Mrs. geraldine “jerrie” goolsby

 

Mrs. Geraldine (better known as Jerrie) Goolsby, age 63, of River Road, Blairsville, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2992 in Hall County following a sudden illness.  Mrs. Goolsby was born on December 19, 1938 in Union County, the daughter of the late Lester Butt and the late Bertha Kendall Butt.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was the owner of Jerrie’s Avon Store for many years.  She was preceded in death by two daughters, Georgina Goolsby in 1968 and Judith Dyer Parker in 2000 and by a brother, Claude Butt.  Mrs. Goolsby was a member of the Philadelphia Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Goolsby are three daughters, Janie Dyer of Gainesville, Venessa Dyer of Lula, Mechelle Durance of Gainesville; three sons, David Davenport, Jerry Goolsby and Chris Goolsby, all of Blairsville; three sisters, Retha Dills, Maude Butt Lovell and Gladys Higgins, all of Blairsville; one brother, Sylvan Butt of Blairsville; thirteen grandchildren; three great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 24, 2002 at 2 pm from the Philadelphia Baptist Church with Rev. Tommy Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by Margie Chambers, Ella Battle and Luther Thomas.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Vester Dills, Buck Dills, Jonathan Dills, Michael Brewer, Aaron Dills, Jack McCloud, Dale Butt and Henry Hall.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

mr. john allen stoll

 

Mr. John Allen Stoll, age 53, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of Michigan, passed away Wednesday, March 20, 2002 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

MR. Stoll was born in Salano County, California, on Wednesday, March 24, 1948, a son of Harold Pierce and Joyce Cooper Pierce.  He served in the U.S. Navy and had been a switchman for the telephone company.  Mr. Stoll had been living in Blairsville for the past three years.  He was of the Baptist Faith.

Surviving are his mother and step-father, Joyce and William J. Stoll of Walnut Creek, California; his father, Harold Pierce of Citrus Heights, California; daughter, Maudie Marie Stoll of Vallejo, California; son, Jeffry Stoll of Bremerton, Washington; daughter, Lena Frazee of Castro Valley, California; step daughter, Christal Simon; two brothers, Michael Leon Stoll and William Robert Stoll, Jr.; two grandchildren also survive, along with many other relatives and friends.

No local services were held.

mrs. delories strong

 

Mrs. Delories Strong, age 56, of Sorghum Mill Run, Blairsville, GA, passed away March 12, 2002, at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta after surviving a stroke January 31, 2002, spending 2 weeks in Union General Hospital and 3 weeks in Piedmont Hospital due to the latest Staff Infection leading to heart and kidney failure.

Survived by husband, John; sister & brother-in-law, Linda & Edwin Butler of Blairsville; three daughters: Belinda, Brenda, & Barbara; seven grandchildren; two other sisters and one brother, who all live out of state.

Mrs. Strong was cremated and a private family service is to be held at a later date.

mr. max worth brackett

 

Mr. Max Worth Brackett, age 76, of Haralson Drive, Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Brackett was born on September 16, 1925 in Union County, the son of the late James Augustus Brackett and the late Lennie Hatchett Brackett.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was the owner of Max Brackett Used Cars for over thirty years.  He was preceded in death by a daughter, Angie Brackett Miles in 1980 and a brother, James A. Brackett, Jr. in 1997.  MR. Brackett was a member of the Allegheny Lodge #114 and a member of the Bray Methodist Church.

Surviving Mr. Brackett are his loving wife of fifty four years, Mary Jane Bridges Brackett of Blairsville; two daughters and one son-in-law, Linda C. Cason of Valdosta, J. Diane and Tommy Stephens of Blairsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Voe and Jack Henderson of Marietta; six grandchildren, Kevin and Colleen Cason, Clint Seabolt, Mary Beth Miles, Derek and Dana Stephens many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at 11 am from the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Robert Passmore officiating.  Special music was presented by Scott Lance and Patricia Cook.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Terry Hilton, Timmy Hilton, Roger Cobb, Gene Sprayberry, Ray Rogers, and James Bridges.  Interment followed in the Providence Methodist Cemetery with the Allegheny Masonic Lodge conducting graveside services.

mr. oscar leon burton

 

Mr. Oscar Leon Burton, age 72, of Boyscout Road, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2002 in the Crawford Long Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Burton was born on January 4, 1939 in Mt. Rainier, MD, the son of the late Oscar H. Burton and the late Mary E. Leftbridge Burton.  He was preceded in death by one son, Donald J. Burton in  2000.  Mr. Burton attended The House of Prayer Church.

