Ms. Faye Loretta Jones, age 65, of National City, CA, passed away March 13, 2007.  She was born October 6, 1943 in Blairsville, GA.  She was a retired assistant book keeper.

She is survived by two sons, Jason and Tim; sisters, Sheila, Rachel, and Darlene; brothers, Jimmy, Rick, and David.

Funeral services will be held April 14, 2007 at 2 p.m. in Blairsville.  Interment will follow in Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

vivian mae kittle

 

Mrs. Vivian Mae Kittle, age 79, of Kittle Rd., Blairsville passed away on Monday, March 12, 2007 in the Clay County Care Center following a brief illness.  Mrs. Kittle was born on March 16, 1927 in Cleveland, OH, the daughter of the late Raymond Schafer and the late Florence Thome Schafer.  She, along with her husband, owned and operated a roofing company for several years.  They had made their home in Blairsville for the past thirty-two years, moving here from Ft. Pierce, FL.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John F. Kittle in 2000 and by a sister, Betty Jane Duncan in 1978.  Mrs. Kittle was of the Catholic faith.

Surviving Mrs. Kittle are two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Stanley Richardson of Blairsville, and Carol and Albert Martin of Blairsville; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Mary Schafer of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; two nieces, Linda and Mike Doud, Gretchen and Steve Everman; eight grandchildren, Lesa Byrd, Nannie Loner, Kimberly Bridges, Tawana Aaron, Suzan Sanford, Tina Wade, Kristy Johnson and John Martin; sixteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, march 15,   2007 at 7 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Mindy Combs, Tammy Blassingame, Danita Kennedy and Patsy Phillips.  Interment followed in the Kittle Family Cemetery.  The family met with friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening from 6-9 p.m.

robert neal collins

 

Mr. Robert Neal Collins, Sr., age 85, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2007 at his home following a several month illness.  Mr. Collins was born Thursday, March 17, 1921 in Union County, GA to the late Francis Thurman Collins and the late Mary Viola Collins.  A lifelong resident of this area, he was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church, where he was a deacon for over 50 years.  Mr. Collins was retired from the U.S. Air Force, where he was a pilot, and served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.  He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1970, as a Major.  Mr. Collins was professor of mathematics at both Young Harris College and Union County High School.  Mr. Collins was a Certified Flight Instructor, and taught many people in the North Georgia Area to fly; He was also a farmer and an avid golfer.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Cecil W. Collins and James T. Collins.

Survivors include his wife, Ruby Rogers Collins; son and daughter-in-law and grandchildren: Robert Neal Collins, Jr. and Michele A. Collins, and Jessica A. Collins and Christina V. Collins, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, grandchildren and step-grandchildren: Rehnee Dyer and Larry E. Dyer Sr., of Marietta; Larry E. Dyer, Jr., and Nicholas C. Dyer, of Marietta; Michele D. Williams and Kelly D. Cantrell, of Gainesville, GA; son and daughter-in-law, and grandchildren: Joseph R. Collins, Colleen H. Collins, Alexander Joseph Collins and Emma Grace Collins, all of Blairsville; sisters: Mrs. Hazel Clary, of Blairsville; Mrs. M. Catherine Fortenberry, of Ault, Colorado; and Mrs. Betty J. Lawrence, of Destin, FL.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 17, 2007 at 11 a.m. from the Choestoe Baptist Church with the Rev. Ken Zollinger, Rev. C.R. “Dick” Stillwell, and Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  The body was instate at the church starting at 10:30 a.m.  The eulogy was presented by Mr. Clyde Collins.  Music was provided by Martha Collins, Jo Mosley and Michele Collins, and The Choestoe Baptist Church Choir.  Graveside services followed in Choestoe Baptist Cemetery with Rev. Troy Acree presiding, with military graveside honors presented by North Georgia Honor Guard.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: William “Bud” Akins, Fred Woodward, Joseph Lawrence, Ronald G. Clary, James H. Hunter, Jr., and Curtis Saunders.  Honorary pallbearers included Choestoe Baptist Church Deacons.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Choestoe Baptist Church Building Fund, 4455 Choestoe Church road, Blairsville, GA 30512.

