Rev. Leonard H. Ballew, age 95, of Blairsville, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2003 in Union General Hospital.

Rev. Ballew was born in Cherokee County, NC, Tuesday, February 11, 1908, a son of the late Luther Melvin and Sarah Elizabeth (Olvey) Ballew.  He was raised in Cherokee County but had lives most of his life in Union and Fannin Counties.  Rev. Ballew was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Edith Telitha Ballew in 1972.

Survivors include: his wife, Odith Ballew of Blairsville, GA; children, Bobbie O. and Col. William L. Kinney of Braselton, GA, Audrey B. and Charles H. Walker of Loganville, GA, Adrianne and Charles Eddie Truett of Blairsville, GA Odell C. Ballew of Blairsville, GA, Katherine E. and Stanley Odom of Blairsville, GA and Jerry and Chearl Ballew of Blairsville, GA; Step-son, Cecil and Pearl warren of Andrews, NC; sister, Vesta Chastain of Andres, NC; twelve grandchildren and nineteen great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday March 15, 2003 at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Gerald Mathis officiating.  Music was by Jeannette Garrett.  Grandsons served as pallbearers.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

john bill townson

 

John Bill Townson, age 57, of Terrace Avenue, Murphy, NC died Wednesday, March 12, 2003 in the Murphy Medical Center in Murphy, NC.

He was a native of Union County, Georgia.  John had worked as on orderly for Union General Hospital in Blairsville, GA, and had worked for the Town of Murphy.  John was a mason and a member of the Masonic Allegheny lodge #114 of Blairsville, GA and was of the Baptist Faith.  He was the son of the late, Guy Clifford and Rosa Garren Townson.

He is survived by his wife, Gladys Frankum Townson; two sons and their wives, Charles and Julie Townson of Hayesville, NC and jerry and Michelle Townson of Blue Ridge, GA; one sister, Anna Mae Prince of Dalton, GA; two grandsons, Robbie Stiles and Guy Macklinley Townson; and one granddaughter, Verner Marie Townson.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 15, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Townson-Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy, NC.  The Rev. Richard Mashburn and Rev. Jerry Rice officiating.  Burial was in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Union County, GA with Masonic graveside rites conducted by the Masonic Allegheny Lodge #1`14 of Blairsivlle, GA.  Pallbearers were the Masons from the Masonic Allegheny Lodge #114.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family, C/O Gladys Townson, 222 Terrace Avenue, Murphy, NC 28906.

mr. james thomas foster

 

Mr. James Thomas Foster, age 71 of Leisure Terrace, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, March 16, 2003 in Union General Hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Foster was born on November 21, 1931 in McDonough, GA, the son of the late Thomas Emory Foster and the late Thelma Lucile Anderson Foster.  He was a veteran of the US Navy of the Korean War.  He was a retired advertising executive in which was his lifetime career.  Mr. Foster was a member of the Blairsville Church of Nazarene.

Surviving Mr. Foster are his loving wife of forty nice years, Sarah Cooper Foster of Blairsville; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Yong Foster of Linden, TN, Philip Kent Foster of Atlanta; one brother and sister-in-law, William (Gene) and Bessie Foster of Jonesboro, GA; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in McDonough, GA with the Rev. Tom Rash and Rev. Jeffrey Foster officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Philip Foster, Gene Foster, Gary Foster, David Foster, Chris Cooper and Dick Cooper.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

mr. ray f. kelley

 

Ray F. Kelley, age 87, of Buford passed away Saturday, March 15, 2003.  Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2003 at the Chapel of Tapp Funeral Home with interment following at Broadlawn Memorial Gardens.  Rev. Charles Gilliland will officiate.

Born in Blairsville, Mr. Kelley was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps, a WWII Army veteran, and worked at War Assets, Atlanta.  He was retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital after 35 years, a member of the American Legion Post 127, one of the founders of the Buford Booster Club, and had assisted numerous veterans with financial aid.

His wife, Jimmy B. Kelley, preceded him in death.  Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Mike and Elaine Kelley; daughter and son-in-law Judy and John Pirkle; grandchildren Kelley Pirkle and Crystal Kelley Sigler; great grandchildren Kailey Pirkle and Michael Sigler; brothers Ira Kelley of Atlanta and Neal Kelley of Blairsville; several nieces and nephews.  The family will receive friends at Tapp Funeral Home on Monday, March 17, 2003 from 3:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m.  Tapp Funeral Home and crematory, Buford (770) 945-9345 or www.tappfuneralhome.com
