mr. ralph davenport

 

Mr. Ralph Davenport, age 77, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2004 at his home.

Mr. Davenport was born on Saturday, March 27, 1926, a son of the late Erastus Sherman Davenport and Lura Mae Richards Davenport.  He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, and served in the European Theatre.  Mr. Davenport was a member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114, F&AM; Blairsville Chapter of The Order of The Eastern Star #304; and had served on the city council for many years.

Surviving are his wife, M. Kathryn White Davenport, of their home; daughter, K. Dianne Davenport, of Blairsville; brother and sister-in-law, Randolph and Sammy Davenport, of Grayson, Georgia; sister, Leota King, of Blairsville; sister-in-law, Patsy R. Davenport, of Blairsville; brother-in-law, S.A. McRimmon, Sr., of Laurinburg, North Carolina; brother-in-law and his wife, Ben J. and Joan White, of Enfield, Connecticut; and sister-in-law, Jim Ann Stewart, of Athens, Georgia; Nieces and nephews: Ron Davenport, Dennis Davenport, Marc Davenport, Patsy Loyless, Carolyn Whitman, Shirley Jones, Debra Davenport, Lesia King, Craig Davenport, Doug Beaver, Archie McRimmon, Jr., Delia Muse, Patsy Bellinger, Dallas Stewart, Delta Son-derman, and Tim White.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, march 9, 2004, at 6:00 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Troy Acree, Rev. B.A. Buchanan, and Rev. Danny Parris officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelley Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ethan Walker, McCoy Walker, David Tanner, Jason Collins, Rex Dockery, and Brock Kelley.  Serving as honorary escort to the family were Gene Rich, Mr. Davenport’s beloved nieces and nephews, and member of Allegheny Masonic Lodge.  Burial was on Wednesday, March 10, 2004, at 11:00 a.m. at Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

edwina jeanette haist

 

Mrs. Edwina Jeanette Haist, age 71, of Lance Crossing Rd., Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, march 9, 2004 at her home following an extended illness.  Mrs. Haist was born on Jan. 18, 1933 in Murray, KY, the daughter of the late Edwin Franklin Brown and Nancy Helen Hughes Brown.  She had retired in 1983 from Sewell Plastics where she was a quality control supervisor for several years.  She and her husband had made their home in Blairsville for the past ten years, moving here from Miramar, FL.  Mrs. Haist was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Haist are her loving husband of forty two years, Lloyd Haist of Blairsville; two daughters, Sally C. Lockwood of Columbia, SC, and Terry Powell of Hollywood, FL; two sons, Robert Haist of Rome, GA, and John Anderson of Pembroke Pines, FL; mother, Helen Carpenter of Saginaw, MI; one sister, Karen Streeter of Saginaw; one brother, Joe Brown of Mt. Morris, MI; four grandchildren, six great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service was held at the home with the Rev. James Paul officiating.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Haist’s memory.

william witt wheeler

 

Mr. William Witt Wheeler, age 85, of Bunker Way in Blairsville, formerly of Hayesville, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Wheeler was born on December 22, 1918 in Clay County, NC., the son of the late George Greer Wheeler and the late Maggie Ledford Wheeler.  He was a lifelong resident of Clay County, except for the past six years.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ruth Gibson Wheeler; four brothers, Richard, Ray, Allen and John Wheeler; and one sister, Annie Wheeler.

Surviving Mr. Wheeler are tow daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda and Dale Gee of Blairsville and Barbara and Danny Bright of Morganton; seven sons and three daughters-in-law, Billy Wheeler of Robinsville, NC., Dennis Wheeler of Hiawassee, Danny Wheeler of Morganton, Bobby and Karen Wheeler of Blairsville David Wheeler of Blairsville, Jimmy and Minnie Sue Wheeler of Blairsville, Timmy and Sheila Wheeler of Blairsville; nineteen grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, march 12, 2004 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by Randy and Tammy Hughes.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, Kalvin Patton, Randy Patton, Dwayne Wheeler, Josh Hampton, Jessie Magaha, Brandon Anderson and Little Jimmy Wheeler.  Interment followed in the Union Hill Cemetery in Hayesville.

mrs. fumiko (kay) snow

 

Mrs. Fumiko (better known as Kay) Snow, age 73, of Taylor Park Road in Blairsville passed away on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta, following a brief illness.  Mrs. Snow was born in Kayoto, Japan on December 21, 1930, the daughter of the late Tunejii Fujii and the late Moto Fujii.  She had been employed with the Levi Strauss Company for several years before her retirement in 1996.  She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a member of the First Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Snow is her loving husband of fifty two years, John Snow of Blairsville; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Pat and Denise Snow of Blairsville, John Snow, Jr., of Blairsville, Henry and Sheila Snow of Murphy; two brothers and three sisters, Mithuo Fujii, Teruko Endo, Akemi Kubota, Masako Iga and Kathuaki Fujii, all of Kayoto, Japan; nine grandchildren; one great grandchild; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Danny Parris and Rev. Stacy Dyer officiating.  Special music was presented by Sam Ensley and Teresa Gay.  Members of the North Georgia Honor Guard served as Pallbearers.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

lendell m. fensterle

 

Mrs. Lendell M. Fensterle, age 74, of Blairsville passed away on Friday, march 5, 2004 following an extended illness.  She was born on July 6, 1929 in Kansas.  She devoted her life as a wife, mother, grand-mother, great grandmother and care giver.  Mrs. Fensterle was a memberof the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was relieved of her duty and was called home after a job well done.  She will remain in our hearts for her loving care and encouragement that she gave.  All who knew her will miss her and the inspiration she was.  We love and miss you, till we meet again.

george booth durkin, III

 

George Booth Durkin, III, age 64, passed away on March 12, 2004 in Union General Hospital.  George was born in Philadelphia, PA., on May 7, 1939.  He moved to Miami, FL., at the age of 6 where he spent the next 57 years.  He retired from Miami Dade County Water and Sewer Department in October 2002 and relocated to Blairsville, GA., in April, 2003.

He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Judy Durkin, Blairsville, GA; daughter, Mary Katherine Kirsch (Paul) of Miami, FL; son, David Douglas Durkin (Helen) of Miami, FL; daughter, Karen E. Kirk (Byron) of Miami, FL., and son Peter B. Durkin (Lorrie) of Davie, FL; eight grandchildren, Nicole and Paul Kirsch, Jr., Richard and Jessica Kirk, Amber and David Durkin, Jr., and Catelynn and Tyler Durkin; one great grandson, Jeremy Kirsch

He had a great passion for electronics, computers, music, movies, photography and history.  He loved the sun and ocean, as well as driving out west and gambling in Las Vegas.  His greatest joys were spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and his two female dogs, whom he called “his ladies”.

George spent two years in the U.S. marine Corps.  He began his working career at the City of Miami, Diner Key as a mail clerk in 1959.  He later transferred to the Water and Sewer Department where he worked his way up from meter reader to the position of Chief, Customer Services; a position he held for 23 years.

The funeral was held on Sunday, March 14, 2004 at Coosa United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Herrin officiating.  Special music was presented by The Kelley Trio.
