cecil lance, jr.

 

Mr. Cecil Lance Jr. age 77 of Scott Lance Drive Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2006 in the Union County Nursing Home following an extended illness.  Mr. Lance was born on July 13, 1928 in Akron, OH, the son of the late Cecil Lance Sr. and the late Willie Hill Lance. He was a lifelong resident of Union County. He was a veteran of the US Army of the Korean War and had participated in several major campaigns. Mr. Lance operated the first Radio Shack in Blairsville for several years.  One of his favorite hobbies was making music with his friends and his passion for musical instruments.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Drake Lance in 1998 and by his stepmother, Bonnie Lance in 1999. Mr. Lance was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and served as Deacon for almost fifty years.

Surviving Mr. Lance are one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Tammie Lance of Blairsville, one brother, Jack Lance of Blairsville, two grandchildren, Amber and Becky Lance of Blairsville, several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

 Funeral services were held on Monday April 23, 2006 at 2 pm from Antioch Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy Seay and Rev. B.A. Buchanan officiating.  Special music was presented by Kim Thomas and Lita Gowder.  The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Rick Davenport, Phil Nichols, Mike Stephens, Ricky Seay, Steve Drake and Jack Lance Jr. The following gentleman served as honorary pallbearers, Jack Drake, Bill Drake, Harry Lee Colwell, Charles Hill, Bud Nichols, Gerald George, Vick Vickery and Ray Durkee.  Interment followed in the church cemetery with the North GA. Honor Guard conducting military honors.

nelson anderson

 

Mr. Nelson Anderson, age 73, of Blue Ridge Hwy Blairsville, passed away on Sunday, April 23, 2006 in the Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville following an extended illness.  Mr. Anderson was born on Jan.24, 1933 in Union County, the son of the late Lee Anderson and the late Jessie Sosebee Anderson.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County.  He was an electrician and plumber by trade.  He was preceded in death by his brother, T.J. Anderson in 2005.  Mr. Anderson was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist church.

Surviving Mr. Anderson are his loving wife of fifty-two years, Nellie Ruth Ross Anderson of Blairsville, three sons and two daughter-in-laws, David and Lori Anderson of Boca Raton, FL, Ronnie and Sharon Anderson of Blairsville, Jerry Anderson of Blairsville, two sisters and one brother-in-law, Grapell Brown of Blairsville, Betty Lou and J.B. King of Blairsville, one brother and sister-in-law, Leroy and Sarah Anderson of Blairsville, four grandchildren, Brandon, Briana, Cody and Raven Anderson, one great-Grandchild, Jaiden Anderson, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday April 26, 2006 at 2 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon Henderson officiating.  Special music was presented by Ned Wilcoxin, Kelley Brewer and Howard Brys. The following gentleman served as pallbearers, Brandon Anderson, Charles Turner, Larry King, Raymond King, Steve Anderson, Michael Anderson, B.L. Anderson and Tony Anderson.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove Baptist church cemetery.

william a. “w.a.” winkler

 

Mr. William A. “W.A.” Winkler, age 74, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Sunday, April 16, 2006 at  his home.  Mr. Winkler was born Wednesday, September 23, 1931 in White County, Georgia, a son of the late Albert Winkler and Beulah Jackson Winkler.  He had lived in the Blairsville area for 42 years, and was of the Baptist faith.  He was preceded in death by daughter, Karen Winkler; step-daughter, Christine Pickelsimer; and step-son, Winford “Pete” Hedden.

Survivors include his wife, Florence Brown Winkler, of the home; step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Susie and Ron Winker; step-son, Herbert Hedden; step-daughter, Martha Anderson; step-son and step-daughter-in-law, Terry and Edna Hedden; step-daughter and step-son-in-law Lucy and Buddy Burnette; step-daughter and step-son-in-law, Joann and Ned Wilcoxon; son and daughter-in-law, William and Donna Winkler; daughter and son-in-law, Katrina and Dwayne Henson, all of Blairsville; sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Billy Criswell, of Covington, Georgia; fourteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren also survive, along with many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, April 19, 2006 at 2 p.m., from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Ned Wilcoxon, Rev. Jerry Johnson, and Rev. Jonathan Hood officiating.  Special music will be presented by John Nix and friends, and Josh Dills.  The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as pallbearers:  Tommie “Hoyt” Gray, J.M. Dyer, Verlen Fortenberry, Shane Burnette, Tom Davis, and Dwayne Henson.  The following gentlemen have been selected to serve as honorary escort to the family: Terry Hedden, Jack Brown, L.J. Brown, and Larry Henderson.  Burial will be in Coosa United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 until 9 p.m. on both Monday and Tuesday nights.

boyd leon lancaster

 

Mr. Boyd Leon Lancaster, age 79, of Blairsville, passed away Monday, April 17, 2006 following lung surgery.  Boyd grew up in Cobb County, graduating from Austell High School in 1943.  He immediately enlisted in the Army and was enrolled in the Army Specialized Training Program at Clemson University before serving a year in Germany.  He graduated from Emory University School of Business with high distinction in 1950 and began a career in sales.  In 1971 he started Boyd Lancaster Insurance Agency and enjoyed building it into a prosperous business before retiring in 1989.

