rev. james milton rice

 

Rev. James Milton Rice, age 65, of Rice Drive, Blairsville, passed away on Sunday evening March 24, 2002 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Rice was born on September 9, 1936 in Liberty, NC, the son of the late John Oscar Rice and the late Myrtle Dean Rice.  He was an Air Force Veteran of the Korean War.  He had pastured several churches throughout his ministry in Union, Fannin, and Cobb counties.  At the time of his death, he had an active jail ministry at the Towns-Union Jail.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Louise Rice in 2000, a daughter Pam Palmer in 2001 and a brother, J.C. Rice in 1995.  Mr. Rice was a member of the Revival Baptist Church.

Surviving Rev. Rice are two daughters, Heather Smith of Michigan, Amy Rice Bowles of Blairsville; two sons, Mike Rice of Japan, Josh Rice of Kentucky; one brother and sister-in-law, Ernest and Nell Rice of Blairsville; three sisters and two brother-in-laws, Mildred Hardison of SC, Diane and Carl Eggleston of Cumming, Linda and Freddie Dodd of Stone Mountain; eight grandchildren, Bradley Brandon, Bret Stephen, and Gaige Rice, Cody Bowles, Amber Smith and Matthew Vichek, several cousins in Fannin County, several other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, March 29, 2002 at 2 pm from the Revival Baptist Church with the Rev. Ray Harper, Rev. Jerry Rice and Rev. Shannon Ketchens officiating.  Special music was presented by Brandon Davenport, Shannon Ketchens and Gloria Griggs.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Roy Phillips, Tony Young, Cody Bowles, Bradley Rice, Jeff Fortenberry, Stefan Arnold, Matthew Vicek and Brandon Rice.  Interment followed in Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery with the North Ga. Honor Guard conducting the graveside services.

mrs. christine king griggs

 

Mrs. Christine King Griggs, age 62, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Friday, March 29, 2002.

Mrs. Griggs was born on Sunday, May 7, 1939, a daughter of the late Jessie Victor King and Vinie May Plott King.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Griggs, in 1999; and two brothers: Brown King in 1994, and Clifford King in 1991.  Mrs. Griggs was employed in the dietary department at Union General Hospital.  She was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Mrs. Griggs is survived by her daughter and son-in-law: Christy and Parker Foster, of Blairsville; her granddaughter, Megan Foster, of Blairsville; brother, Jessie King, of Blairsville; brother and sister-in-law: Leon and Claudine King, of Morganton, GA; brother and sister-in-law: James and Wanda King, of Covington, GA; brother-in-law and wife, Neal and Lois Griggs, of Blairsville; and sister-in-law, Betty King, of Blairsville; nieces, nephews and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, march 31, 2002, at 2 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Randy Hughes, and Rev. Horace Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by Randy and Tammy Hughes, Jessica Miller, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Tommy Gamel, David Gowder, Danny Murphy, Mark Griggs, Don Murphy, and Steve Worley.  The following gentlemen served as an honorary escort to the family: Bobby Murphy, C.D. Griggs, and Junior Griggs.  Interment was in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was entrusted by the family for the arrangements.

mrs. doris (Dotti) brown stephens

 

Mrs. Doris (better known as Dotti) Brown Stephens, age 58, of Town Mtn. Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2002, in the Union General Hospital, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Stephens was born on Oct. 17, 1943 in Towns Co., the daughter of the late Ronald Brown and the late Bessie Holland Brown.  She had been an assistant librarian in the Union County School system for many years.  She was a lifelong resident of Towns and Union Counties.  Mrs. Stephens was a member of the New Harmony Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Stephens are her loving husband of forty years, Riley Stephens of Blairsville; one son, Greg Stephens of Blairsville; one sister, Wilma Ash of Young Harris; one brother, Brownie Brown of Blairsville; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Stephens were held on Saturday, March 30, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the Rich Cemetery with Rev. Chad Underwood officiating.  Special music was presented by Helen Marsh and Royce Killian.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Hubert Shook, James Postell, Jeff Hood, Bo Conley, J.E. Corn, Dorsey Dockery and Joe Dillard.  Interment followed in the Rich Cemetery.

noah william mcclure

 

Noah William McClure, age 67, of Murphy Highway, Blairsville, GA, died Sunday, March 24, 2002, at his home.

