Mr. Jack B. Tanner, age 78, of Snellville, GA, formerly of Union County died Saturday, April 26, 2003.

Mr. Tanner was born in Blairsville, GA.  Her served in WWII Headquarters Battery 275th Armored Field Battalion and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.  He was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Snellville.  Mr. Tanner will be remembered as a devoted servant of Gad, faithful husband, loving father and fun granddaddy.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joyce; daughters and son-in-laws, Jackie and Ronnie Zastrow of Stone Mountain, Angie and Alan Young of Orlando, FL; sons and daughter-in-law, Kenny Tanner of Columbia, TN, Kevin and Jody Tanner of Loganville; 5 grandchildren, Jeremiah, Stefanie and husband Ryan, Brandon, Apryll and Carmen; sister, Reba Newsome of panama City, FL; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Wages Snellville Chapel with Dr. James Merritt and Dr. James Lee officiating.  Interment in Eternal Hills Memory Gardens.  Tom M. Wages Funeral Service, Inc. Snellville Chapel.

mr. william earl (bill) srader

 

Mr. William Earl (better known as (Bill) Srader, age 70 of Verbena way, Blairsville passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2003 in the Blue Ridge Health Care Center following an extended illness.

Mr. Srader was born on October 11, 19932 in Fairview, OK, the son of the late Ernest Srader and the late Rachel Humphrey Srader.  He was a veteran of the US Marines of the Korean War.  Mr. Srader was a member of the Christian Church in Cleo Springs, OK.  He is preceded in death by an infant sister and a step father.

Surviving Mr. Srader are one son, Scott Srader of pompano, FL; one daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Douglas Wynn of Blairsville; one brother, Jack Srader of Longmont, Co; four sisters, Erna Osborn of Mooreland, OK, Laverda Nichel of Cleo Springs, OJK, Sharon York of Roseland, Fl, Bonnie Driskell of Humble, TX; three grandchildren, Jamie Wynn, Jonathon Wynn and Kelly Wynn; one great grandchild, Alexis Rogers, many other relatives, friends and neighbors also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a alter date and will be announced.

mr. oliver jackson payne

 

Mr. Oliver Jackson Payne, age 83, of Galloway Rd., Blue Ridge, GA passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2003, in the Fannin Regional Hospital.

He was a native of Union County, GA, son of the late Elisha and Dollie Meers Payne.  He had loved most of his life in Fannin County, was a retired employee of the Tennessee Copper Company where he worked as a repairman for over 30 years. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Union County, and was a member of the Mineral Bluff Lodge #483 F&AM.  He was preceded in death by a son, Ervin Jackson Payne, and a sister, Inabel Rogers.

He is survived by his wife, Rose Lee Sisson Payne of the home; three sons, James and Ray D. Payne both of Blue Ridge and Wade Payne of Copperhill, NT; four daughters, Ruby Queen and Brenda Queen both of Epworth, GA, Linda Davenport and Shirley Payne both of Blue Ridge; two brothers, Clyde Payne of Blairsville and Junior Payne of Chatsworth; two sisters, Irene Allen of Alpharetta, GA, and Erma Patton of Copperhill, TN; 13 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, April 24, 2003 at 3 p.m. from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Kenny Housley and Rev. Roy Clore officiating.  Music was by Jessie and Lena Hill.  The following grandsons served as pallbearers: Gary and Jeffery Queen, Aaron Payne, Charles Johnson, Robert Dailey and Tommy Ledford.  Interment followed in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Union County, with Masonic services by Mineral Bluff Lodge #483 F&AM.

mrs. margie ann townsend butt

 

Mrs. Margie Ann Townsend Butt, age 64 of Butts Drive, Blairsville passed away on Monday, April 21, 2003 in Jefferson, GA following a brief illness.