katherine (kay) hourihan

 

Mrs. Katherine (Kay) Hourihan, age 1003, of Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2007 in the Union County Nursing Home.  She was born in Brookline, MA to the late Julia Kelley Carey and John T. Carey.  She was preceded in death by her brother, Frank  Carey and her daughter, Maureen Hourihan O’Brien.  Her late husband, George Donovan Hourihan died in 19941 and Kay remained a widow for the past fifty-five years.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, George V. and Tina Hourihan of Blairsville; a brother-in-law, J.B. Hourihan of Gainesville, FL; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren as well as nieces and nephews.

She attended business college in Boston and worked in the Boston area.  In 1934 she married George D. Hourihan, a Miami native and Pioneer, and moved to Miami.  She remained in Miami until moving to Blairsville in 1999 to live with her son and daughter-in-law, George and Tina Hourihan.  Kay worked as a Judicial Secretary and retired from the State of Florida.  In retirement she worked as a secretary for doctors and attorneys.  She also did church and hospital volunteer work.  She was a world traveler and had visited the Far East, Middle East and Europe.

Kay was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Miami where she attended Mass daily.,  In Blairsville she was a member of St. Francis of Assissi Catholic Church.  A memorial Mass will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2007 at 10 a.m. from St. Francis of Assissi in Blairsville with Father Richard Wise officiating.  A memorial service will also be held at Holy Rosary in Miami at a later date.  There will be no viewing and interment will be at the City of Miami cemetery.  Memorials may be made to St. Francis of Assissi Building Fund Kitchen Account.

major dennis allen wheeler

 

Major Dennis Allen Wheeler, faithful husband, loving father, and proud grandfather, born August 13, 1953 in Orlando, FL died Saturday, February 10, 2007 in Blairsville, GA.  Major Wheeler honorably and proudly served his country for 24 years in the United States Marine Corp.  Dennis considered being a Marine and serving his country to be one of the greatest honors of his life, second only to being a father and a grandfather.  Dennis was the younger of two sons born to Roman and Deloris Wheeler of Blairsville.  Dennis’ older brother Sam Wheeler resides in Orlando, FL.  Dennis the husband of Maria Wheeler and together have two daughters, Chantel Carroll and Heather Byers.  To the Marines that served with him he was known as the Major, to his friends and family he was Dennis, but to the four people he loved the most, his grandchildren, Dylan, Alissa, Channa and Shae, he was affectionately known as “Dado.”

Dennis had the great fortune of traveling the world and seeing many great things in his time in the Marines, but when all of his travels were over his favorite place he found was at his house surrounded by his family in Blairsville, GA.  Dennis continually worked with love to build his home in Blairsville, but instead of just a home he built a loving family.  Those that knew and loved him he will be sorely missed.  SEMPER FI “DADO.”

Memorial Services were conducted on Wednesday February 14th, at 2 p.m. from the Veterans Memorial Park in Blue Ridge, GA with Chaplain Mark Atwood officiating.  Full military honors were provided by the Active United States Marine Corp and the North Georgia Honor Guard.  Condolences may be sent to the family at www.akinsfuneralhome.-com.

betty jean dyer harrell

 

Mrs. Betty Jean Dyer Harrell, age 80, of Rome, GA, and Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, March 12, 2007.  Mrs. Harrell was born Wednesday, May 26, 1036 in Habersham County, GA, to the late Norman Vester Dyer and the late Jane Self Dyer.  Mrs. Harrell and her husband were part-time residents of Union County, GA and attended grace Presbyterian Church while here in Blairsville.  Mrs. Harrell was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Rome.  Betty graduated from West Georgia College and GSCW.  She was a former Pink Lady at Floyd Medical Center, charter and lifetime member of the New Romans Club, and belonged to the Old Unicoi Chapter of the DAR.

