daughter traveled to many wonderful and beautiful places before she moved to the North Georgia mountains to be near Allyson and her family.  She loved being involved with Allyson’s activities, whether it was being at 4-H camp, clowning with her in parades and hospitals, or just being with her family and friends.

Survivors include: daughter and son-in-law, Allyson and Charles E. McGraw, Jr. of Blairsville, GA; 3 sisters, Dorothy T. Gilliland of North Augusta, SC and Juanita Walburn of Atlanta, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Marie T. and Cleon Vernon of Alexander City, AL; and a brother, Wilburn E. Thomas of Coosada, AL; many nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, march 18, at 7 p.m. from the chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville with Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7, Friday.  Interment will be in the Hillview Memorial Gardens in Alexander City, AL on Sunday.

She will sincerely be missed by her many friends and family members, but most especially by her sister Nita, nephew Alan, and niece Holley.  Thanks are expressed to all who helped care for her at Union General Hospital, Union County Nursing Home, and Regency Hospice.

mrs. eva stanley tate

 

Mrs. Eva Stanley Tate, age 96, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, March 10, 2005 in Blue Ridge.

Mrs. Tate was born Wednesday, December 2, 1908 in Gilmer County, GA, to the late Joseph Stanley and the late Elizabeth Aaron Stanley.  She was a member of the Blairsville Church of Christ and had been active with the Tuesday Ladies Bible class.  Mrs. Tate was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Tate, in 1968.  Mrs. Tate lived for many years in Macon, GA.  During World War II, she helped in the war effort by working in an aircraft manufacturing plant.  After the war, she continued working as an aircraft mechanic at Warner Robins, GA.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law: Jean and Bill McCanliss, of Cabot, Arkansas and Pauline and Thomas Ezell, of Blairsville, GA; a brother and sister-in-law, Arvil and Martha Stanley, of Ellijay, GA; 6 grandchildren: Wayne McCanliss, of Atlanta, Allen McCanliss, of Houston, TX, Davis McCanliss, of Coushatta, LA, Tommy Ezell, of Diamond Bar, CA, Charles Ezell, of Lexington, SC,, and Deborah K. Thompson, of Macon, GA.

Funeral services were held Monday, March 14, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the Blairsville Church of Christ, with Minister Terry Stuart officiating.  Special music was presented by The Church of Christ Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Wayne McCanliss, Allen McCanliss, David McCanliss, Tommy Ezell, Charles Ezell, and Jack Stanley.  Serving as honorary escort to the family was Doyle Stanley.  Burial followed in Pisgah Church of Christ Cemetery in Ellijay, GA.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Blairsville Church of Christ Building Fund.

Mrs. Shirley Anne Cline, age 68, Fern Brook, Blairsville, passed away on Wednesday, march 9, 2005 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.  She was born on July 12, 1936 in Albany, IN, the daughter of Ruby Brown Evans and the late Francis Evans.  Before retiring she was employed with the Indiana State Police for over fifteen years.  She had attended OASIS at the First United Methodist Church of Union County.  Mrs. Cline was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving Mrs. Cline are her loving husband of forty-nine years, Richard Cline of Blairsville; mother, Ruby Brown Evans of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Bruce and Cynthis J. Cline of Muncie, IN, Ajenor Cintra of Miami, FL; one sister and brother-in-law, Janet and Jim Vorhess of Selma, IN; two grandchildren, Cody Francis Cline and Curtis Monroe Cline; step-grandchild, Presley Thomas Smith, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, march 18, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the parson-Rust Funeral Home Chapel in Albany, IN.  The following gentlemen will serve as pallbearers: Bruce Cline, Ajenor Cintra, Rex Lyons, Tom Jarvas, Steve Hamilton, and Bob Edwards.  Interment will follow in the Strong Cemetery in Albany.  Local visitation was held on Saturday, March 10, 2005 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. from the Mountain View Funeral Home.  You may sign the family guest book on-line at www.mountainviewfuneralhome.com.

Mr. David Bell, age 93, of Blairsville, passed away Wednesday, march 9, 2005 in Chatuge Regional Nursing Home.

Mr. Bell was born in Canada, July 2, 1911, a son of the late William and Mary Jane (Armstrong) Bell.  He moved here in 2004 from Port St. Lucie, FL, and was of the Methodist Faith.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Bell and a son, Rex Bell.

Survivors include: son, Dale and Linda Bell of Blairsville, GA; granddaughter, April Frost, granddaughter, Kristin Hayes, grandson, Randy Bell, granddaughter, Robin Bruzdzinski.