Mrs. Butt was born on May 25, 1938 in Union County, the daughter of the late James Andrew Townsend and the late Elizabeth Stephens Townsend.  Mrs. Butt was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and had been employed at Union General Hospital for several years as an Admissions and Insurance Clerk.  She was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifford, Bill and Odell Townsend.  Mrs. Butt was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blairsville.

Surviving Mrs. Butt are her husband of fifty years, Max Butt of Blairsville; one daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Scott Lee of Jefferson, GA; four sisters and two brother-in-laws, Sarah Roberts of Suwannee, GA, Betty and Max Orr of Gainesville, GA, Jeanette and Roger Vest of Blairsville, GA, Grapelle Thompson of Winder, GA; two brothers and sister-in-laws, Tom and Joanne Townsend of Cumming, GA, Robert and Brenda Townsend of Jonesboro, GA; two granddaughters, Nikki and Katie Lee of Jefferson, GA many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 24, 2003 at 3 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. B.A. Buchanan and Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating.  Special music was presented by the Faith Singers.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Kenneth Casper, Kevin Nelson, Steve Orr, Tim Cable, Gerald Townsend and Todd Townsend.  Interment followed in the Union Memory Gardens Cemetery.

mr. elbert bristol holloway

 

Mr. Elbert Bristol Holloway, age 94 of Murphy Drive, Blairsville passed away on Saturday, April 26, 2003 in the Union General Hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Holloway was born on may 1, 1908 in Cherokee, NC, the son of the late Joe Holloway and the late Amanda Trantham Holloway.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County.  Mr. Holloway was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Holloway are his loving wife Vanita Carroll Holloway of Blairsville; one daughter, Gertrude Nacy Wilbanks of Ellijay; five sons, and three daughter-in-laws, Joe D. Holloway of Blairsville, Harvey and Carolyn Holloway of Milner, GA, Hugh and Juanita Holloway of Griffin, Benny Joe and Sharon Holloway of Marietta; two brothers and sister-in-laws, Claude and Willamae Holloway of Marble, NC, Wayne and Lorene Holloway of Robbinsville, NC; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Hubert Legg officiating.  Special music was presented by The Happy Pilgrims.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ralph Carroll, Eddie Holloway, Dale Tanner, Junior Carroll, Sonny Holloway, and Arnold Patterson.  Interment followed in the Dillard Chapel Cemetery.

Mrs. Kathryn Lanelle Whitt Johnson, age 53 of Thompson Lane, Blairsville passed way on Friday, April 25, 2003 in the Kendrid Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness.

Mrs. Johnson was born on August 22, 1949 in Barnesville, GA, the daughter of the late Clarence Whitt and Mildred Smith Whitt.  Mrs. Johnson was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mrs. Johnson are her loving husband of thirty two years, Edgar Johnson, Sr.; two sons and daughter-in-laws, John and Lisa Harden of Blairsville, Blairsville, Dale and Melissa Johnson of Blairsville; three daughters and two son-in-laws, Anita and Danny Cambell of Madison, GA, Angela Johnson of Mableton, Ann and Paul Cook of Murphy; mother, Mildred Pollard of Barnesville; two brothers, James Whitt of Thomaston, GA, David Whitt of Barnesville; five sisters, Lee Owenby of Jackson, GA, Alice Daniels of Barnesville, Jackie Odom of Blairsville, Nancy Townsend of Blairsville, Becky Gunter of Barnesville; twelve grandchildren, five great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Monday, April 28, 2003 at 11 a.m. from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ray Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by Wofford and Sarah Kelley.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Steven harden, Wesley Hetzell, Clifford Foster, Wayne Thompson, Jamie Burnette and Cary Rich.  Interment followed in the Owltown Church of God Cemetery.

william max stephens

 

Mr. William Max Stephens, age 75, of Blairsville, GA passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2003 in the Union General Hospital.  He was a native of Union County, son of the late Charles H. and nanny Lou Conley Stephens.  He was a member of the House of Prayer, and was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.