Surviving Mr. Burton are his loving wife of fifty two years, Mary Frances Burton of Blairsville; three daughters, Mary Catherine Kalp of MD, Theresa Ann McBride of Blairsville, Cecilia Marie Ritter of Pensicola, FL; three sons, Leon F. Burton of Mt. Dora, FL, Charles Phillip Burton of Muscle Shoals, AL, Timothy J. Burton of Leesburg, FL; one sister, Catherine Sue Hervers of Daytona, FL; twelve grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at 1 pm from the Faith Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Brock and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by the Neely Family, Mike Kleczka and Aaron McBride.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ken McBride, Christopher Cook, Tim Burton, Jim Kalp, Kevin McBride, Leon Burton.  Interment followed in The House of Prayer Cemetery.

mrs. lorene payne taylor

 

Mrs. Lorene Payne Taylor, age 68, of Morganton, GA formerly of Union County passed away Thursday, March 21, 2002 in Gordon County Hospital in Calhoun, GA.

Mrs. Taylor was born March 24, 1933 in Union County, a daughter of the late Hershel and Callie (Self) Payne.  She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Carey and Terri Bentley of Andrews, NC; brother, Jesse Payne of Blairsville, GA; sister, Hattie Hixon of Calhoun, GA; nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 24, 2002 at 2 pm at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Mathis officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Bud Stover, David Stamey, Greg Stamey, Bobby Raper, Joe Raper and Ronnie Raper.  Interment was in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. earl george odom

 

Mr. Earl George Odom, age 61, of Odom Road, Blairsville, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2002 in the Union General Hospital following a sudden illness.  Mr. Odom was born on January 14, 1941 in Union County, the son of the late Gordon G. Odom and the late Christine Brown Odom.  Mr. Odom was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and had served as Superintendent of the Union County School System for sixteen years and was also a coach of the Union County Boys Basketball Teams for over fifteen years.  A member of the Young Cane Masonic Lodge and was named Regional Basketball Coach of the year 1969-70, 70-71, 72-73, and also Coach of the Year for track in 1970.  He was a Charter Member of the Blairsville Jaycees and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville.

Surviving Mr. Odom are his loving wife of forty years, Gwen Brown Odom of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Shari and Ed Rohrbough of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Jennifer Odom of Blairsville; one brother, Rex Odom of Blairsville; one sister, Louise Byers of Blairsville; two grandchildren, Billie Suzanne Odom and Alex Odom, both of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 20, 2002 at 4 pm from the First Baptist Church with Minister Terry Stuart officiating.  Special music was presented by the Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jeff Odom, Greg Odom Herbert Dyer, Bill Parker, Jim McAffee and Edward Breedlove.  Interment followed in the Confidence Methodist Cemetery.

mr. robert jan elting

 

Mr. Robert Jan Elting, age 52, of Blairsville, Georgia, formerly of Orlando, Florida, passed away Thursday, march 21, 2002.

Mr. Elting was born in Potsdam, New York on Thursday, March 31, 1949, a son of Robert Elting and Alma Taft Elting.  He had been living in Blairsville for the past five years.  Mr. Elting had been an entertainment industry leader in the Orlando area, being the owner of State Tech Production for 15 years.  He was a member of the Orlando Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his son, Jacob Justin Elting, of Blairsville; a brother, Kip Elting, and his father, Robert Elting, also survive, along with many friends.

Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, March 30, 2002 at 3 pm from Bird’s Nest Bed and Breakfast, located on Dockery Road in Blairsville.

Mrs. rose effie swanson

 

Mrs. Rose Effie Swanson, age 85, of the Murphy Hwy., Blairsville, GA, passed away on Monday, March 18, 2002, in the Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Swanson was born on Nov. 24, 1916, in Queens, NY, the daughter of the late Adolph Krumm and the late Norma DePhillippis Krumm.  Mrs. Swanson had made her home in Union County for the past five years.

Surviving Mrs. Swanson are one niece, Betty Winnie of New York; special friends, Mr. & Mrs. Jack Pyle and all of Stonehenge loving friends and family.

Memorial services were held on Thursday, March 21, 2002 at 2 p.m. from Stonehenge with Rev. Arvil Nelson officiating.  Her ashes will be scattered at a favorite spot of hers in the mountains at her request.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, memorials may be made to your favorite charity in Mrs. Swansons memory.
