mrs. mazie asalee patterson payne

 

Mrs. Mazie Asalee Patterson Payne, age 72, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Monday, April 28, 2003 in Select Specialty Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mrs. Payne was born in Fannin County, Georgia on Tuesday, September 16, 1930, a daughter of the late Virgil Patterson and Fannie Cornwell Patterson.  Mrs. Payne was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of this area.  She was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, and had been preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Payne, in 1985.

Surviving are six sisters: Hazel Cordell, of Murphy, NV; Lassie Allen, of Scottsmore, FL; Mary Sue Green, of blue Ridge, GA; Ruth Dodson, of Conyers, GA; Louise Allen and Ruby McClure, both of Blue Ridge, GA brother, Avery Patterson, of blue Ridge; many nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives also survive.

          Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 30, 2003, at 2:00 pm, from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Earl Pickelsimer officiating.  Special music was presented by Charlie Farmer and Rena Watkins.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Danny Payne, Adam Payne, William McClure, John McClure, Jason McClure, and Wayne Thomas.  Interment was in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Blairsville.

mrs. desma ruby foster

 

Mrs. Desma Ruby Foster, age 82, of Blairsville, GA passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2003 in Select Specialty Hospital in Atlanta, GA.

Mrs. was born, in Union County, GA, December 15, 1920, a daughter of the late John and Lula (Taylor) Lee.  She was a homemaker and a former member of the Union Hospital Auxiliary, and member of New Union Baptist Church.  Mrs. Foster was preceded in death by hr husband, Lloyd Foster in 1997.

Survivors include: daughters and sons-in-law, Betty Jean and Herbert Smith of Blairsville, GA and Carolyn and Junior Bridges of Blairsville, GA;  son and daughter-in-law, Johnny and Laura Foster of Hiram, GA; sister Inez Carney of Douglasville, GA; grandchildren, Alan Bridges of Blairsville, GA, Christy Souther of Douglasville, GA and Gina Brown of Blairsville, GA; great grandchildren, Samantha Souther of Douglasville, GA and Brandon Brown of Blairsville, GA; many other friends and relatives also survive.

          Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 3, 2003 at New Union Baptist Church.  Rev. Larry Shope and Rev. Harrison Bradley officiating.  Music was provided by New Union Baptist Church Choir.  Pallbearers were Bobby Dillinger, Bobby Jackson, Bill Abernathy, Robby Brown, Bill Nichols, Gordon Payne, Jerry Kinney and Cecil Shope.  Honorary Pallbearers were Alan Bridges, Brandon Brown, Glenn Smith and Corey Souther.  Interment was in the church cemetery.

Mr. Charles Sanford Young

 

Mr. Charles Sanford Young, age 79, of Young Drive, Blairsville, formerly of Hamilton, OH, passed away on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mr. Young was born on May 13, 1923 in Union County, the son of the late George Henry Young and the late Dovie Lena Odom Young.  Mr. Young was a Union County Native and was a veteran of the US Army.  He had retired from General Motors with over thirty one years service.  He was a lifetime member of the VFW and also of the American Legion.  Mr. Young was a member of the Liberty Baptist Church.  

Surviving Mr. Young are his loving wife of seventeen years, Betty Jean Harkins Young of Blairsville; two sons: Charles Sanford Young, Jr. of Hamilton, OH and Tommy Hayes of Gainesville; three daughters: Judy Swisher of Chattanooga, TN, Karen Sue Semones of Hillsboro, TN, and Cheryl Ann Imhoff of TN; one brother, George W. (Junior) Young of Blairsville, GA; one sister, Orene L. Morrow of Marietta, GA; ten grandchildren, two great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends also survive.

          Funeral services were held on Saturday, may 3, 2003 at 2 :00 pm from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Brent Chatham and Rev. Horace Potts officiating.  Special music was presented by Ken and Elaine Young.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Ronnie and Eddie Morrow, Danny, Randolph, Kyle and Bucky Young and Devin Roberts.  Interment followed in the Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery with the North Georgia Honor Guard conducting military honors.

miss frances evelyn ballard

 

Miss Frances Evelyn Ballard, age 85, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Saturday, may 3, 2003 at home following an extended illness.  Miss Ballard was a native of Walker County, Georgia, and was the daughter of the late Millard and Lillian Hammond Ballard. She had been living in the Blairsville area since 183, moving from Hollywood, Florida.  Miss Ballard taught music in the Broward County, Florida school system for 35 years.  Most of her life she had been actively engaged in music ministries in both Georgia and Florida.  For many years, she had served at First Baptist Church of Blairsville as organist.

Surviving Miss Ballard is a very close friend, Mary Summerset, of Blairsville; two cousins, Barbara Cain and Beverly Churchill, both of New Orleans, Louisiana; many other friends also survive.

At the request of Miss Ballard, no services were held.

mr. james russell tison

 

Mr. James Russell Tison, age 85, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away Tuesday, April 29, 2003, in Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville, an extended illness.

Mr. Tison was born in Wilcox County, Georgia, on Sunday, November 11, 1917, a son of the late William Paton Tison and Emma Barry Tison.  He was a U.S. navy veteran of World war II.  Mr. Tison and his wife had lived in lake City, Florida before moving to Blairsville in 1986.  In lake City, he was a businessman for over 40 years.  He was a former mayor of lake City, and a former Columbia County Commissioner, Mr. Tison was a member of lake City Masonic Lodge #27, F & AM, and a 50+ year member of Morocco Temple, Shrine of Jacksonville, Florida.  At the time of his death, Mr. Tison was a member of Hiawassee United Methodist Church in Hiawassee, Georgia.  Mr. Tison had been preceded in death by a son, James R. Tison, Jr., in 1949, and a grandson, Russell Bryner, in 1992.

Surviving are his wife, Nadine Strickland Tison, of Blairsville; daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Renny Bryner, of Blairsville; two sisters: Kate McCray and Lucille Dix, both of lake City, Florida; grandchildren: Leslie and Gary Rybka, of Asheville, Ohio; Michelle and Michael Russell, of Nashville, Tennessee; Charles Bryner, of Atlanta, Georgia; great grandchildren: Lacy and LeAnne Copeland, of Ashville, Ohio; and Austin Russell, of Nashville, Tennessee; many nieces, nephews, and friends also survive.

          Funeral services were held Saturday, May 3, 2003, at 11:00 am, from the chapel of Cochran Funeral Home with Elder Herman Griffin officiating.  Special music was presented by Allison Mackey, Rod Sharp, and Bryan Miller.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Renny Bryner, Charles Bryner, Richard Wilson, Gary Rybka, Ed Turner, and Carlie Bryant.  Interment was in Union Memory Gardens.
