Mr.
Ulric, “Eric” Spiva, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Sunday, March
21, 1999
in Union General
Hospital in Blairsville.
Mr. Spiva
was born on Saturday, February 14, 1925, in Union
County, Georgia, a son of the late Guy Cook
Spiva and
Bessie lee Duckworth Spiva. He was a
lifelong resident of this area, and was a retired builder.
MR. Spiva was a member of Shady Grove
Methodist Church, and Allegheny Masonic Lodge, #114, F&AM. He authored the song, “I Wouldn’t Change It
If I Could, made famous by Ricky Scaggs.
A son, Stephen Franklin Spiva, passed away in 1973.following an
extended
illness
Surviving
are his wife, LaWanda Reece Spiva, of the home; son, Walter Eugene
Spiva, of
Hiawassee; son and daughter in law, Fred and Doris Spiva, of Columbia,
SC; son
and daughter in law,, jerry and Deborah Spiva, of Blairsville; and
daughter and
son in law, Linda Rose and Bill Carlyle, of Blairsville; son, Ric
Spiva, of
Blairsville; daughter and son in law, Ruth and Rex Patterson of
Hayesville;
daughter and son in law, Deborah and Junior Carroll of Blairsville;
daughter
and on in law, Peggy and Church Patrick of Brasstown, NC; brothers:
John Spiva,
of Canton, Larry Spiva of jasper, and Leon Spiva, of Blairsville;
sister,
Dorothy Spiva of Savannah, 30 grandchildren and 30 great grandchildren
also
survive along with many friends.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, March 23, 1998 at 2 p.m. from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Willis Garrett officiating. The Eulogy was presented by his son, Gene
Spiva, and a poem was read by his daughter Linda Carlyle.
Special music was presented by John and
Clayton Nix, Edward Mashburn, Kennith Young, Joe Payne, Sonya Spiva,
and Coleen
Judy. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Geoff Spiva, Alan Spiva, Jon Spiva, Jeff Spiva, Brian
Spiva, Amos
Patterson, Derek Cook, and Jason Patrick.
Interment was in Shady Grove Methodist Church Cemetery.

Mr.
Wendall O. Mashburn, age 72, of Gainesville, GA, formerly of
Blairsville, GA,
passed away Wednesday, March 31, 1999 following an extended illness.
Mr.
Mashburn was born in Union County, Georgia, on Monday, August 9, 1926,
a son of
the late Gurley Mashburn and Eula Hood Mashburn. Mr.
Mashburn was a veteran of the U.S. Army
and U.s. Navy. He was a welder.
Surviving
are his wife, Dorothy Owenby Mashburn, of the home; daughters: Thersha
Mashburn
Major, of Oakwood, and Judy Mashburn Skelly, of Los Angeles, CA; sons:
Morris
Mashburn and Mike Mashburn, both of Blairsville,, and Jerry Mashburn of
Oakwood
and Jack Mashburn of Gainesville; sisters: Joyce Whetsell, of
Charleston, SC
and Gennie Brewer, of Jedburg, SC; 10 grandchildren and 4 great
grandchildren also
survive.
Funeral
services were held Friday, April 2, 1999 at 11 a.m.
from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Leon
Henderson and Rev. Danny Parris officiating.
Special music was presented by Martha Cone and Carole Shupe. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Matthew Mashburn, Adam Mashburn, Jody Mashburn, Justin
Seltrecht,
David Paul, and Adam Kall. Interment was
in Ebenezer Baptist Church Cemetery, with military honors by North
Georgia
Honor Guard.

Mr.
Charles Conley, age 78, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday,
March
27, 1999 in Union General Hospital in
Blairsville.
Mr. Coley
was born in Union County, Georgia, on Friday, June
4, 1920, a son of the late John Ralph Conley and Estelle Rich Conley. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served
during WWII, in the army air
corps. Mr. Conley was a lifelong
resident of this area and had been Postmaster for Blairsville for 31
years. He was a member and Deacon of
First Baptist Church of Blairsville. Mr.
Conley taught Sunday school for 36 years.
He had been preceded in death by his father, John Ralph Conley,
his
mother, Estelle Rich Conley, daughter, Linda Gail hunter, brothers:
John and
Bobby Conley.
Surviving are
his wife, Nettie Burch Conley, of Blairsville; son and daughter in law,
Bo and
Vivian Conley; son and daughter in law, David and Nancy Conley; son and
daughter in law, Larry and Charlotte Conley, all of Blairsville; and
brother,
Jim Conley, of Blairsville, sisters, Francis Harrison of Fritzgerald
and
Saranell Patterson of Blairsville; 9 grandchildren and 3 great
grandchildren
also survive.
Funeral
services were held Monday, March 29, 1999 at 11 a.m.
from the First Baptist Church of Blairsville, with Rev. Bethel Buchanan
and
Rev. Danny Parris officiating.
Special
music was presented by First Baptist Quartet and
Nelson and Mildred LeCroy. The following
gentlemen served as pallbearers: Keith Conley, Jonathon Conley, Jason
Hunter,
Kevin Conley, Cory Conley, Andy Conley, and Josh Conley.
Interment was in Union memory Gardens
Cemetery.

Mahaffey Genet, age 81, passed away March 20, 1999, at McKinley Life
Center in
Canton, Ohio. She was a native of
Blairsville, GA.
She is
survived by: sons: James Genet of Canton, Ohio, and Jeffrey Genet of
Louisville, Kentucky; daughter: Bonnie Jean VanDuzer of Coral Springs,
Fla.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at the Hahn Funeral Home,

Rev. Howard Powell officiating.
Interment was at Greenland Memorial Park, Barberton, Ohio.

Mrs.
Betty Barnes, age 64, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday,
March 30,
1999 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs.
Barnes was born Saturday, April 29, 1934, in Union
County, Georgia, a daughter of the late George Stephens and Sallie
Young
Stephens. She was a homemaker and a
lifelong resident of union County. Mrs.
Barnes was a member of Liberty Baptist Church.
Surviving are
her husband, Oris Barnes, of Blairsville; son and daughter in law, Ted
and Opal
Barnes, of Blairsville; daughter and son in law, Elaine and Caroll
Dotson of
Young Harris, GA; and daughter and son in law, Lavita and Mike
Totherow, of
Blairsville; brothers: J.C. and Mack Stephens, of Blairsville; 6
grandchildren
and 3 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, April 1, 1999 at 2 p.m.
from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Rev. Rick
Rogers
and Rev. Ray Potts officiating.
Special
music was presented by The Kelley Trio. The
following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Carl Dotson, Johnny McCoy,
Billy
Payne, Hoyt Stephens, Brandon Dotson, and Emanuel Legg.
Interment was in Union Memory Gardens
