mrs. mary grace jones abernathy

Mrs. Mary Grace Jones Abernathy of the Blue Ridge Hwy. Blairsville passed away on Monday, April 22, 2002 in the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Atlanta following an extended illness.  Mrs. Abernathy was born on November 16 in Union County, the daughter of the late Wiley Lloyd Jones and the late Elda Radie Nicholson Jones.  She was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and had retired from the Levi Straus Co.  She was a member of the retiree club of Levi Straus.  Mrs. Abernathy was a member of Confidence Methodist Church.

Surviving Mrs. Abernathy are three daughters and two son-in-laws, Phyllis and Dennis Puett of Marietta, Sammy Jean Shook of Blairsville, Jo and Dennis Blanchard of Marietta; six grandchildren, Robin and Cindy Puett, Amanda Henson, Tommy Shook, Shana Ingram and Ryan Robinson; three great grandchildren, Stephani Arrowood, Clarissa and Coty Henson; several nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 25, 2002 at 1 pm from the Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Billy Jones officiating.  Mr. Jack Parker gave the eulogy.  Special music was presented by the Caylor Family.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Junior, Jeff and James Arrant, Steven Henson, Robby Bandy, William Sisum, Tommy Shook, Marty Rhodes, Keith, Brandon and Darren Jones, Charles Ingram, Steve Bandy and Don Townsend.  Interment followed in the Jones Family Cemetery.

Mrs. dorothy m. gargan

Mrs. Dorothy M. Gargan, age 76, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Friday, April 19, 2002, in Blairsville following an extended illness.

Mrs. Gargan was a native of Scotland, and was born on Wednesday, February 24, 1926, a daughter of Alexander Whitelaw and Edith Gloth Whitelaw.  She had been living in Blairsville since 1988, moving here from Islamorada, Florida.  Mrs. Gargan was a short-stop for the NYC Women’s Softball Team.  She spent many years as a Girl Scout leader in Long Island, New York, while raising her family.  In 1968, she moved to the Florida Keys where she was a real estate broker and managed a title company.  Later on, she worked for the postal service until her retirement and move to the north Georgia area.

Surviving are her loving husband, John Gargan, Sr., of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Carol Ann and David Tanner, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; son and daughter-in-law John, Jr. and Jackie Gargan, of Islamorada; brother, Alex Whitelaw, of Humble, Texas; brother, Albert Whitelaw, of Bayshore, Long Island; four grandchildren; Rick and Kammie Gargan, of Key Largo, Florida; Kelly Jo Scott, Joseph Gargan, and Lori Beth Gargan, all of Islamorada; great grandchildren: Derick and Ciara Gargan; many friends and other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at 11 a.m., from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home of Blairsville, with Pastor James Brock officiating.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens Cemetery in Blairsville.
