leila mae shope trull

 

Leila Mae Shope Trull, age 98, of Blairsville, GA, passed away on Thursday, April 26, 2007.  Born on August 26, 1908, in Candler, she was a daughter of the late Terrell and Jenny Shope.  She was preceded in death by her first husband Otis B. Trull, and her second husband Rev. William H. Pless.  She was a member of Blairsville First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Owen Trull and wife Faye, of Blairsville, GA; step-daughter, Rose Case of Arden; sister, Dorothy Cooper of Randleman, NC; brother, Wayne Shope of Charlotte, NC; two grandchildren, Mark Trull of Fayetteville, GA and Keith Trull of Blairsville, GA; and three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Anna, and Adam.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Patton Avenue Chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Reverend G. W. Jameson and Mark Trull officiating.  Burial followed at Snow Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery.  Serving as pallbearers were Chuck Harris, Bill Pressley, Von McFarland, Bruce Trull, Kenneth Cathey, and Neil Cathey.  Her family received friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

gertrude grace mckeown woodruff

 

Mrs. Gertrude Grace McKeown Woodruff, age 86, of Jordan lane, Blairsville formerly of palm Harbor, FL, passed away on Sunday, April 29, 2007 in the Union General Hospital following an extended illness.  Mrs. Woodruff was born on January 31, 1921 in Pat-terson, NJ, the daughter of the late Samuel D. McKeown and the late Esther D. Wells McKeown.  She lived most of her life in Schenectady, NY.  She was a former IBM employee.  Her favorite hobbies were cooking, sewing and just being with her family.  She was preceded in death by a brother, John McKeown; two sisters, Mildred McKeown and Ruth Piel.  Mrs. Woodruff was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving Mrs. Woodruff are one brother and sister-in-law, James and Colette McKeown of Blairsville; one sister and brother-in-law, Florence and John Dunne of Seminole, FL; several nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends also survive.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to the Ameri-can Cancer Society in Mrs. Woodruff’s memory.

hazel collins clary

 

Mrs. Hazel Collins Clary, age 91, of Blairsville, GA, died on Friday, May 4, 2007 at Union County Nursing Home in Blairsville.  Hazel was born Tuesday, July 27, 1915 in Union County, Georgia, to the late Bob and Viola Collins, one of 6 children.  She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Cecil, Jim, and R. Neal Collins.  Hazel attended Choestoe Elementary School, Young Harris Academy and graduated from Young Harris College in 1934.  She graduated from Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia.  She married Ronald W. Clary in December 1936.  Hazel taught school for several years, then in 1946, she and her husband started a mercantile business known as “Clary’s”.  Hazel lived in Gainesville, Georgia, for almost 50 years before returning to Blairsville in 2003.  She was a member of Choestoe Baptist Church.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 1990.

Survivors include: son & daughter-in-law, Ron and Irene Clary of Gainesville; daughter & son-in-law, Joyce and Fred Woodward of Blairsville; sister, Catherine Fortenberry of Ault, Colorado; sister & brother-in-law, Betty and Jack Lawrence of Destin, Florida’ grandchildren, Ron Woodward of Buford, Georgia; Lynne Hampton of Fletcher, North Carolina; Susan and John Sutton of Blairsville; Beth Sales of Pisgah Forest, North Carolina; step-grandchildren, Lindsey and Baker Davenport of Gainesville; great grandchildren, Alysa Price of Blairsville; Logan, Ansley and Taylor Sales of Pisgah Forest; several nieces and nephews, and many friends also survive.

Funeral services were held Sunday, May 6, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the Choestoe Baptist Church with Rev. Ken Zollinger and Rev. Dick Stillwell officiating.  Music was provided by Michelle Collins.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Jimmy Hunter, Andy Collins, Bobby Collins, Bill Lawrence, Joe Lawrence and Joe Collins.  Interment followed in Choestoe Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family received friends at the funeral home from 7-9 Saturday, May 5.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Choestoe Baptist Church, 4455 Choestoe Church Road, Blairsville, Georgia 30512 or to Young Harris College, 1 College Street, Young Harris, Georgia 30582.

bill b. nall

 

Bill B. Nall, age 80, of Blairsville, GA, was a Western Kentuckian, although he was born in Hamilton, OH while his father was drilling a large bore city well.

He attended schools in several states before entering high school in Pink Bluff, AK.  He credited that outstanding school for having courses in Physics and Chemistry that made it possible, at age 17, to qualify for Navy Electronics Training.  He became an Avi-ation Electronics Tech after eleven months of schooling and flew voluntarily as a PBY crewman while at the Annapolis Air Base.