He is survived by a son, Jodi Stephens and his fiancée Maria of Pendergrass, GA; two brothers, Conley and Donald Stephens both of Dalton, GA; one sister, Pauline Henry of Dalton; 3 grandchildren, Jessica Lee of Iceland, Kristina Ashley of Pendergrass, and Jaclyn Marie of Lawrenceville; and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 25, 2003, at 2:00 pm from the Akins Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Helton officiating.  Interment followed in the Antioch Church Cemetery with military honors by the North Georgia Honor Guard.  Akins Funeral Home of Blue Ridge in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Larry Ward Law, Jr. age 38 of the Blue Ridge Hwy Blairsville passed away on Tuesday, April 22, 2003 at his home following a sudden illness.

He had worked as a heavy equipment operator.  Mr. Law was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Law are his loving wife, Deborah Lynn Hampton Law of Blairsville; two sons, Larry Ward (Trey) Law, III, of Blairsville, Marcus Voyles of Canton, GA; two daughters, Sandra Lee Law of Blairsville, Nikki Law of Canton; parents, Bobby and Sandra Tritt of Canton; brothers, Donnie Law of Marietta, Freddy Pierce of Canton; sister, Shancy Lamanac of Canton; grandparents, Sarah Law of Marietta, D.J. and Pauline Lee of Powder Springs, Jack Andlois Upchurch of Morrow; great grandfather, Eston Peppers of Buford, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Friday, April 25, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Flannigan Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Trammel Rhoades officiating.  Interment followed in the Shoal Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Buford.

Mrs. Vina P. Fields, age 101 of Bartow, FL passed away on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at New Horizon Share Home in Winter Haven, FL.

Mrs. Fields was born December 8, 1901 in Blairsville, GA.  He was a life long resident of Bartow, FL.  She was retired from Polk County Juvenile Home.  She was a Charter member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Bartow and recently attended First Baptist Church in Bartow.  Mrs. Fields was preceded in death by her husband, Dewey C. Fields and a son, Charles G. Fields.

Surviving Mrs. Fields are one daughter, Jeannette F. Smith of Bartow, FL; four granddaughters, Virginia L. Albritton of Lakeland, FL, Teri L. Markley of Winter Haven, FL, Susan DeNeve of Bartow, FL, Lynda MacPherson of Wesley Chapel, FL; four grandsons, Harry L. Orwig of Bartow, FL, Mike Garnto of Winter Haven, FL, Bill Garnto of Winter Haven, FL, Lex C. Thompson of Tallahassee, FL; nine great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at 2 p.m. from the Whidden-McLean Funeral Home in Bartow, FL with Rev. Frank H. Brooks officiating.  Interment followed in the Wildwood Cemetery.  Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Bartow-Building Fund, 410 East Church Street, Bartow, FL 33830 or Asbury Methodist Church-Building Fund, 1650 South Jackson Ave., Bartow, FL 33830.

luther wesley sharp

 

Luther Wesley Sharp, 77, of Blairsville, Georgia, died April 26, 2003.  Born in Hall County, Georgia, he resided in Blairsville for the past several years.  A Navy Veteran, a graduate of the University of Georgia and a former executive with Western Electric Company, his greatest joy came from his role as an Elder with mountain Presbyterian Church of Blairsville and through his service to Presbytery.

Mr. Sharp is survived by his wife of 57 years, Sue; three children: Joseph W. Sharp of mountainside, New Jersey, Pamela Sharp Sullivan of Wilbur, Washington, and Jeffrey T. Sharp of Raleigh, North Carolina; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three sisters: Virginia Keen, Ethel Chalpan and Mabel Craig, all of Atlanta; and many nephews and nieces.

A graveside service will be held at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at 2:00 p.m.  A memorial service will be held at Mountain Presbyterian Church in Blairsville on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at 2:00 p.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Mountain Presbyterian Church Building Fund.