He was a native of Cherokee County, NC.  He had worked as a mechanic and for the Forest Service until he became disabled in 1963.  He was a son of the late Thomas and Amy Lovingood McClure and was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Loretta Mull McClure who died in 1994.

He is survived by one son, Warren William McClure of Blairsville, GA; one daughter and her husband, Loretta and Kevin Bock of Blairsville, GA; three brothers: Hadley McClure, Lloyd McClure and Bobby McClure, all of Blairsville, GA; two sisters: Pearle Richards of Morganton, GA and Imma Jean Little of Blairsville, GA; and three grandchildren: Katrina Lynn Brown, Tony William Brown and Katelynn Leeann Bock, all of Blairsville, GA.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m., Wednesday, march 27, 2002, in the Townson Rose Funeral Home Chapel in Murphy, NC.  The Rev. Charles Raper officiated.  Burial was in the Mt. Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery in Murphy, NC.  Pallbearers were: Eugene McClure, Jimmy McClure, Andy McClure, Levi McClure, Chris McClure and Matthew Raper.

mrs. joyce dyer

 

Mrs. Joyce Dyer, age 55, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, passed away Saturday, March 30, 2002 at her home following an extended illness.

She was born in Union County, Georgia, on Monday, September 2, 1946, a daughter of Luna Johnson Swain and the late Edward Swain.  Joyce was a homemaker and was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.  Preceding her in death was her father, Edward Swain; two sisters, Sarah Ann Swain and Jane Kitchens; a brother, Eddie Swain; and a son, Greg Moose.

Mrs. Dyer is survived by her husband, Arlen Dyer of Blairsville; mother, Luna Swain also of Blairsville; daughter and her fiancÚ, Nary Ann Dyer and Junior Gaddis of Blairsville; son, Timmy Moose of Blairsville; mother through Christ, Napper Moose of Suches, Georgia; friend, Charles Moose, of Gainesville, Georgia; niece and her husband, Sharon and Chris Furby, and their son, Evan of Hayesville, North Carolina; niece and her husband, Sonya and Stacy Ingram and their sons, Aleck and Jake, also of Hayesville; nephew and his wife, B.J. and Abby Kitchens of Hayesville.  Many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Monday, April 1, 2002 at 2 pm from Choestoe Baptist Church with Rev. Dick Stillwell and Rev. James Geer officiating.  Special music was presented by Choestoe Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Stacy Ingram, Chris Furby, Perry Dyer, Eddie Dyer, Eddy Alexander, and Larry Swanson.  Interment followed in Choestoe Cemetery.

mrs. thelma l. hill helton

 

Mrs. Thelma L. Hill Helton, age 83, of Collins Dr., Gainesville, formerly of Blairsville, passed away on Friday, March 29, 2002, in the North East GA Medical Center, following an extended illness.  Mrs. Helton was born on May 21, 1918, in Union County, the daughter of the late Benjamin Hill and the late Bessie Nichols Hill.  She was a lifelong resident of Union and Hall Counties.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur J. Helton, in 1974; two sons, Arthur, Jr. and Willie Paul Helton; one daughter, Barbara Ann Helton.  Mrs. Helton was a member of the Community Chapel Church of God in Gainesville, and had also attended the Fairview Baptist Church when she lived in Blairsville.

Surviving Mrs. Helton are one daughter, Betty Helton Taylor of Blairsville; three sons and two daughters-in-law: martin and Millie Helton of Roseburg, OR, Tommy and Jannie Helton of Gainesville, and Marcus Helton of Flowery Branch; one sister: Unabell Hamlet of Sisterville, WV; ten grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 1, 2002, at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tommy Jones, Rev. Michael Anderson and rev. Tommy Helton officiating.  Special music was presented by Bernice Collins.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Rodney, Glynn, Ricky, and Anthony Helton, Joseph Anderson and Junior Taylor.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
