Mr. Jewel
“Joe” Dixon Payne, age 68, of Blairsville, passed away Sunday, April 5,
1998 in
Lanier Park Hospital, Gainesville, GA.
He was a native of Union County, son of the late Norvie and
Laura Rector
Payne. He was a member of Pleasant Hill
Baptist Church and had retired from the Chrysler Corporation.
Survivors
include, Mrs. Betty Hood Payne, of the home; daughter, Lisa Paige Stoke
of
Cincinnati, Ohio; brothers, Arnold, Herol, and J.W. Payne, all of
Blairsville;
sisters, Gladys Freeman, Blairsville, and Hazel Smith, Morganton;
grandchildren,
Ashley and Hannah Stoker, Cincinnati, Ohio.
Several nephews, nieces, and other relatives also survive.
Funeral
services were held Tuesday, April 7th at 2 p.m. from the Cochran
Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Horace Potts and Rev. Steve Youngblood officiating. Music was by Kenneth and Elaine Young.
Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Roney
Jones, age 65, of Blairsville, passed away Tuesday, April 7, at the
Copper
Basin Hospital, Copperhill, Tennessee, following an extended illness. Mr. Jones was born in Union County, the son
of Arthur Zelve and Carrie Rhodes Jones.
Mr. Jones was a member of the Young Cane Church of God.
He is
survived by two brothers, James Arnold Jones and Johnny Jones, both of
Blairsville. Several nieces and nephews
also survive.
Funeral
services were held from the chapel of the Cochran Funeral Home at 2
p.m.,
Thursday with the Rev. Terrell Jones and Rev. William Sissum
officiating. Music was by Kenneth and
Elaine Young. Interment was in the Liberty
Hill Methodist
Cemetery, Fannin County.

Mrs.
Vonnie B. Garrett, age 77, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday,
April
15, 1998 in Windy Hill Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.
Mrs.
Garrett was born in Cherokee County, North Carolina on January 18,
1922, a
daughter of the late Julius Beaver and Matty Abernathy Beaver. She lived most of her life in the Union
County area and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church and a member of
the
Order of the Eastern Star, #304, Blairsville Chapter.
She was the widow of the late Jake Garrett.
Surviving
are her daughter, Delores Patton, of Marietta; son, Don Garrett of
Cartersville, Georgia; sister, Verdie Ledford of Blairsville; four
grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services were held Wednesday, April 8, 1998 at 2 p.m. from the chapel
of
Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Vernon Davenport and Rev.
Loys
Waters officiating. Special music was
presented by The Faith Singers. Interment
was in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

Mr. Hans
Schmidt, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Wednesday, April
1, 1998 in
Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mr. Schmidt
was a native of Zaandam, Holland and was born on February 4, 1924 a son
of the
late Walter Schmidt and Grietje Boerendans Schmidt.
He was a retired engineer and had lived in
this area of Blairsville since 1991.
Surviving
are three children, Erik Schmidt of Edmonton, Alberta, Werner Schmidt
of
Toronto, Ontario, and Rene Schmidt of Brighton, Ontario; brother, Georg
Schmidt
of Zella-Mehlis, Germany; four grandchildren also survive.
Private
memorial services were held.

Mrs.
Mildred Cynthia Baker, age 93, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Friday,
April 3, 1998 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.
Mrs. Baker
was born in Texas County, Oklahoma, on July 6, 1904, a daughter of the
late
James Meacham and Jessie Street Meacham.
She was a retired LPN and had lived in this area since 1997,
coming here
from Orlando, Florida. Mrs. Baker
attended The Assembly of god Church (sic).
Surviving
are daughter, Gertrude Stephens, of Leesburg, Florida; son, George
Baker of
Milwaukee, Wisconsin; son, Carl Baker of Blairsville; brother, Sam
Meacham of
Washington State; sisters, Jessie Wikstrom of Washington State,
Marjorie Schlue
of Oregon, and Jane Fritz, of Colorado; eight grandchildren, fourteen
great
grandchildren, and one great great grandchild also survive.
