Mr.
William Ray “Bill” Hughes, age 46, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed
away,
Tuesday, May 4, 1999 in Marietta, Georgia.
Mr. Hughes
was born in Wayne County, Michigan, on Monday, July 7, 1952. He was a veteran
of
the U.S. Marines. MR> Hughes was a
truck driver for Timely Transportation.
He had lived in Blairsville most of his life, and was a member
of
Ebenezer Baptist Church. Preceding him
in death was his father, J.C. Hughes in 1983, and his brother, Roger
Hughes, in
1988.
Survivors
include his mother, Mary Marcie Hughes, of Blairsville; daughters,
Kelley and
Melinda Hughes, both of Marietta; sister, Gwen Hughes; and brother,
Bobby
Hughes, both of Blairsville; niece, Bridgette and nephews, Craig Hughes
and
Robbie Dockery.
Funeral
services were held Saturday, May 8, 1999 at 11 a.m. from the chapel of
Cochran
Funeral Home in Blairsville, with Rev. Joe Maxwell, Rev. Loys waters,
and Rev.
Leon Henderson officiating. Special
music was presented by Rachel Barnes, and Brenda Hemphill.
The following gentlemen served as
pallbearers: Robert Dockery, Eddie Terry, Tom Wooten, R.B. Brown, and
employees
of Timely Transportation. Serving as
honorary escort to the family were: Larry Prather, Larry Henderson,
Danny
Hemphill, Clyde McGaha, Chuck Gillispie, and David Hemphill. Interment was in Ebenezer Baptist Church
Cemetery.

Rev.
Claud J. Davenport, age 78, of Blairsville, Georgia, passed away
Friday, may 7, 1999 in Union County,
Georgia. Rev. Davenport was born in Union
County on
Sunday, July 4, 1920, a son of the late Bill Davenport and Clara Teague
Davenport. He was retired from Cities
Service Company in August of 1976. Rev.
Davenport was a member of Youngstown Baptist Church, and has served as
a
minister in this area for the past 52 years.
He was also a member of Young Cane Lodge 597.
Rev. Davenport was preceded in death by a
son, Glenn Davenport.
Survivors
include his wife, Willaree, of the home; daughters and son in law:
Mildred and
Joe Cook of Murphy; Melba and Tommy Jackson; Margie and Milton
Alexander; Mazie
and Bruce Gray; Martha and Johnny Brackett, all of Blairsville;
daughter in
law, Debbie Davenport, of Hoschton, Georgia; son and daughter in law,
Gary and
Paula Davenport, of Blairsville; step children and their spouses: Diane
and
Chub Patterson, of Blue Ridge; Eddie Queen of Blairsville; Brenda
Stanley of
Ellijay, GA; and Geary and Ginger queen of Spartanburg; brothers: Rev.
Vernon
Davenport, of Blairsville; Dewey Davenport, of Montgomery, AL; and
sister,
hazel Thomas, of Blairsville; 28 grandchildren, and 18 great
grandchildren also
survive.
Funeral
services were held Sunday, may 9, 1999 at 2 p.m. from Youngstown
Baptist Church
with Rev. Hubert Legg and Rev. Leon Henderson officiating.
Special
music was presented by Lewis Smith, Ned Wilcoxin,
and Hubert and Betty Legg. The following
gentlemen served as pallbearers: Keith Brewer, T.J. Montieth, Jeremy
Henderson,
Johnny Carroll, Wayne Roberts, and Steve Worley. The
following gentlemen served as honorary
escort to the family: Pat Hughes, Herbert Everett, Alan Worley, Lee
Bridge,
Quinton Holbrooks, Dr. Don Pruitt, Frank Hunter, Artis Leavel, Jackie
Adams,
Howard Brys, Fatie Chapman, and Shannon Carroll. Interment
was in Union Memory Gardens
Cemetery, with Masonic Graveside Rites, presented by members of Young
Cane
Lodge.

Mrs. Inez
Helton, age 77, of Blue Ridge, Georgia, formerly of Blairsville,
Georgia,
passed away Monday, May 3, 1999 in Fannin Regional Hospital in Blue
Ridge.
Mrs. Helton
was born in Union County, Georgia, on Saturday, December 17, 1921, a
daughter
of the late Johnny Shepherd and Ellen Tanner Shepherd.
She as a homemaker and was the widow of the
late Newman Helton., Mrs. Helton had
lived most of her life in Union County, and was a member of Mt.
Pleasant
Baptist Church.
Survivors
include her daughter, Lois Totherow, of Blairsville; sons, Roger Helton
of
Blairsville and Larry Helton, of Ellijay; sisters: Geneva Bryson, of
Blairsville and Willanell Nix, of Ellijay; 5 grandchildren, and 5 great
grandchildren also survive.
Funeral
services were held Thursday, May 6th, 1999 at 2 p.m. from Mt Pleasant
Baptist
Church, with Rev. Horace Potts and Rev. Joe Dan Wilkins officiating. Special music was presented by Hubert and
Betty Legg. The following gentlemen served as pallbearers: Donald Bell,
John
Kirkland, Paul Jones, Cline Nix, Billy Nix, and Johnny Shepherd. Interment was in Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church
Cemetery.
