mrs. hazel thomas stroud

 

Mrs. Hazel Thomas Stroud, age 79, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, March 24, 2003, in Union County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Stroud was born Tuesday, November 27, 1923, in Union County and remained a lifelong resident.  She was the daughter of the late Will Thomas and Lillie Hemphill Thomas, and was also preceded in death by her brother, Cecil Thomas.  Mrs. Stroud worked as a seamstress in a clothing manufacturing business.

Surviving are her husband, Willard Stroud, of their home; and brother, John Sylvan Thomas, of Stone Mountain, Georgia; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 26, 2003, at 2:00 PM at the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Tom Ford officiating.  Music was provided by the Kelley Trio.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Shane Thomas, Cory Thomas, Calvin Horne, Loy Hamby, Charles Hemphill, and Charlie Gregory.  Interment was in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. john steele kapler

 

Mr. John Steele Kapler, age 73 of Pappy’s Plaza, Blairsville, formerly of Beach Haven, NJ and Vero Beach, FL passed away on Friday, March 28, 2003 at his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Kapler was born on May 17, 1929 in Jersey Shore, PA, the son of the late Amos W. Kapler Sr. and the late Adelaide Bartow Kapler.  He had retired form the City of Vero Beach.   He was a volunteer fireman with the Beach Haven, NJ fire department and was also a member of the Beach haven First Aid Squad.

Surviving Mr. Kapler are his loving wife of forty-three years, Madaline Locsos Kapler of Blairsville; one son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Yajaira Kapler of Blairsville; three daughters and two son-in-laws, Linda and Rick Akers of Tavares, FL, Cindy Hodal of Astor, FL, Julie and Brian Parsons of Trenton, TX; one brother, A.W. Kapler of Boynton, FL; one sister, Henrietta Margraf of Tuckerton, NJ; five grandchildren, Amanda Akers, Jessica Hodal, Geraldy Dunmar, Lissette Kapler and Kamila Kapler, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to N.E. GA Hospice or to a Hospice of your choice in Mr. Kapler’s memory.

mrs. mary m. sedwick

 

Mrs. Mary M. Sedgwick, age 69, of Blairsville, passed away on Thursday, march 27, 2003 in Union General Hospital after a brief illness.

Mrs. Sedgwick was born in Union County, October 24, 1933, a daughter of the late Hartzell and Ruby (Winkler) Fortenberry.  She had worked as Food Service manager with the Union County School system.  Mrs. Sedgwick was a member of Coosa United Methodist Church.  She was preceded in death by her first husband, Randall Sosebee in 1989.

Survivors include, her husband, David Sedgwick of Blairsville; sons, Tommy Sosebee of Blairsville, and Tim Sosebee of Hayesville, NC; sister, Sue Dyer of Blairsville; brothers, Verlin Fortenberry, and Wayne Fortenberry both of Blairsville; grandchildren, Randy Sosebee, Sasha Sosebee, Timmy Sosebee, and Teresa Dockery; great grandchildren, Tinsley Sosebee, Logan Sosebee and Riley Sosebee, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, March 30, 2003 at 3 p.m. at New Hope Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Kirk Henke and Rev. Lean McDonald officiating.  Music was by the New Hope Singers.  Pallbearers were Bryan Watson, Johnny Whitmore, Lester Chesser, Terry Sosebee, Joe Davis and David Hatcher.  Interment was in Coosa United Methodist Church Cemetery.

mr. john grady carney

 

Mr. John Grady Carney, age 87 of Alpharetta, died March 31, 2003.

He was born August 27, 1915 in Union County, Georgia, the son of the late John Carney and Josephine Dean Carney.  He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Blairsville, a member of Roswell Masonic Lodge #165.  He was a retired fence contractor and had lived in Fulton County since 1937.

Survivors include his wife, Neoni Jane Towe Carney, Alpharetta; sons and daughters-in-law, Lamar and Myra Carney of Roswell, Larry and Kitty Carney, Harold carney all of Alpharetta, Bobby and Diane Carney, Tommy and Sheila Carney all of Cumming; eight grandchildren; six great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 3, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Blairsville with Rev. Bud Sutton officiating.  Interment will be in the church cemetery.

mr. david wayne “john” baker

 

Mr. David Wayne (better known as John) Baker, age 64 of Young Harris Highway, Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, march 25, 2003 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Baker was born on October 23, 1939 in Bartow County, Ga.  The son of the late Bobby Toles and the late Sarah Elizabeth Baker.  Mr. Baker was of the Pentecostal faith.

Surviving Mr. Baker are one sister and brother-in-law, Nina and George Seymour of Blairsville, several cousins and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 28, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Liberty Hill Methodist Church with the rev. John Wynn, Rev. Charles Edwards and Rev. William Sisum officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: David Tanner, Gary Hone, Bob Ensley, Woody Grizzle, Glenn Stone and Chris Stone.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were Veral Colwell and Clayton Hancox.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.

mrs. norma artimicia poteet

 

Mrs. Norma Artimicia Poteet of Nottley Dam Road, Blairsville passed away on Wednesday, march 26, 2003 in the Fannin Regional Hospital following an extended illness.  She was a long time resident of Union County, having lived here for over seventy years.  She was preceded in death by her husband Thurston Poteet and a grandson, one sister and three brothers.  She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star.  Mrs. Poteet was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Poteet are two sons and daughter-in-laws, Don and Joy Poteet of Buchanan, GA; Fred and Jan Poteet of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Ella and Charles Forrester of Conyers, GA; six grandchildren, Ronald Poteet, Danny Forrester, Julie Rose, Dean Poteet and Kim Bilbo; ten great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Mt. Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Randy Hughes and Rev. Timothy Braun officiating.  Special music was presented by Glenda Newton.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Danny Forrester, Ronnie Poteet, Lee Poteet, Cody Stanford, Dean Poteet, Travis Bilbo and Jeff Kephart.  Interment followed in the Bethany Baptist Church Cemetery.

mrs. mildred schiavo dimartino

 

Mrs. Mildred Schiavo Dimartino, age 87 of Wild Hog Creek Terrace, Suches, GA passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2003 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Dimartino was born on December 23, 1915 in Haskel, NJ, the daughter of the late Anthony Schiavo and the late Stella Panucci Schiavo.  She was a member of the Eastern Star and Amram.  Mrs. Dimartino was a member of the First Baptist Church in Spring Hill, FL.  She was precede in death by her husband Ralph Dimartino in 1997.

Surviving Mrs. Dimartino are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Nick and Paula Dimartino of Suches, Ralph Dimartino of Coconut Grove, FL; two brothers, Anthony Schiavo of Clifton, NJ and Albert Schiavo of Belleville, NJ; three grandchildren, Nick Dimartino of Dayton Beach, FL,, Mark Dimartino of Pompano Beach, FL, Natalie Lafauci of Cumming, GA; one great granddaughter, Sofia Lafauci of Cumming, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 29, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the Chapel of the Brewer and Sons Funeral Home in Spring Hill, FL with the Rev. Chuck Fightmaster officiating.  Interment followed in the Florida Hills Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Brooksville, FL.  IN lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society in Mrs. Dimartino’s memory.
