johnnie c. brown

 

Mr. Johnnie C. Brown, age 82, of Lower Trackrock Rd., Blairsville, GA passed away on Monday, March 29, 2004 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Brown was born on June 7, 1921 in Towns County, the son of the late William (Bill) Brown and the late Emma Brookshire Brown.  He had retired from the Standard Telephone Company where he was a linesman.  He was a veteran of the US Army of WWII.  Mr. Brown was a lifelong resident of Union County and was a member of the Standard Telephone Pioneer Club and was a member of the Allegheny Masonic Lodge #114 F&AM.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Faye Collins Brown, in 1997.  Mr. Brown was a member and deacon of Old Liberty Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Brown are two daughters and one son in law, Gwen Odem of Blairsville, Rachel and Charles R. Brackett of Blairsville; three sons and daughters in laws, jack and Norma Brown of Blairsville, Dale and Kathy Brown of Gainesville, Chris and Ida Brown of Dahlonega; one brother, Thomas Brown of Blairsville; twelve grandchildren, Steve Odom, Shari Rohorbough, Renee Brown, Jason Thomas, Lori Brackett, Rebecca Brackett, Curtis Brown, Jessica Brown, Christine Brown, Lora Brown, Kimberly Souther and Jeannie Marie Roundtree; six great grandchildren, Billie and Alec Odom, Cheyenne Ramey, Miranda Roundtree, Anna Kate Souther and William Clayton Souther; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 2:00 pm from the Old Liberty Baptist Church with Rev. Harley Hunter and Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating. Special music was presented by the Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Steve Odom, Jason Brown, Curtis Brown, Ben Skinner, Jerry Cook and Calvin Collins.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were the employees of Standard Telephone Company.  Interment followed in the church cemetery with Allegheny Lodge #114 F&AM conducting Masonic Rites.

blanche kelley

 

Mrs. Blanche Kelley, age 81, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004, in the Union County Nursing Home.

Mrs. Kelley was born in Union County, October 30, 1922, a daughter of the late Bryan and Josie (Reece) Walsh.  She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.  Mrs. Kelley was preceded in death by sisters, Bobbie Walsh and Polly Roberts and her husband, Paul Kelley.

Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Clay Robinson of Austell, GA and Elaine and Terry Queen of Blairsville, GA; sons and daughters-in-law, Ronnie and Judy Kelley of Blairsville, GA and Michael and Barbara Kelley of Columbus, GA; sister, Opal Patton of Blairsville, GA; six grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 2:00 pm, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Brent Chatham and Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville was in charge of the arrangements.

gladys lucille nelson brown

 

Mrs. Gladys Lucille Nelson Brown, age 87, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2004 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Brown was born in Union County, Georgia, on Friday, April 21, 1916, a daughter of the late Lonnie Seth Nelson and Tempie Collins Nelson.  She was a homemaker, and a member of Old Liberty Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by a son, Roger Brown, who passed away in 1969; and her husband, Harmon Brown, who passed away in 1995.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Junior and Jerri Brown of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Lucille Brown of Clarkesville; daughter, Willene Wade of Blairsville; and son and daughter-in-law, Carroll and Martha Brown of Blairsville; four sisters: Mary Seabolt, Idell Nix, and Lillie Everett all of Blairsville, and Pearl Hutson of Ballground, Georgia; Nine grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren also survive, along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were scheduled for Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at 2:00 pm, at Old Liberty Baptist church, with Rev. Harley Hunter and Rev. Jerry Young officiating.  The body laid instate at the church on Tuesday starting at 1:30 p.m.  The following gentlemen were requested to serve as pallbearers: Mike Brown, Franklin Brown, Alan Brown, Alex Wade, Nelson Wade, Tim Brown, Chris Brown, and Ronnie Whited.  Burial was in the church cemetery.  Visitation was at the funeral home on Monday evening after 6 p.m. with the family especially meeting with friends from 6 until 9 p.m. on Monday.

annie jo shook dyer

 

Mrs. Annie Jo Shook Dyer, age 70, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, April 2, 2004.

