Annie
Mae McConnell Morgan, age 70, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Friday, May
7, 2010 at Murphy Medical Center Nursing Home in Murphy, NC, after a
short
illness.
She was
born Thursday, March 12, 1931, in Union County, GA,
and lived there most of her life. She
was the daughter of Burley Clifford and Lillie Beaver McConnell, and
was a
member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She
was an avid quilter, making and selling many beautiful quilts. She
loved flower
and vegetable gardening, canning hundreds of jars of fresh produce
every
year. She is preceded in death by her
parents; sister & brother-in-law, Paralee & Dock Nation;
brother,
Porter McConnell; and brother-in-law, Edward Morrison.
Surviving
are her husband of 62 years, William Homer Morgan; daughter &
son-in-law,
Linda & Gary Wilson of Greenville, NC; son & daughter-in-law,
Tom &
Sheila Morgan of Hilton Head, SC; sister & brother-in-law, Leona
&
Clayton Dowell of Brevard, NC; brother & sister-in-law, Clifford
“Shorty”
& Thelma Twiggs McConnell of Acworth, Gap; sister, Mary Nell
Morrison of
Marietta, GA, granddaughter, Julie Wilson Johnson of Garner, NC;
granddaughter,
Lori Wilson Herring of Newton Grove, NC; grandson, Shane Morgan of
Zanesville,
OH; grandson, Erik Morgan of Hilton Head, SC; great grandchildren: Gage
Herring,
Brayden herring, Sammy Johnson, Donovan James Morgan and Aiden Morgan;
several
nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral
services were held Monday, May 10, 2010 at 11 AM at the Cochran Funeral
Home
Chapel with Rev. Grady Ray officiating.
Serving as pallbearers were the following gentlemen: Joe
Bridges, Nicky
Cornette, Charles Hunter, Doug Mason, Neil McConnell and Chris Nation. Honorary pallbearers included the following
gentlemen: David Cook, Cas Gunter, Joe Janicki and George Parker.
The family received
friends Sunday, May 9, 2010 from 6-9 PM at the Cochran Funeral Home in
Blairsville.

James
W. “Jim” Dobson, Jr., 85, of Blairsville, GA, died May 5, 2010 at Union
General
Hospital, Blairsville. Son of the late
James Walter and Tennie Gillespie Dobson, he was a native of Central,
SC and
lived most of his life in Blairsville, GA.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran of World War II and a member and
deacon of
First Baptist Church of Blairsville. He
received his B.S. degree at Clemson University and Master’s degree at
the
University of Georgia and was associate professor emeritus of agronomy
and
former superintendent of the University of Georgia’s Georgia Mountain
Experiment Station (know knows as the Georgia Mountain Research and
Education
Center), Blairsville. He retired from
the Station in 1991 after 38 years of service.
Surviving
are a brother, George “Bip” Dobson of Easley, SC, five nieces, four
nephews and
many great and great-great nieces and nephews, all of whom
affectionately knew
him as “Uncle Top”. In addition to his
parents, he was predeceased by sisters Mary Cole, Lois Cantrell, and Jo
Sherman; and brothers Robert “Doc” Dobson, Tom Dobson, and Wess Dobson.
He devoted
his life to family and public service.
Throughout his professional career and in retirement he
tirelessly
volunteered and was often recognized for his service to numerous
church, civic,
education, historical, and veterans affiliations.
Funeral
services were held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 8 at the Chapel of
Duckett-Robinson
Funeral Home in Central, with burial to follow at Memory Gardens.
The family received
friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
Saturday.
A memorial
service will be held at Blairsville, GA at a later date.
In lieu of
flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Blairsville,

Ridge St., Blairsville, GA 30512.

Mrs.
Hazel Louis Holbrooks, age 78, of Holbrooks Road, Blairsville, passed
away on
Saturday, May 1, 2010 in the Union General Hospital following an
extended illness. Mrs. Holbrooks was born
on Oct. 20, 1931 in
Union County, the daughter of the late Ben Thomas and the late Maude
Brown
Thomas. Hazel loved to work with her
flowers, gardening and canning. She was
a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband,
Arvie Holbrooks, a son, Jerry Holbrooks, a daughter, Joan Elaine
Holbrooks, a
granddaughter, Jennifer Lynn Holbrooks and a son-in-law, Jerry R.
Seabolt. Mrs. Holbrooks was of the Baptist
faith.
Surviving
Mrs. Holbrooks are seven children, Frankie Mae Seabolt of Blairsville,
Mark and
Annie Holbrooks of Blairsville, Lynn and Pam Holbrooks of Blairsville,
Janet
and Danny Stephens of Blairsville, Susie King of Blairsville, Johnny
and Sarah
Holbrooks of Blairsville, Tommy and Tracy Holbrooks of Blarisville
(sic), two
sisters, Maggie Nelson of Blairsville and Lula Payne of Blairsville,
twenty-two
grandchildren, Roger, Steven, Evelyn, Tina, Arlis, Wesley, Amanda,
Mendy,
Nathan, Joni, Margaret, Amy, Becky, Carrie, Alicia, Brittany, Robin,
Curtis,
Mike, Kayla, Josh and Hannah, eighteen great-grandchildren, many other
children
and grandchildren not born of blood but of love, as well as many other
relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held on Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 2 p.m. from the Mountain
View
Chapel with the Rev. Waymon Lovell, Rev. Jimmy Tanner and Rev. Kevin
(Keith)
Collins. The following gentlemen served
as pallbearers, Wesley, Nathan and Josh Holbrooks, Curtis Stephens,
Mike King,
Steve, Arlis and Roger Seabolt. All
grandsons-in-law served as honorary pallbearers. Special
music was presented by New Liberty
Baptist Church and Brittany Holbrooks. Interment
followed in the Harmony Grove Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family met with friends at the funeral
home on Monday evening after 6 p.m.

Jurl
Russell Gilreath, age 65, of Blairsville, GA, passed away Wednesday,
May 5,
2010 in Northside Hospital in Atlanta.
Mr. Gilreath was born in Union County, GA, on Tuesday, August 8,
1944, a
son of the late Russell Gilreath and the late Bessie Payne Gilreath. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and had
been a lifelong resident of this area.
Mr. Gilreath had been employed by the U.S. Forestry Service,
assigned to
Fire Management. He was a member of
Corinth Baptist Church in Suches.
Preceding him in death besides his parents, was a son, Mike
Gilreath.
Surviving
family members are daughter and son-in-law, Angela
Marie and Jeff Dodd, of Calhoun, GA; special friend, Marie Simmons, of
Blairsville; grandson, Avery Dodd. Many
other relatives and friends also survive.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, May 8, 2020 at 11 a.m., in the Chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home, with Rev. Ronnie McCormick and Rev. Waymon Lovell
officiating.
Special music was presented by Larry Nichols, Roy and Doris Hefner. The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Tim Helton, Bill Coker, Roy Hefner, Nick Fortenberry, Greg
Gilreath, and Benny Brookshire. The
following gentlemen served as honorary escort to the family: Jerome
Garrett,
Christopher Parks, James Conrad Gilreath, and Eugene Gilreath. North Georgia Honor Guard presented military
graveside honors at the burial at Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery in
Suches.
Visitation
was on Friday, May 7, 2010, after 6 p.m.; the family met with friends
from 6
until 9 p.m. on Friday.
