nona gaye scearce

Nona Gaye Scearce, 78, of Blairsville, GA, died Thursday, March 21, 2013 at Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Born June 22, 1934, as the long awaited daughter to the late Emory Doyle Hubbard and Nellie Mullins Hubbard of Wise, VA, Nona Gaye grew up on the family farm as one of twelve children.  She preferred farm work to house work, and shared many treasured memories with her parents and siblings.  Nona Gaye graduated a year early from Wise County High School and moved away from the family farm to find work in Baltimore, MD, where she met her first husband Billy James McPherson.  They were married at the Brooklyn Church of God in Baltimore, MD, on April 13, 1953.  The couple had two children before moving to Washington County, MD where the landscape reminded Billy of his childhood home.  The young couple made Clearspring, MD their home and welcomed a third child, with whom they found completion in their family.  Nona Gaye worked as a nurse's aid at Western Maryland Hospital for many years.  She made many friends through her faithful attendance at the Boonesboro Church of God, where she was a member until 1976 when she and her husband Billy moved to Pineville, KY on Laurel Hill.  Billy James McPherson died in 1980, leaving Nona Gaye a widow at the age of 47.  She married Reverend Lee Messer and began a new life as a Pastor's wife.  Nona Gaye enjoyed her new role.  She taught and shared scriptures  with her young grandchildren.

Nona Gaye resumed work as a nurse's aid at the Pineville Hospital, where she met her dear friend Loretta Bingham.  Reverend Lee Messer died in 1997.  After becoming a widow twice, Nona Gaye found love once more in Reverend David Scearce who was also a widower and with whom she spent the remainder of her days in happiness in Blairsville, GA.  They were so much in love, and were the rare couple who were spiritually connected  first and then emotionally.  The two were married May 6, 2002 as they shared eleven sweet years together.

Nona Gaye enjoyed gardening, playing games, reading, and spending time with family and friends.  Nona Gaye was an avid poet and her poems fill volumes of her personal journals.  her poem, "The Midnight Hour" about the death of her first husband was published online.  Among her many talents, Nona Gaye was an excellent cook, and her chicken and dumplings are considered legendary among her family.  Her love of scripture and devotion to reading her Bible carried her through trying and merry times.  She kept records and photographs of the family that she held dear, and loved recounting humorous tales of her childhood on the farm and the mischief of her brothers.  Nona Gaye had a special affection for Disney films and Shirley Temple which made her feel, "like a child again," especially in her later years.  Nona Gaye is survived by her loving husband, Reverend David  Scearce, her three children Reverend Billy James McPherson, Jr and his wife, Sandra Jean McPherson of Falling Waters, WV,  Renee Newport and her husband, Danny Keith Newport of Ocala, FL, and Loretta McPherson McKinney of Ocklawaha, FL, her three step-children, David Scearce, Michael Scearce and his wife, Tonette Scearce, and Kimberly Pospisil and her husband, David Pospisil, and her seven grandchildren, Amy Lynn Toms of Ocala, FL, Gary Lee Toms and his wife, Daniella  Pecoraro Toms of Leesburg, VA, Jennifer Janine Newport and Patrick James Newport of Orlando, FL, Vanessa McPherson Stone and her husband, James William Stone, III of Falling Waters, WV, Billy James "BJ" McPherson, III of Falling Waters, WV, Catherine Ann McKinney, Frank Huston McKinney, II, Luke Wyatt McKinney, and Colby James McKinney of Ocala, FL, and, her eight great-grandchildren, Rozelynn Ivy McKinney and Kaelynn MacKenzie Held of Las Vegas, NV, Emma Margaret Stone, McPherson James Stone, Jude Atticus Stone, and Gabriel Stone of Falling waters, WV, Brianna Jasmine McPherson of Falling Water, WV, and Giordana Jaylee Toms of Leesburg, VA, her ten siblings Arlie Hubbard, Delbert Hubbard, Burton Hubbard, Alton Hubbard, Gerald Hubbard, Steve Hubbard, Franklin Hubbard, Emory Hubbard, Mary Elizabeth Caldwell, and Jane Sue Younker, her "adopted" family, Lester and Loretta Bingham and Melissa Bingham of Pineville, KY, and her many nieces and nephews.  Nona Gaye was preceded in death by her brother, William Scott Hubbard.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, march 29, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Cochran Funeral Home Blairsville, 41 Hunt-Martin St., Blairsville, GA.  Family will receive friends on Thursday, march 28, 2013 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday, March 29, 2013 from 11 a.m. to 2 pm. at Cochran Funeral Home Blairsville.  Please share your condolences and your fond memories with the Scearce family on our website, www.cochranfuneralhomes.com