Mrs. Dyer was born in Towns County, Georgia, on Saturday, October 28, 1933, a daughter of Ruby Gibson Shook, of Blairsville, and the late Joseph Milton Shook.  She was a homemaker and lived most of her life in Union County.  Mrs. Dyer was a member of First Baptist Church of Blairsville, The Christian Women’s Association, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and The Order of the Eastern Star.  Besides her father, she had been preceded in death by a brother, Harold Shook.

Survivors include her husband, Blueford Marion Dyer, of the home; her mother, Ruby Gibson Shook, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Wayne Hedden, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Jounida and Keith Porter of Jefferson, Georgia; granddaughter, Leslie Hedden; grandsons: Luke Hedden, Blaze Porter and Sky Porter.  Brother, Hubert Shook, of Blairsville; sister, June Gibby, of Young Harris; several nieces, nephews, and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, April 4, 2004, at the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Danny Parris and Rev. Keith Jones officiating.  Special music was presented by Neil and Patsy Elird, Terry Hooper, Lillie Vee Adams, and Stephen Adams.  Serving as pallbearers were Brian Lance, Scott Stephens, Charles Tallent, Justin Lance, Marty Gibby, and Aaron J. Shook.  Burial was in Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.

mrs. joyce branson ridenour

 

Mrs. Joyce Branson Ridenour, age 77, of Blairsville, Georgia passed away Sunday, April 4, 2004 at the Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Ridenour was a native of Florida and had lived in this area since 1980.  She was a member and elder at Mountain Presbyterian Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband, the late Charles Ridenour, who passed away in 1989.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, April 13, 2004 at 11:00 am at the Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville with Rev. Travis Adams officiating.

bessie mae payne gilreath

 

Mrs. Bessie Mae Payne Gilreath, age 84, of Suches, Georgia passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue Ridge, Georgia.

Mrs. Gilreath was born in Union County, Georgia on Friday, march 26, 1920, a daughter of the late Ed Payne and Emma Harkins Payne.  She was a homemaker and lifelong resident of Union County.  Mrs. Gilreath was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Suches.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Gilreath; a grandson, Mike Gilreath; sister, Mattie Plott; two brothers, J.P. Payne and most recently, Willie “Bill” Payne.

Survivors include a son, Jurl Gilreath, of Suches; a granddaughter, Angela Dodd of Calhoun, Georgia; great grandson, Avery Dodd, also of Calhoun; sister, Bertha Garner, of Blairsville; brother, Hobert Payne of Blairsville; sister, Martha Hawkins, of Winder, Georgia; sister, Nora Evans of Douglasville, Georgia; sister Mary Hensley, of Blairsville; sister, Grapelle Rich, also of Blairsville; several nieces, nephews and many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 2, 2004 in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hood and Rev. Waymon Lovell officiating.  Special music was presented by The Corinth Quartet.  The following gentlemen served as Pallbearers, T.J. Plott, Paul Garner, Jerry Payne, Billy Payne, Gary Payne, Eddie Rich and Roy Johnson.  Burial was in Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.

merrell collier elliott

 

Merrell Collier Elliott, 74, passed away on march 23, 2004.  He was born on February 13, 1930 in Atlanta, GA to Homer and Algene Elliott.  Mr. Elliott was a graduate of The McBurney School in New York, New York.  He graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in forestry.

He was a former resident of Wilmington, NC where he worked for Southern Imports and later Southco, Inc.  While living there, Mr. Elliott was active in St. Andrews-Covenant Presbyterian Church.  He retired to Blairsville, GA and was a member of Mountain Presbyterian Church.  He loved gardening, sporting events, travel and being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Fields Elliott; his brother, Henry Homer Elliott, Jr.; his parents, Homer and Algene Elliott.  He is survived by his children, Lynn Tally of Kemp, TX; Doug Coulter of Norman, OK; Missy Minkin of Anniston, AL; and Sally Zinter of Katy, TX; sister, Genie Sime of Blairsville,
GA; sister, Charlotte McCord of Atlanta, GA; 9 grandchildren and 1 great-grandson.

A memorial service will be held on march 27 at 12:00 P.M. at Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville, GA.  In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the charity of your choice.
