mrs. ina mae rogers akins

 

Mrs. Ina Mae Roger Akins, age 89, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Thursday, April 28, 2005 in Union General Hospital in Blairsville.

Mrs. Akins was born Wednesday, September 29, 1915, in Union County, GA, a daughter of the late Edgar Rogers and Callie Brackett Rogers.  She was the wife of the late Hoke Akins and sister of the late Claude Rogers.  Mrs. Akins was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include daughter, Carolyn Holland, of Blairsville; granddaughter, Angie Holland, of Blairsville; sister, Catherine Nicholson, of Blairsville, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, April 30, 2005 at 2 p.m., from the Chapel of Cochran Funeral Home, with Rev. Charles Black officiating.  Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Robert Turner, Michael J. Akins, John Barrett, Michael S. Akins, and William Akins.  Burial was in Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.

bertha droze

 

Bertha Droze, age 97, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2005.

Bertha was born Tuesday, June 11, 1907 in Pickens County, SC to the late Samuel Jewell and the late Mame Smith Jewell.  She had lived in Summerville, SC before moving to Blairsville in 1986.

Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, Isaac Droze; daughter, Lila Miller; son, Clinton Droze; 3 grandchildren, 5 brothers and one sister.

Survivors include: sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Margaret Droze of Hanahan, SC, Sam and Betty Droze of Oceanside, CA and Robert and Martha Droze of Mission, TX; daughter-in-law, Kathryn Droze of Blairsville; 30 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 3, 2005 at 11 a.m. from Cochran Funeral Home with the Dr. Paul Pridgen officiating.  Music was provided by Roberta Clawson.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens.  Serving as pallbearers were: James Miller, Kenneth Miller, Earl Droze, Mark Droze, David Droze, Michael Droze and Mike Droze.

scottie lee keen

 

Scottie Lee Keen, age 11 of Pat Colwell Rd. Blairsville went home to be with Jesus on Monday April 25, 2005 from the Childrens Healthcare Center of Egleston Hospital in Atlanta following a brief illness.  Scottie was born on Feb. 21, 1994 in Union County, the son of Tonya Oneal and Clayton Breeden.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and was currently in the fifth grade at the Union County Elementary School.  His favorite hobbies were fishing and hunting, and had killed his first deer this past hunting season, he was also a Wilderness Scouts.  Scottie was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.

Surviving Scottie are his loving parents, Tonya and Clayton of Blairsville, one brother, Christopher Breeden of Blairsville, Grandparents, Cheryl Burns of Blairsville, Glenda and Jimmy Conner of Blairsville and Coleman Breeden of Blairsville, several Aunts, Uncles, Cousins and many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday April 28, 2005 at 2:00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Leon McDonald and Rev. Brent Chatham officiating.  Special music was presented by Spirit Led.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Jason Oneal, Chuck Breeden, Chris Dills, Jack Totherow, Corey Caylor and Cody Hicks.  Interment followed in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. grady verlin groves

 

Mr. Grady Verlin Groves, age 66, of Bowers Circle Blairsville, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2005 at his home following an extended illness.  Mr. Groves was born on Oct. 20, 1938 in Union County, the son of the late Verlin Grady Groves and the late Jessie Sampson Groves.  He was a native and lifelong resident of Union County and had been employed with the US Forestry service.  He was a Veteran of the US Army of the Korean war.  He was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Groves.  Mr. groves was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

Surviving Mr. Groves are his loving wife of forty three years, Daisy Bowers Groves of Blairsville; one daughter, Sherry Groves of Alaska; two sons and daughters-in-law, Leslie and Mona Groves of Blairsville, Perry and Melissa Groves of Blairsville; two sisters, Lorine Bryant of Blairsville, Mary Weaver of Seabring, FL; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Bill and Mona Groves of Ramona, Ca, Ray and Wilma Groves, Jay and Vivian Groves all of Blairsville, jack and Mary Groves of Monroe, GA, four grandchildren; John and Deacon groves, Adina Swanson and Kelley Brown; three great grandchildren, Jordan, Ashley and Stephen Swanson, many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Sunday, may 1, 2005 at 2 p.m. from the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Dwayne Patterson and Rev. Guy Wayne Shook officiating.  Special music was presented by Tammy Gilreath and the Pleasant Grove Church Choir.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Steve Carver, Lewis Kelley, Doug Hughes, Steve Thomas, Donald Jones, Syd Dyer, Anthony Bryant and David Harden.  The following gentlemen served as honorary pallbearers, Silas Maynard, Joey Swanson, Jeff Decker, J.B. King, Charles Hughes, Junior Bowers, Doug Gray, Michael Warren, Bud Akins, Ernest Rogers and Dr. Don Pruitt.  Interment followed in the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery.

mr. john harold harkins

 

Mr. John Harold Harkins, age 75, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Sunday, April 24, 2005 following an extended illness.  He was born to the late General P. and Maver (Nix) Harkins on October 29, 1929.  He was preceded in death by two grandsons, master Jacob McClure, in 1991 and Master Trevor McDowell, in 2000.  He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-eight years, Mrs. Sarah Margaret Harkins, of Blairsville, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Johnita and Carl Gene gay, of Jupiter, FL; Jenni and Charlie Gregory, of Blairsville, GA; Jana and Robby McClure, of Blairsville, GA; daughter, Jessica Harkins, of Blairsville, GA; son, Jay Harkins, of Blairsville, GA; brothers, Stanley Harkins, of Fort Walton Beach, FL; Larry Harkins, of Jacksonville, FL; Gerry Harkins, of McDonough, GA; sister, Margaret Patterson, of Warrenton, VA.  Eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.  Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 28, 2005 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of Banister Funeral Home with Rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. George Cline officiating.  Memorial services will be at a later date.  Banister Funeral Home of Hiawassee in charge of arrangements