He is survived by his wife, Kathryn, of 57 years; daughter Lynn and son-in-law Eric Wagner; daughter Miriam and son-in-law George Earley; grandson Patrick and Jody Earley and Ben Wagner; sister Sibyl and brother-in-law Claude Wheeler and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Cochran Funeral Home on Saturday, April 22, 2006, at 3 p.m.  Visitation with the family is from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Mr. Willie Lane, age 63 of Blairsville, GA passed away Sunday, April 9, 2006 at Piedmont Hospital.

Survivors, including his mother, are daughter Barbara Lane of Blairsville; son, Brian Lane of Blairsville; grandsons, Eric and Clint Chapman on Minooka, IL, Michael Lane of panama City beach, FL; granddaughters, Desiree Chapman of Blairsville, Samantha Fountaine of Minooka; great-granddaughter, Megan Chapman, Ariana LaFlame, and Hailey Burch; brother and sister-in-law, Del and Victoria Lane and Sally lane of Sevierville, TN; sister and brother-in-law, Ola and Ron Vanek of Burbank, IL; brother and sister-in-law, Jacque and Al Montreuil of Thomaston, GA; many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Thursday, April 13, 2006 at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Interment followed in Union Memory Gardens.  Serving as pallbearers were Phillip Lane, Del lane, Stanley lane, John Lane, Brian Lane, Eric Chapman, and Clinton Chapman.

marion annn pringle

 

Mrs. Marion Ann Pringle, age 94, of Blairsville, passed away on Friday, April 21, 2006 in the Blue Ridge Health Care Center following a brief illness.  Mrs. Pringle was born on Nov. 2, 1911 in Milwaukee, WI, the daughter of the late James Clancy and the late Elizabeth Clancy.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Pringle in 1976 and by a son in law, Sam Ivey in 2005.  Mrs. Pringle was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

Surviving Mrs. Pringle are one son, Richard Pringle of Clearlake, CA, one daughter, Charlene Ivey of Ellijay, GA, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  Interment will follow in Sun City, Arizona.  In lieu of flowers if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Mrs. Pringle’s memory.

cecil woodrow collins

 

Cecil Woodrow Collins died the morning of April 22, 2006 at NE Georgia Medical Center.  He was 92.

Cecil was born September 26, 1913 in Union County Georgia the son of Francis Thurmond “Bob T.” and Mary Viola Collins.  Cecil grew up near Blairsville where he graduated from Blairsville High School in 1931 and received an Associates degree from Young Harris College in 1933.  He assumed the position of Clerk with the newly formed CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) after graduation, and from there he went to the US Coast Guard, where he served as a “90-day-wonder” Lt. JG officer during the second World War.  He remained in active duty until 1945 and continued as a reserve officer until his discharge in 1955.  Beginning in 1946, Cecil began a 45-year career with the Social Security Administration (SSA) serving initially as a Field Claims Re.  While on assignment in meridian, Mississippi, he met Miss Lorena Camp of Chunky, Mississippi and they were married on December 9, 1951.  As an exemplary civil servant, Cecil was readily promoted within the SSA and settled in Gainesville, Georgia where he held the position of Branch manager for over 20 years.  He was a vital part of the Gainesville community, with lifelong involvement as a member of the Gainesville Lions Club, Executive Director of the Community Chest (now the United Way), and was designated as a Life Deacon at First Baptist Church of Gainesville.  Cecil was very active, even chopping and splitting his own firewood until age 88, and was an avid Bridge player with the Lanierland Duplicate Bridge Club every week until he broke his hip in 2005 and could no longer drive.  He loved the mountains of North Georgia, where he thrilled his sons and nephews with rides in his 4WD Scout on hunting and fishing trips in the woods behind his childhood home.  Cecil will be remembered d by his family as a man of few words but of great wisdom, with a gentle spirit, a strong faith in God, and a mischievous sense of humor.

Ceils is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Lorena, of Gainesville; two sons and their spouses, Glen Camp Collins and wife, Celine, of Blairsville, and Any Thomas Collins and wife, Luanne, of Burleson, TX; seven grandchildren, two step grandchildren, two great grandchildren; one brother, Robert Neal Collins of Blairsville; and three sisters, hazel Clary of Blairsville, Catherine Fortenberry of Ault, CO, and Betty Lawrence of Destin, FL.  He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Collins.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m., Monday, April 24th at First Baptist Church of Gainesville with Dr. Bill Coates, Dr. John Lee Taylor, and Bruce Fields officiating.  Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. at the Choestoe Baptist Church in Blairsville, GA where a 30-minute viewing for friends and family members, were held at 1 p.m.  Memorials made be made to First Baptist Church of Gainesville’s Ministry of Caring, 751 Green St. Gainesville, GA 30501.