Survivors include: husband, J. Lee Harrell; son and daughter-in-law, Michael N. and Beth Harrell of Lookout Mountain, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Mark L. and Sherry Harrell of Norcross, GA; twin sister, Mary Helen Perry of Villa Rica, GA; sister and brother-in-law, Sarah Ruth and Dr. L.L. Trimble of Duluth, GA; grandchildren, Abbie Bryant, Ivey Harrell, Graham Harrell, Elizabeth Sydney Harrell, Megan Grace Harrell and Christopher Lee Harrell and nephew and niece, Jerry and Larissa Trimble.  Many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held in Rome, GA, at First Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 14, 2007.  The services were conducted by Dr. James Van Dyke and Rev. Scott Jackson.  Visitation was held in Rome, GA at Daniel’s Funeral Home, on Tuesday evening.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, march 14, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the New Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Scott Jackson officiating.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Joe Dyer, Gordon Dyer, Lee Knight, Tom Lunsden, Bud Fitton, Tom Murphy, Bud Huggins, Larry Samples and Clyde Collins.

Grace Dupree White, age 89, of Blairsville, formerly of Cherokee County, GA for 81 years died Wednesday, March 14, 2007.  She was retired from the Georgia State Board of Education, a member of Eastern Star Chapter 455, and a member of harmony Grove Baptist Church in Blairsville, GA.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude White.

Survivors include daughter and son-in0-law, Marie and Rev. Dewey Cox of Blairsville; sisters and brother-in-law, Thelma and Prescott Kimmons and Alice Dupree Dunn of Acworth; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, Phillip and Amy Hooper Cox of Hayesville, NC; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held Saturday, March 17, 2007 from the Chapel of South Canton Funeral Home with Rev. Dewey Cook and Rev. Wade Plott officiating.  Interment followed in Rolling Hills Memory Gardens.  The family received friends on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour at South Canton Funeral Home and Chapel in Canton, GA.

Mrs. Peggy Shaw, age 82, a long time resident of Suches GA passed away Monday, march 12, 2007 at the Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville, GA.  She was the daughter of the late Ben G. Roberts and Fannie Bell Abercrombie Roberts.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy P. Shaw and daughter Shirley M. Abbott.

Mrs. Shaw is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Steve and Angie Shaw of Dawsonville, GA and Perry Shaw of Dawsonville; grandchildren, Ashley, Cody, Dakota, Brittany, and Michael; nieces, Joyce Powell of Eatonton, GA, Sara P. Rhoden of Warner Robbins, GA; nephews, George Prince of Woodstock, GA, Kenny Roberts of Canton, GA, Jimmy and Chester Roberts of Jacksonville, FL, Robert and Richard Smith of Phoenix, AZ; great nieces, Debbie Ellington of Thomaston, GA, Robin Herron of Lawrenceville, GA, and Penny Neal of Atlanta, GA; a number of other relatives also survive.

A graveside funeral was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2007 at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church #2 Cemetery in Suches, GA with Rev. William Phillips officiating.  The family received friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 9 p.m.

patricia thornton middleton

 

Mrs. Patricia Thornton Middleton, age 70, of Blairsville, GA passed away Friday, March 16, 2007 at Union General Hospital in Blairsville.  Mrs. Middleton was born Thursday, January 7, 1937 in Jefferson County, TX to the late Fred Thornton and the late Dorothy Rose Simmons Thornton.  She had lived in Blairsville since 1993, when she and her husband moved from Atlanta.  She was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, George Middleton, of Blairsville; daughter, Valerie Lynn Adams, of Memphis, TN; daughter, Vannessa Lane Watts of Hanceville, AL; son, James A. Middleton of Ellijay, GA; daughter, Vickie Lea McManus of McDonough, GA; brother, Arthur W. Thornton of La-Follette, TN; sister,  Suzanne lane of El Campo, TX; grandchildren: Ashley Adams, Daniel Adams, Aaron Adams, Phillip Adams, Adrian Adams, Joshua Adams, Avery Watts, Ryan McManus, Sean McManus, and Shelby McManus.  Many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held /Sunday, march 18, 2007 at 3 p.m. from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Jim Lane officiating.
