mrs. vesta mae thomas cearley

 

Mrs. Vesta Mae Thomas Cearley, age 93, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away Monday, April 8, 2002, in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mrs. Cearley was born on Thursday, September 10, 1908, a daughter of the late Sumner Thomas and Mintie Nicholson Thomas.  She was a homemaker and was the widow of the late James Alvin Cearley.  Mrs. Cearley was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Cearley is a son, T.J. Cearley, of Chatsworth, GA; and special friend, Glenda Taylor, of Chatsworth; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 10, 2002, at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with rev. Loys Waters officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Marcus Sosebee, Scott Thompson, Keith Taylor, Anthony Taylor, Doug Hughes, and Glen Davenport.  Interment was in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. mark hess herr

 

Mr. Mark Hess Herr, age 72, of the Blue Ridge Hwy., Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, April 9, 2002, in the Emory University Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Herr was born on June 30, 1924, in Lancaster, PA, the son of the late John Herr and the late Elizabeth Hess Herr.  He was a veteran of the US Air Force in WWII.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Paul Herr, in 2000, and by a wife, Shirley Herr, in 1993.  Mr. Herr was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church where was a 3rd degree Knight.

Surviving Mr. Herr are his loving wife of seven years, Therese Mainville Herr, of Blairsville; eight sons: John Herr of Ocala, FL, James Mark Herr, of Beverly Beach, MD, Norman D. Herr, of Edgewater, MD, Michael Herr, of Cleveland, TX, Vincent Herr of Annapolis, MD, Brett D. Herr, Clifford Herr and Andrew Herr, all of Blairsville; three daughters: Bonnie Scotten of Gainesville, MD, Shirley Brodsky of Chicago, ILL, and Robin Kehoe of Hiawassee; three stepsons: Roger Belgau of Palaka, FL, Joseph Dinatale, Jr. and Anthony Dinatale, both of Blairsville; two brothers: Mural Herr of PA, Glenn Herr of Naples, FL; two sisters: Betty Phiefer of Metter, GA, Elma Groff, of CO; twenty four grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Services for Mr. Herr were held on Friday, April 12, 2002, at 11 a.m., from St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church with Rev. Balappa Selvaraj officiating.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

mr. ed townsend

 

Mr. Ed Townsend, age 94, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2002 in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.

Mr. Townsend was born in Union County, Georgia, on Thursday, April 25, 1907, a son of the late Jim Townsend and Mollie Hood Townsend.  He was a sawmiller and was a member of Shady Grove Methodist Church.  Mr. Townsend had been preceded in death by his wife, Dovie Seabolt Townsend, who passed away May 29, 1997.

Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Mamie and Ray Rogers, of Blairsville, son and daughter-in-law, Hoyt and Phyllis Townsend of Blairsville; son and daughter-in-law, Roy and Ida Townsend, also of Blairsville; six sisters, Bessie Saxon of Marietta, Sarah Robertson of Flowery Branch, Margie Butt of Blairsville, Betty Orr of Flowery Branch, Jeanette Vest of Blairsville, Grapell Thompson of Flowery Branch, four brothers, Dillard Townsend of Blairsville, Tom  Townsend of Cumming, Georgia, Odell Townsend of Flowery Branch, and Robert Townsend of Jonesboro, Georgia; grandchildren, Terry Rogers, Kay Bradley, both of Blairsville; Debbie Royston of Knoxville, TN and Tommy Townsend, of Nashville, NT; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Friday, April 12, 2002 at 2 pm from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville with Rev. Jimmy Rogers and Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  Special music was presented by Tommy Townsend and Patricia Cook.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Milton Bradley, Terry Rogers, Buck Kuykendall, John Nix, Mark Rogers, and Tim Hunter.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

mr. james berry brown, jr.

 

Mr. James Berry Brown, Jr., age 65, native and lifelong resident of Blairsville, GA, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mr. Brown was born on Friday, September 4, 1936, in Union County, GA, a son of Jim Brown and Mary Seabolt Brown.  He was a very hard worker in every aspect of the farming business, and always loved the outdoors.  Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his father, Jim; a brother, Johnie Edward Brown, and another brother, Louis Herman Brown.  Mr. Brown was a member of New Harmony Baptist Church.

Surviving are his best friend, Annie Maude Vitale, of Blairsville; his mother, Mary Seabolt Sullens, of Blairsville, three children: Jimmy Brown, David Brown, and Betty Ann Cruse, all of Blairsville; three sisters: Ola Mae Hughes of Blairsville, Cathy Fuller, of Gainesville, and Elouise Brown, also of Gainesville, three brothers: Paul Brown and Herbert Brown, both of Blairsville, GA, and Mark Brown, of Gainesville; nine grandchildren and many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, April 14, 2002, at 2 p.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Tommy Jones, and Rev. Michael Anderson officiating.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Charlie Hughes, Ronnie Hughes, Ricky Helton, Mack Brown, Mike Brown, Jr., Ernie Brown, and Adrian Hughes.  The following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Ricky Boland, Horace Underwood, Bill Fuller, and Junior Brown.  Interment was in Owltown Church of God Cemetery.