After service in the Navy Air Corps, he received an Engineering Degree from the University of Kentucky.  He was accepted in Tau Beta Pi (Engineering O, Pi Tau Siga 9 mechanical Engineering), and Sigma (Physics) Honorary Fraternities and graduated with high Distinction.

Almost thirty years later he received a Masters Degree from the University of Georgia, after completing Georgia Tech and Georgia Courses.  He worked thirty-nine years for Penn-Dixie and Medusa Com-panies that manufactured Portland Cement.  He had Engineering and Management positions that included eighteen ears as Plant Manager at Clinchfield, GA.  While in Perry, GA, he was third President of the Perry Chamber of Com-merce and a member of the Perry Methodist Church and later the Charlevoix, Michigan Methodist Church.  He was active in and a Commander of American Legion Post 24 and transferred to Post 163 in Melbourne, FL in 2001.

He was a 56 years member of American Legion.  He was an active member and president of the Perry Kiwanis Club, Charlevoix, MI, Lakeland and Melbourne, FL Kiwanis Clubs for over 40 years.  He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engi-neers for over 50 years and was registered as a Professional Engineer in Ohio and Michigan.

After retirement from the Cement Industry, he joined with Doug, Dour Jr. and Scott Way of of Way Transportation in forming Northern Michigan Dust Control and helped establish reputations for en-vironmentally sound and effective work in controlling dust from unpaved roads and other traffic areas.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Ida; uncle, Jason Nall of Wingo, KY; brother-in-law, James Register of Ocala, FL; niece and nephew; cousins; step-children; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at a later date and will be announced.  In lieu of flowers, if you wish, the family requests that memorials may be made to Kiwanis Clubs International in Mr. Nall’s memory.

richard lee hampton

 

Mr. Richard Lee Hampton, age 62, of Mt. Pleasant Church Rd., Blairsville, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 in the N. East Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.  Mr. Hampton was born on March 23, 1945 in Cherokee Co., NC, the son of Odith Warren and the late Kenneth Hampton.  He was a lifelong resident of Union County.  He was the owner and operator of Hampton Well Drilling for more than forty years and along with his son Randy, were the first in the area to do hydro-fracting of wells, which they started in 1985.  Richard was very active in the community.  His favorite past times were hunting and fishing.  He was preceded in death by a grandson, Scotty Hampton and two brothers, Billy and Walter Hampton.  Mr. Hampton was of the Baptist faith.

Surviving Mr. Hampton are his loving wife of thirty years, Jo Hannah Hampton of Blairsville; mother, Odith Ballew; one son, randy Hampton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debra Hampton, Rehnee and Cliff Herr, Teresa and Joey Colwell, all of Blairsville; three step-daughters and sons-in-law, Telida and Tommy Lovell of Blairsville, Tammy and Mark Robinson of Brewton, AL, Renee’ and Jeff Hanna of Flowery Branch, GA; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Boyd and Becky Hampton of  Conyers, Ken and Carol Hampton of LA, Cecil and Pearl Warren of Andrews, NC; one sister, Pauline Ernest of Douglasville; grandchildren, Brandy and Christopher Hampton, Larry (Trey) and Sandra Law, Jessica and Cliff Herr, Jr., Tyler Henderson, Julia Colwell, Jason, Adam and Todd Robinson, Zachary Lovell, Matt and Bethany Hannah; many other relatives and friends also survive.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with the rev. Stacy Dyer and Rev. Charles Abernathy officiating.  Special music was presented by Michael Kennedy and Mindy Combs.  The following gentlemen served as pallbearers, Rand Hampton, Chad Sisum, Keith Brewer, Tim Odom, Michael Kennedy, Tommy and Greg Hampton and Mike Dillard.  Serving as honorary pallbearers were, Jason, Adam and Todd Robinson, Christopher Hampton, Zachary Lovell, Trey Law, Tyler Henderson, Matt Hanna, Cliff Herr, Jr. and Rodney Hampton.  Interment followed in the Jones Cemetery.

mary elizabeth pierce

 

Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Pierce, age 72, of Suches, GA, died Sunday, April 29, 2007 at her resident following a short illness.  Mrs. Pierce lived most of her life in Suches.  She was a homemaker and was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches.  She was the daughter of the late John Conley Burnett, Sr. and Mattie Virginia Jarrard Burnett.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Pierce, Jr.

Mrs. Pierce is survived by sons and daughter-in-law, Charles Pierce of Suches, GA and Mike and Jeanett Pierce of Suches, GA; brothers, Junior Burnett and Arthur Burnett, both of Suches; grandchildren, Jessica Pierce, Chris Pierce; a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 3, 2007 at the Zion Baptist Church in Suches with Rev. Russell Lyle officiating.  Interment followed in the church cemetery.  The family received friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 2, 207 from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
